Kylie is an elementary STEM teacher in Piedmont, Oklahoma, and is finishing up her first year in this fulltime role. Kylie will share some of the things she’s learned during this transition to fulltime STEM teaching, including some of her favorite STEM lesson ideas. - Project Lead the Way and BotBall in Middle School and High School

- as of 2012-2013 all elementary schools in MidDel have a STEM club

- being combined with ACE programs in schools not having teachers do it

- at Steed they have STEM club before school, emphasizing 4th and 5th grade (3rd grade also participates)

- idea is to keep students interested in science

- 7:15 am on Thursday mornings, kids come on other days

- doing BotBall now

- is a grade 4-5 specials teacher, sees all 600 students

- 10th year of teaching too (like Christie)

- went through math and science partnership

- got Input from Wes’ students during last Tuesday’s “STEM Showcase Day” in YPS on blogs

Botball

- ideal for Christie’s situation, she has been programming since high school

- has done a little with Tynker in her classroom

Best Robotics, First Robotics are other school robotics programs, all (like Botball) have competitions

- wrote some grants to get started with Botball

- end of summer grants came out for math and science

- Christie wrote one about engineering design process

- have STEM library with lots of books and resources, working with Rose State, working with engineering professors

- Sean Trent (district STEM coordinator in MidDel) at Christie’s school wrote grant with KISS institute, got 4 robots, about $500 per robot to get started, software comes with it (same robot is re-used, nothing else to change, that is relatively less costly to get involved, similar to Lego Mindstorms but uses C language)

- Lego Mindstorms works off a different language, can’t work with BotBall…

Christie has seen younger kids 2nd and 3rd

In MidDel PS at Pleasant Hill Elementary, 3rd grade teacher is using Lego Mindstorms extensively

Christie also uses TI-84 calculator robots

STEM club will be BotBall for Christie’s school, that is the direction the district is going

- good cooking connections to fractions: homemade ice cream

Christie’s students designed an outdoor learning space for their school, but it hasn’t been built yet

STEM program in Putnam City has started, they are focusing in part on gardening

- Mr Johnson is principal at elementary that has this focus

For Christie: STEM is about an integrated lesson, it’s a good lesson

- science and math go so well together, once you understand that engineering process it goes with many other things, using that process - similar to the writing process

- chance to fail is essential in STEM

- think about the edge of the table as the equal sign, how many washers and sticks do you need on the table to balance others on the end?

- Univ of Colorado in Boulder, 1 of top astronomers in the world, Kyper Belt object observation, 10 teams ranging in location, occultations will take place, sometimes at 1 am, will setup telescopes, 11 inch telescope, align to 3 points in the sky, GPS takes over, have to use computer to line up on object, record for a specific amount of time with a video recorder

Doug Taylor, now edtech trainer for Reno schools, taught with Brian and saw college students putting cell phones with handwarmers, bought high altitude balloons with party kit, blew up a weather balloon to 60K feet, used cell phone with GPS to track it so they could get the camera later

- saw that project and learned local Mechanical Engineering dept was doing it

- they helped our class out

- love tying in with others

- thing called the spot that pings your loca

STEM also NEEDS to involve long-term projects

- balloon launches become a perfect kind of projects, science and engineering, lots of data gathering, lots of oral language

- STEM is language intense, it’s a big reason to do it

- lots of writing, becomes an assessment piece for you

- with student writing, student understanding become very important

balloon got up over 107,000 feet!

- later students converted that to inches

Crushing cans with hot water, using tongs

- can do larger cans

- keep doing lessons until kids can tell you why the cans crush

Paper burning, heat rising, students videotaping them, embedding on their blogs

- then students writing the explanation on their blogs

- students are using language at a high level, students asking to use a thesaurus, becoming more articulate

- students presenting about this live over videoconference also challenges them in their fluency and oral language skills
