THE STORY GUIDE STARTS ON PAGE 8. SKIP TO THAT PAGE FOR THE STORY GUIDE!
Welcome to my story guide! While trying to figure out which event stories to read, I realized that story guides like this did not exist online– so I decided to make one. My name is Cameron LeBrun. I am the writer of the audio drama Who Killed Alaska? (link here) and for some reason I love Project Sekai.
Things to Know
Instead of doing ratings, why not poll people about which stories they like?
There are multiple reasons why this would not work with Project Sekai stories.
Besides: getting a representative sample of PJSK players would be nearly impossible! On the other hand, I do take a story’s popularity into account, using my own shitty sample size of 190. A popular story will always get at least 2 stars. Popular stories will also be marked as popular. You can ignore my takes and just read the popular stories if you like!
The Rating System
While these ratings express my own opinions and biases to an extraordinary extent, my hope was to establish a rating system that would actually benefit people with a wide variety of tastes and preferences.
This rating system is meant to determine how likely it is that you will love a particular story. I cannot possibly do so with complete accuracy but I’ve given my best effort. Here’s what each rating means.
The Meaning of ★☆☆☆ (1/4 stars)
I am trying to predict whether or not you will love this story. For 1-star stories, my prediction is no. You will not love it. However, if you are in the minority that enjoys a 1-star story, you still have great taste regardless!
A 1-star rating bears two meanings.
Firstly: You may like this story, but you are unlikely to love it. The story has not harnessed its potential and fails to fully appeal even to its intended audience. Your time is valuable; you do not have to read stories you will not love.
Secondly: This story’s adorers are not particularly enjoying the content of the story itself; they are enjoying the characters, or particular aspects of the setting or branding (e.g. theater kids might enjoy a story about musical theater, and people who like cooking might enjoy a story about cooking). Check the “recommended for” section of a 1-star story, and if you see yourself being described perfectly, you might still end up loving this story!
The Meaning of ★★☆☆ (2/4 stars)
I am trying to predict whether or not you will love this story. For a 2-star story, you might like it, depending on your tastes.
2-star stories are exceptionally good at catering to fans of particular characters, or they are otherwise very good at connecting to people who relate to certain topics.
For example: Fans of Toya would have been okay with any Toya-centric story, but the actual content of “Nocturne Interlude” will uniquely cater to their tastes; rather than feeding their love for Toya, the story itself is cause to love the character. Additionally, “Nocturne Interlude” also has a lot of fans who say they relate to the way Toya tries to appeal to his strict father while also trying to rebel from parental pressures.
In short, these stories do well with the characters or work with themes that could feel extremely relatable to certain fans.
Alternatively, some 2-star stories are broadly received as “pretty good but forgettable;” frequently liked, but rarely loved. I want to help you find stories you love, and help you avoid stories that are “just okay” to you. However, to be a 2-star and not a 1-star, a story surely has some redeeming qualities, so read through the “recommended for” and “not recommended for” sections to find out if this one’s for you!
The Meaning of ★★★☆ (3/4 stars)
I am trying to predict whether or not you will love this story. For a 3-star story, you might love it, but look at the “not recommended for” section, because there are certain people who will be turned off by certain aspects of the story.
A 3-star story is typically a well-written story with a reason to be read (a raison d'être). In short, it is a story written with intention and soul. You could have no interest in the Wonderlands Showtime characters but still love “Wonder Magical Showtime!”-- you could hate musical theater, and you could hate amusement parks, but you still might cry in the last two chapters.
Alternatively, the story might be technically well-structured in a manner that will keep most readers engaged regardless of the characters used or the subject matter being approached (as in “Ode to the Pure of Heart”).
3-star stories are broadly appealing regardless of the reader’s preferred genre or subject matter, but these stories could still turn people off due to niche aspects of the genre, subject matter, slow pacing, or sporadically bad writing.
Most of my favorite stories are 3-star stories, but they have qualities that will turn off certain readers outside of me. “Star of Your Own Story” is so, so beautifully written, but it also has a very mature, self-serious tone. Any readers looking to ship characters or get some laughs in will get bummed out or bored. “What Lies Beyond Guiding a Lost Child” is another favorite of mine, but it’s extremely pensive and some people are looking for a fast-paced, colorful story that makes them smile.
The Meaning of ★★★★ (4/4 stars)
I am trying to predict whether or not you will love this story. For 4-star stories, my prediction is yes. You will love it. However, if you are someone who doesn’t enjoy certain 4-star stories, that is okay! You still have great taste regardless!
4-star stories are fantastic and wonderful and appeal to most people. They have flaws, but their flaws will not spoil your ability to love the story overall. Certain factors give these stories very broad appeal regardless of the reader’s preferred genres, subject matter, or tone. However, no story can please everyone, so read through the “recommended for” and “not recommended for” sections.
It’s worth mentioning that your #1 favorite story is more likely to be 3 stars rather than 4. 4-star stories have few flaws, but flawed stories are often more effective storytelling for their respective niches.
If you find a 4-star story that you didn’t like, your input is extremely, extremely valuable to me. Please email me at optimist.cameron@gmail.com. Right away! I’ll be so excited to hear from you! ♡
What Does “Popular” Mean?
Certain stories are marked with this:
♚ This is a popular story.
I did not take a poll. I built up a friends list of 190 people who had liked at least one story regardless of what story that was; this became my data set. “Popular” means that 15% or more of my friends list has “liked” a story through the PJSK app itself. If 20% or more liked the story, the marker is changed:
♚♚ This is a very popular story.
This is a sub-par gauge of popularity because my friends list will partially be made up of people who would accept a friend request for #1 Bald and G@y, or, while I was trying to get a more representative sample, Super Normal, which seems an appropriate name for me, who is normal. (Also, I’ve mainly played in 2024-2025; people on my friends list are mostly active players who are reading recent stories.) All that being said, this has proved to be a great way to find the story preferences of a huge variety of PJSK players. I’ve tried traditional survey methods, but this has been way better.
Why do some popular stories have 2 stars?
As a rule, popular stories must receive at least 2 stars.
2-star stories are good at appealing to their niches and do well with the topics they discuss. “And Now, I Wear This Ribbon” is really, really good at appealing to Mizuki fans, and Mizuki is understandably the most popular PJSK character on the entire international server (my source: the biggest Discord fan server for PJSK currently shows 5k+ Mizuki fans in the role channel; she has absolutely and completely beat out all the other human characters by a long shot). That’s a really big niche. “And Now, I Wear This Ribbon” does a great job of appealing to that really big niche.
Stories that are read more are also more likely to receive likes. Stories can come out at a really convenient time, or they can include a popular character, or they can be Nightcord stories– Nightcord stories will always get a lot of readers. For all kinds of weird reasons, popularity isn’t always the strongest indicator that you’ll like a given story.
Why are Nightcord stories usually popular?
Because they’re really good.
Most people stop reading from a group when it gets a particularly bad story but Nightcord hasn’t had a lot of bad stories. Wonderlands Showtime stories are great but they had a rough start of it; they don’t get as many likes because they have fewer readers.
For fun, I made a chart of Project Sekai stories’ popularity by release date
This displays my dataset collected from 190 players. Surprisingly, it sort of looks like there are a couple of visible trends that made their way onto the chart, like the tendency for likes of a story to increase towards the end of December, when winter break occurs in American schools.
Finding Your Ships, Cute Sibling Interactions, & More!
Sometimes you want to see every iteration of two characters interacting. Maybe you ship them; maybe you just like seeing them run into each other. I always get extremely excited to see Mafuyu in the same room as Emu (who is terrified of her) or Akito (who mirrors her). I’ve catalogued all these special interactions for you.
To find every iteration of a particular character interaction, follow these two steps:
Try different combinations out and see which characters have interacted in these stories! Just to warn you: I didn’t include fleeting interactions; only notable, meaningful, charming, or otherwise special moments between characters.
Characters who share a unit together are of course included! They constantly have cute interactions, but it’s only the special or shippable interactions that are recorded.
