Abuse
General Overview
The purpose of this document is to formalize web hosting service and support expectations between the Office of Information Technology, hereinafter known as OIT, and web hosting customers, hereinafter known as Customer.
The following sections describe two different types of web hosting provided by OIT. For a description of all centrally managed web hosting options at PSU, please see PSU Web Space Options.
Web Hosting
Intended Uses
- Web Hosting is appropriate for websites that do not fit into any of the other PSU Web Space Options.
- Generally, Web Hosting will not be approved for
- Course Sites
- Personal Sites / Faculty CV Sites
Approvals
- Domain names in the pdx.edu namespace are subject to University Communications’ approval. Sites which are no longer eligible for their previous address will be provided a redirect for the period of one year, if desired.
- Organizations under the purview of SALP will require approval from the director of SALP.
- OIT reserves the right to deny web hosting service at its discretion.
Features
- Static Web Hosting
- Linux OS
- PHP (current supported version) by request
- MySQL supported, database provided upon request
- Minimum resource allocation
- 1 CPU Core
- 2 GB Memory
- Maximum resource allocation
- 2 CPU Cores
- 4 GB Memory
Restrictions
- Customers will not have console or direct access to the server itself.
- An active faculty or staff sponsor must be maintained at all times.
- Compromised or vulnerable web applications may be disabled without notification.
- No application assistance, web design or security consulting will be offered by OIT.
OIT Responsibilities
- System Patching
- Backups
- OIT reserves the right to perform automated security scans as threats or circumstances warrant.
Customer Responsibilities
- Application maintenance
- Keeping code up to date
- Keeping site content up to date.
- Timely reading of Web Hosting Google Group messages.
- Informing OIT of group membership changes (Only users with an active role in the university are eligible for hosting.)
Assumptions
- Customer will have sufficient knowledge and experience to manage their website with minimal support.
- Services not mentioned in this agreement are not provided without a revised agreement.
- Major upgrades may be treated as projects outside the scope of this agreement.
- Service will be provided in adherence to any related policies, processes and procedures.
Contact Information
- OIT and Customer will provide each other with updated contact information should there be any changes to personnel, email addresses, phone numbers, etc.
Communication and Change Management
- OIT changes that exceed minimal risk or impact levels and affect multiple customers will be communicated via the OIT Change Control process and via an email notification to the contact information provided by the Customer.
Service and Support
- Contact the OIT Helpdesk for support.
Maintenance/Downtime Window
- System maintenance, and the associated downtime, will normally be conducted sometime between 10pm and 6am Sunday - Thursday, or between 8 PM on Friday and 6 AM on Saturday. While every effort will be made to complete maintenance operations during these time frames there may be occasions where server maintenance needs to be performed outside of this window (i.e. emergency updates/patching).
Changes to this document
- OIT reserves the right to make changes to this document with 90 days advance notice. Notice will be provided to web hosting customers via the contact information on file.
- Any special provisions negotiated between OIT and Customer requires a separate written agreement.
Termination of web hosting service
- Either party may terminate with 90 days advance notice to the other party.
Personal Web Space
Intended Uses
- Personal Web Space is appropriate for
- Personal Web Pages
- Student Web Pages, such as for a presentation or assignment
- Faculty CVs: e.g. http://web.pdx.edu/~ott/cv/
- Course information or documentation: e.g. http://web.pdx.edu/~fountair/
- Research Projects: e.g. http://web.pdx.edu/~smasta/
- Content is available at web.pdx.edu/~username/
Approvals
- No approval or permission required.
Features
- Static Web Hosting

- Current PHP
- Default space allotment
Restrictions
- PHP is allowed, but certain functionality may be disabled for security reasons.
- No database connections are permitted.
- No application assistance, web design or security consulting will be offered.

Storage
All PSU employees and students have access to up to 1 Gigabyte of Unix File Space. This file space can be distributed over a number of different services including those described in this document (Personal Web Space, OIT Web Hosting) and files stored in Unix Odin and Unix Home Directory.
Abuse
In addition to the PSU Acceptable Use Policy, users of OIT Web Hosting service are prohibited from the following activities:
- Deliberately using resources such that it impacts other customers.
- Permitting code execution by, or providing user data to, an unauthorized party.
- Sending unsolicited email.
