Preparing an Obituary

You will be preparing your own obituary to facilitate a more gripping and personally meaningful study of life.

Who has experienced a birth and who has experienced a death (a pet, a friend, a relative)? Share those experiences if you feel comfortable doing so.

This unit’s central theme is: development is lifelong. Death is the final challenge. All of us will face our own deaths and experience the deaths of loved ones and friends. How we think about our own mortality can shape how we face life.

In preparing the writing assignment, you should read the newspaper obituary section (several editions if a small-town paper), noting the important elements in specific death notices. Identify (in writing) both the commonalities and unique features of the entries. Then, decide for yourselves the length and specific content of their own obituary.

At the next class period,  you will report both what you learned from the newspaper and, only if you feel comfortable doing so, read your own obituary.
