Step 1: Design a Floor-plan

  1. On grid paper, draw the shape of the room and the location of any doors and windows.
  2. Measure the overall length and width of the room in feet or meters and record on the grid.
  3. Measure and record the distance from the corners of the room to the doors and windows.
  4. Measure and record the width of all doors and windows.
  5. Draw in the shape of any permanent features inside of the room such as counters and cabinets.
  6. Measure and record the length, width and distance of features from other parts of the room.

You are now ready to make a basic floor plan in SketchUp using your measurements.

Step 2: Furnish your Floor-plan

  1. Print your floor-plan from step 1.
  2. Draw the top view shape of the major pieces of furniture in the room (tables, chairs, bookcases etc.)
  3. Measure and record the length, width and height for one example of each type of furniture.
  4. Measure and record the distance from something already on your floor-plan to the corner of furniture along the walls.
  5. For furniture that is away from a wall, Measure and record distances from two different walls or other pieces of furniture to a corner of the furniture.

You are now ready to get and modify furniture from 3D Warehouse, or make the furniture yourself and put it in the correct place in the room. Use multiple steps to move furniture along the red, green and blue axis lines for the highest accuracy.

Step 3: Make the walls 3-D

  1. Measure and record onto your floor-plan from step 2 the height of the ceiling, doors, counters and windows.
  2. Measure and record the length, width and height of all the major items hanging from the walls such as whiteboards and bulletin boards.
  3. Record the color of the walls, cabinets, counters and furniture.

In SketchUp, you can pull the walls up to the correct ceiling height. Add the tops of the doors at the correct height. Position the windows, cabinets, counters and any objects on the wall. Don’t forget to put doors in the doorways, add color to everything and make the windows transparent.
