The celebration of the birthday of King Fuad, is becoming an annual social event at the Egyptian Legation, where the Chargé dAffaires, Sesostris Sidarouss Bey, on Monday, again threw open the fine suites of rooms in the one-time Bischoffsheim residence in South Audley Street. This house has, of course, been altered and improved under the present regime, and now boasts suites of rooms, both on the ground floor and on the first floor, which are eminently suitable to entertaining on a large scale. A string band played in the hall at the foot of the stairs, and flowers were used in profusion everywhere. Naturally the Corps Diplomatique was well represented, but many English friends were also present. Among the latter were such well-known personalities as Sir Ian Malcolm—with his velvet-collared dress coat—Mrs. Wilfrid Ashley, wearing her favourite tone of bright green, the Earl of Meath, the Lord Mayor of London with the Lady Mayoress, Sir Edgar Bonham-Carter with Lady Bonham Carter in black satin, Mrs. Philip Snowden, in black lace, and Sir Harry and Lady Brittain, Charlotte Lady Inverclyde, wearing some fine diamonds with a black dress, was in a group who were admiring the new portrait of King Fuad, which was recently painted by Mr. Laszlo, and which shows the Egyptian monarch in uniform and wearing a red tarboosh. Mrs. Alec Tweedie, in yellow taffetas and a lace bertha, and Lady Cory, in bright turquoise blue and masses of diamonds, showed their preference for picturesque attire. Dame Alice Godman was one of those wearing diamonds in her hair; Lord Lawrence came with his wife, in a frock of white beaded tulle, another in a somewhat similarly beaded white dress being the Hon. Gladys Jessel, who came with her father, Lord Jessel. Lord and Lady Lamington, Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Bossom, Mrs. Claude Beddington, and Sir Clement and Lady Kinloch-Cooks were others among the English cóñtingent, wtitfé the diplomatists included the Brazilian and Italian Ambassadors, the Czechoslovak Minister, who was talking to Madame Dresselhuys, who wore a pale pink dress, the Rumanian Minister with his handsome wife in a dark blue chiffon frock, Comte and Com tease La Combo, and Nobilis Alberto Strana with his English wife.
