EN och ETT i svenskan

/ EN and ETT in Swedish

Hur ska man göra för att inte blanda ihop dem? / How to keep them apart and avoid confusion?

English translation partly by Wendy McRae, partly by myself (corrections appreciated!)

1. Inledning

Man ska aldrig försöka lära sig två liknande saker samtidigt! Aldrig!! Ty då blandar man bara ihop dem! Det här med en och ett är ett typexempel på det.

•1. Introduction

One should never attempt to learn two similar things at the same time! Never! You will just mix them up! Learning EN and ETT is a typical example.

Du känner igen fenomenet (problemet) från t.ex. stalaktiter och stalagmiter. Du vet egentligen vilka som hänger i taket, och vilka som står på marken. Men när du ska använda orden, måste du alltid stanna upp och fundera lite extra. Och ofta väljer du fel, trots att du egentligen vet vad som är rätt!

Det beror på att du har övat orden samtidigt. Det är en dålig idé! :-)

You are already familiar with this phenomenon from, for example, stalactites and stalagmites. You do actually know which one hangs from the ceiling and which one rises from the ground. But when you come to use the word, you always have to stop and think for a little while. And you often choose the wrong one, even though you actually know which is correct! This is because you practised these words at the same time. That’s a bad idea!

2 a. Pedagogiska tips, A

När du memorerar nya ord, memorera bara ett-orden tillsammans med artikeln och bestämd form: ett hus─huset, ett barn─barnet, ett hopp─hoppet, ett öde─ödet, etc.

Ett-orden kallas neutrum och utgör 20-25 % av alla svenska substantiv.

•2 a. Pedagogical hints, A

When you memorise new words, only memorise the ETT words with their articles and definite forms:  ett hus─huset, ett barn─barnet, ett hopp─hoppet, ett öde─ödet, etc.

ETT words are called neutrum (neutral) and make up 20-25 % of all nouns in Swedish.

Alla andra kallas utrum och är "resten" och bör memoreras utan artikel men med pluralformen: bil─bilar, stol─stolar, stad─städer, sol─solar, utbildning─utbildningar, tidning─tidningar, etc.

All the others are called utrum and are “the rest.” You should memorise these without the article, but with the plural forms: bil─bilar, stol─stolar, stad─städer, sol─solar, utbildning─utbildningar, tidning─tidningar, etc.

Då har man skapat en skillnad, som är minnespsykologiskt relevant. Du har inte lärt dig med tanke på en/ett samtidigt. Du har bara lärt dig den ena sorten. Det är en mycket bra idé! Då behöver du aldrig stanna upp och fundera och välja fel fastän du vet vad som är rätt.

By doing this you have created a difference for your memory which is psychologically significant. You haven’t learned words by thinking about EN and ETT simultaneously. You have just memorised the one type. This is a very good idea! Now you will never need to stop and consider and choose the wrong option despite knowing which is right.

Skillnaden är också grammatiskt nyttig:

Ty pluralisformen av EN-orden kan man inte alltid gissa rätt. Men pluralisformen av ETT-orden kan man alltid veta utifrån ordformen. Man behöver inte ens gissa. Man vet: Om ETT-ordet slutar på vokal är pluralisändelsen -n. Om det slutar på konsonant är pluralisändelsen noll.

The difference is also grammatically useful: Plural forms of EN words can’t always be guessed correctly. But the plural form of an ETT word can be deduced from the form of the word. You never need to guess. You know this: If an ETT word ends in a vowel then the plural ending is -n. If it ends in a consonant then the plural ending is zero.

OBS: I pluralis finns det ingen skillnad mellan en och ett. Substantiven har antingen pluraländelse eller t-stämpel eller “ingenting”. Dvs då är det ett EN-ord i singularis. Då behövs ingenting extra.

NB: In the plural form there is no difference between EN and ETT. The noun either has a plural ending or a “T-stamp” or “nothing”. “Nothing” in other words means that you have an EN word in the singular form. Nothing extra is needed.

2 b. Pedagogiskt tips B

I min sfi-undervisning brukar jag sätta en "t-stämpel" på ett-orden. De andra orden behöver ingen stämpel. På så vis sparar du ju 75-80 % av ditt minne till andra saker, i stället för om du sätter en "en/ett-stämpel" på 100 % av orden med det oundvikliga resultatet att du blandar ihop dem! :)

•2 b. Pedagogical tips B

In my SFI-teaching I put a “T-stamp” on ETT words. The other words don’t need a stamp. In this way you save 75-80% of your memory for other things, instead of putting an EN/ETT-stamp on all words with the unavoidable result that you will keep mixing them up. :)

Skillnaden är nämligen också grammatiskt relevant: Ty bara t-stämpeln medför någon effekt på omgivande ord. Dvs det som kallas kongruensmärke.

Kongruensmärket för t-stämpeln är ändelsen -t

(och för pluralis och för bestämd betydelse är det -a)

The difference also is grammatically significant: Because only the T-stamp will have an effect on she surrounding words, i.e., that which is called an “agreement marker”.

The agreement marker for the T-stamp is the suffix -t.

(and for the plural and for the definite sense it is -a)

Kongruensmärket ska kopplas på alla substantivets s.k. bestämningar, dvs på dess artiklar, adjektiv och pronomen.

T.ex.:

Utan t-stämpel:

         En öppen dörr.

Dörr-en är öppen > Dörren är öppen.

Med t-stämpel (ta bort -n-):

        En-t öppen-t hus > Ett öppet hus.

        Hus-en-t är öppen-t > Huset är öppet.

The agreement marker is to be added on the so-called attributes of the noun, viz. on its articles, adjectives and pronouns.

Examples:

Without T-stamp:

         En öppen dörr.

Dörr-en är öppen > Dörren är öppen.

With T-stamp (the -n- will disappear):

NB: Both the indefinite article en and the definite article -en are inflected as adjectives! We don’t have two different indefinite articles nor two different definite articles. Only one (1) of each. One single indefinite article en that is a free word, and one single definite article -en that is a suffix.

The en and ett, and the -en and -et, respectively, only spuriously look like different words due to the inflexion with the T-stamp.

(For comparison: Öppen and öppet also is only one single word, although they look different due to the inflection by the T-stamp.)

Observera alltså att det är samma böjning på artiklarna som på adjektiv!

Att “hus-en-t” blir “huset” och att “öppen-t” blir “öppet” är samma regel. En uttalsregel.

Och "ett" är bara den böjda formen av "en" med kongruensmärket -t.

Se närmare min uppsats “Uttalsberoende grammatik”.

So please note again that the articles have the same inflections as the adjectives!

The fact that “hus-en-t” becomes “huset”, and that “öppen-t” becomes “öppet” is due to the same rule. One pronunciation rule.

And “ett” is just the inflected form of “en” with the agreement marker -t.

Read more about this in my paper “Uttalsberoende grammatik” (‘pronunciation-dependent grammar’).

•3. How to know whether there is a T-stamp or not?

You have to learn it by heart! There are an abundance of rules for an abundance of subgroups, perhaps too many to learn. Thus, there are no really useful rules, apart from a few special cases. For instance, that words ending in -ing are EN words. For most of them it is better to memorise each new word as adviced in 2a, above.

That is, the EN words without article but with the plural suffix, which isn’t always predictable; and the ETT words with both the indefinite and definite article.

Vi brukar ju traditionellt dela upp substantiven i sex huvudgrupper:

1. skola─skolor, flicka─flickor

2. bil─bilar, pojke─pojkar

3. polis─poliser, journalist─journalister

4. sko─skor, ko─kor

Med t-stämpel:

5. ett äpple─äpplet, ett hjärta─hjärtat

6. ett hus─huset, ett barn─barnet

Traditionally, the nouns are sorted into six main groups:

1. skola─skolor, flicka─flickor

2. bil─bilar, pojke─pojkar

3. polis─poliser, journalist─journalister

4. sko─skor, ko─kor

With T-stamp:

5. ett äpple─äpplet, ett hjärta─hjärtat

6. ett hus─huset, ett barn─barnet

Alltså, memorera bara så här:

Singular─plural för grupp 1-4.

Obestämd─bestämd form för grupp 5-6.

So, memorize it only in this way:

Singular─plural for groups 1-4.

Indefinite─definite form for groups 5-6.

Om man tar med alla undergrupper blir det över 70 grupper! :-)

T.ex. svan─svanor, ett öga─ögat, två ögon etc. etc.

If you want to include all the subgroups, there will be more than 70 groups! :-)

E.g., svan─svanor, ett öga─ögat, två ögon etc. etc.

Om du måste gissa, gissa då på "en", för de är ju 75-80 % av alla substantiv! Du har 75-80 % chans att gissa rätt.

If you have to guess, then guess “en”, as they constitute 75-80 % of all nouns. You will have a 75-80 % chance of guessing correctly.

4. Lite språkhistoria

Fornsvenskan hade samma system med tre genus, maskulinum, femininum och neutrum (han-hon-det), som t.ex. latinet hade, och som tyska, ryska, polska, etc. har kvar ännu idag. Men utan det historiska perspektivet är det tämligen godtyckligt i svenskan vilka som är en-ord och vilka som är ett-ord. Inte helt godtyckligt men nästan.

•4. Some language history

Ancient Swedish used to have the same three-gender system (masculine, feminine and neuter) as in, e.g., Latin, and as is still today found in German, Russian, Polish, etc. But without this historical perspective it will seem quite arbitrary which words are en words and which are ett words. Not totally arbitrary, but almost.

Unfortunately, you cannot auto-fetch the genders from the other languages into Swedish. The en words originate from old masculine and feminine words that were not people. Non-human words with grammatical masculine and feminine genders dissolved into each other and became “den” words, while humans retained their han and hon. So for personal pronouns we now actually have four genders: han─hon─den─det. (Masculinefeminineutrumneutrum. When I was a school boy, the utrum was called “reale”.)

A couple of years ago “hen” was suggested as a mixed-gender word. Many people like it and use it, others hate it.

•5. How does Swedish deal with new words?

Words borrowed from other languages are always problematic, as we are forced to assign en or ett to them. Sometimes they already have a usable gender from the language of origin, sometimes not. Or it will be arbitrary anyway. Sometimes we end up with double genders: En poäng─två poänger, ett poäng─två poäng, both are correct (but sometimes used a bit differently). Poäng is from French point.

How about all Latin or German loan words that you might recognise? Do we have the “correct” gender? Not always. Ett gevär, en hammare, ett universitet, en realitet...
