 Identify and create equal groups of up to five objects.

Are the groups equal? 

  1. Have four girls line up, one in front of the other. Have four boys match the line next to the first line.
  2. Ask the children to reach out and touch the hand of the child across from from him or her in the other line.
  3. The teacher will explain that the groups are equal; there are the same number of children in both lines.
  4. Bring groups with different numbers of children.
  5. Add new children one by one to a group that has fewer children.
  6. Have the children tell by clapping when the group is equal.
  7. Ask: Are the groups equal? How can you tell two groups are equal? How can you make two groups equal if they do not start out equal? (demonstrate)
  8. Distribute 5 red counters and 5 yellow counter to each child.
  9. Have the children make a group of two red counters.
  10. Then have them make an equal group of yellow.
  11. Ask: Are the groups equal? How can you tell two groups are equal? How can you make two groups equal if they do not start out equal?

  2. Have the children make a group of 3 red loops.
  3. Then have the make an equal group of green loops.
  4. Have the children match groups.
  5. Ask: Are the groups equal? (yes)
  6. Have the children add one more loop to the red group.
  7. Ask: Are the groups equal? (no) What do you need to do to make them equal? How many more loops do you need to make the groups equal?
  8. Have the children continue to add loops until they have equal groups of 5 loops.
