In the Beginning

Bernard Sanders was born on September 8, 1941, in Brooklyn, one of New York City's five boroughs. His father, Elias Sanders, was born in Słopnice, Poland (then in the Austro-Hungarian province of Galicia) to a Jewish family; in 1927 he immigrated to the United States at the age of 17.His mother, Dorothy Sanders (née Glassberg), was born in New York City on October 2, 1912, to Jewish immigrant parents from Poland and Russia. Many of Elias's relatives who remained in Poland were killed in the Holocaust.

Sanders has said that he became interested in politics at an early age: "A guy named Adolf Hitler won an election in 1932. He won an election, and 50 million people died as a result of that election in World War II, including 6 million Jews. So what I learned as a little kid is that politics is, in fact, very important."

Daf Bite  –   טעם דף

From the perspective of halakha, kiddushin is a positive commandment whose fulfillment is dependent on the existence of the appropriate opportunity. When a man decides to marry a woman - which he must do in order to fulfill the commandment of peru u'revu (to be fruitful and multiply) - he must do so by means of kiddushin, or betrothal. (In the Torah this betrothal is called eirusin.) Massekhet Kiddushin does not focus of the mitzva involved, nor on the marriage ceremony, rather on the legal ramifications of this union.

The relationship of kiddushin does not complete the marriage, since a second ceremony, called nisuin, is what actually allows the couple to begin their lives as a married couple. Nevertheless, the kiddushin is what establishes the basic relationships and responsibilities between the husband and wife.

According to the Mishna, there are three methods that can be used to create kiddushin:

- Kesef: The man offers the woman money or an object of value, stating that it is for the purpose of marriage

- Shetar: The man gives a document to the woman that indicates that he is marrying her with this paper

 - Bi'ah: An act of sexual intercourse that is performed for the express purpose of consummating marriage.

(Daf Yomi from Steinsaltz.org; Kiddushin - Introduction)

A Story - of a gift

When Buddha sat under the tree of enlightenment he was approached by a young man who heard that Buddha was enlightened. The young man decided to examine Buddha's self-control, so he stood in front of Buddha and began to insult him. He used any possible derogatory word but to no avail.

Buddha did not respond.

After a while, the young man got tired and went away, angry. Soon, after resting a bit, the young man came back for a second round of insulting words. This time he added the family of Buddha and added hurting words that no one can even imagine.

But again, there was no response from Buddha.

The young man was very angry, tired, and surprised. He turned to Buddha and said: "I insulted you in every way I could have thought of, but you did not react to me at all! How could you not?"

Buddha looked him over and said: "If someone gives you a gift, but you refuse to accept it, then, where does the gift remain?"

"With the person who gives it," replied the young man.

Buddha replied: "So I refused to accept your insults..."

Makom baMəgila - Esther and Mordakhai Tomb

Hamadan_-_Mausoleum_of_Esther_and_Mordechai.jpg

The Tomb of Esther and Mordechai is located in Hamadan, Iran. Believed by some to house the remains of the biblical Queen Esther and her cousin Mordechai, it is the most important pilgrimage site for Jews in the country.

Another tradition first recorded during the Middle Ages places the graves of Esther and Mordechai in the Galilean archaeological site of Kfar Bar'am, close to the kibbutz of the same name, Bar'am, along Israel's northern border with Lebanon.

Parasha: Vayikra - Vayikra (Leviticus) 1:1-5:26

Historical Context: Bnei Israel's 40-year journey continues. Location: Against Har Sinai (Mount Sinai). Creation Time: 2448 (1476 bce).

Parashort:  G-d describes the laws of animal sacrifice. G-d explains the different sacrifices that atone for guilt or sins, and distinguishes between sins committed inadvertently and sins committed on purpose. For many crimes, animal sacrifice is a way to gain forgiveness from G-d. (myjewishlearning.com)

Maftir: Zakhor – D’varim (Deuteronomy) 25:17-19 – special maftir for Shabbat Zakhor – Shabbat before Purim.

Haftara: Zakhor - Shmuel Aleph (Samuel 1), 15:1-34

Haftit: Shmuel, the last of the Shoftim, Judges of Israel, appoints Shaul the 1st king of Israel. The nation of Israel was given three commandments to fulfill upon entering the land of Israel: 1) Appoint for yourselves a king. 2) Kill all the Amelekites. 3) Build a Holy Temple for Hashem. More is shul…

Connection to the Parsha: The connection of the Haftorah to Parshat Zakhor: This week is Shabbat Zakhor, remembrance. On the Shabbat before Purim we read from the Torah about the commandment to destroy the memory of the Nation of Amalek. Why? Because when the Israelites miraculously left Egypt, all the nations of the world revered and feared them. All, except the Amalekites, who attacked, because of their jealousy of Hashem’s chosen people. As the saying goes, “the only thing worse than losing, is winning.” Envy breeds the poisonous attitude, “If I can’t be on top, then I’ll just take you down”. This national “mentality” was despised so much by Hashem that he commanded the Israelites to kill all the Amalekites. With the upcoming holiday of Purim, we are reminded to destroy the memory of Amalek, as Haman descended from Amalek. (haftorahman.com)

How can we remember (לזכור) to erase the memory (זכר) of ‘Amalek if we can’t remember whether we need to say “zekher” with segol זֶכֶר or “zeikher” with tsere זֵכֶר?

Speechless in the Parasha - Vayikra

Our Parasha discusses various types of sacrifices. Were they all or mostly animals? Do you notice any vegetarian sacrifices? Can the Third Temple use only vegetarian sacrifices? Will there be in it sacrifices at all, or just prayers?
