GUEST ARTIST WORKSHOP SESSION DESCRIPTIONS

Richard Smith Workshops

CLASS SESSION 5: Thursday, 10:00 – 11:30 a.m.

Richard Smith Workshop – Gaining your Independence

We'll start with some "Travis" style thumb picking. For the greater majority of the time, no matter what style of music you play, your thumb is your bass player, and needs to be able to groove on its own. If you're having problems with that thumb independence, we'll go through the necessary steps you can take to make this happen. We'll also touch on some walking bass lines under chord structures or melodies and learn a tune or two to exercise on.

CLASS SESSION 10: Friday, 10:00 – 11:30 a.m.

Richard Smith Workshop – Beyond the CAGED System: Getting Out of your Comfort Zone

The CAGED system is a great way to navigate the fretboard, but sometimes we are literally trapped in it. Let's explore examples of getting outside the cage, but still using it as a landmark in order to play melodies, voice leading, and lines we didn't think were possible! Within this lesson we'll also work on the all important and often overlooked EAR TRAINING that - together with unlocking the cage - will get you moving into new technical territory.

Peppino D’Agostino Workshops

Most musicians have a way into music. It could be melody, harmony or rhythm - you get to everything eventually! Melodies are certainly a very important element for me, followed by rhythm and then harmony. I write music in a variety of styles from Pop ballads, to styles influenced by Classical and World Music, and also Brazilian and Italian traditional. The guitar is like a mini orchestra of sounds, the perfect instrument for me to write my melodies, my musical ideas and especially to express my emotions. In this course I will show you the elements that define me as a musician. I hope that by studying with me you'll gain confidence in your own playing and refine your skills as a player and a composer. Enjoy it!
