Huntsman Tournament Team 60

Tournament Notes:

Report by Jamie White

The Huff & Puff's 60's are still alive and well, but just barely. We ended up in a pool of 4, and the other 3 teams were great teams. We survived the first day, losing both. First game was a team from Hawaii, and we lost 20-14. The 2nd game was against a team from Toronto area, and they beat us 20-17. Both very good games, but the bats were not quite as good as we would have liked. Tuesday, we played the last game in our round-robin pool, and we got our asses severely kicked by a team from Tacoma, Wash area, something like 25-5. They were basically a major-plus team, excellent players and hit the crap out of the ball. I think our outfielders necks were getting sore from watching balls fly over the fence.

Day 3 - Because of our superior play in the round-robin, we have been strategically delegated to the "D" division. Not sure how that works, but maybe that is where we belong. So, we played a team from Fresno, CA. our first game, and we beat them, something like 25-9. Mercy rule. Immediately after, we played the Tulare Blackhawks, another California team, close to Fresno. They were a very good team, big hitters, but we managed to squeak one out, 17-16. We only needed one run in the open inning to win the game. By some great defensive play and a little luck, we didn't allow them to score in the top half of the open inning. One run did it for us, so it was a big win for our crew. These guys had a real good team, and not sure how they ended up in the "D" division. They had some big hitters, but our defense saved the day for us.

Everyone is contributing to our team. Couple guys hit some home runs, Dery Eresman and Rick Parker specifically, but the entire team is doing the job. Pitching has been handled by the 2 Jim's, Fink and Larson, and they have been very good.

The Huff & Puff's 60's are still rolling along, going into the last day tomorrow playing for the gold medal in the "D" division. We got beat bad in the round-robin, so they felt sorry for us. However, since the playoffs got going, so did we. Today, we beat Edmonton Classics, who are actually a pretty good team, but we were on our game and beat them in 5 innings, 19-5. Our offence was strong and no errors were made. All 13 players came to play, no injuries, except the ones we came with, and everyone is contributing.

Tomorrow we play the Tulare Blackhawks again, the same team we beat by 1 in our second game. Tulare is a California team, and they are very good. They won this division last year, and have to beat us twice tomorrow in order to win the gold. Hopefully, we can win the first one, then on our way home.

Jamie White final report:

It's official. The 60's have won the gold medal in the "D" division. We are finally home, so I can sit at the computer to give you my report. We played the The Tulare Blackhawks from California in the final. They had to beat us twice. The first game they kicked our butts, I think about 37-21. I think they scored 3 converted touchdowns in the open inning. We maybe scored one.

Second game was excellent. We played better, hit better, and they cooled off a bit. We won  20-16, so it was a very good game. They could of beat us in the bottom of the 7th, but we held them to only a couple runs, much different than the first game.

We had a real good tournament. Lots of fun and all 13 players came to play. Our opposition for 3 of our games from Tulare were just a great bunch of guys. There were lots of hugs and kisses after the games, and we really enjoyed their company. Actually, for our two teams to be in the "D" division was kind of not fair for the rest of that group, but we have no control where they put us. I guess our 3 losses in the first round were enough to delegate us to where we went.

Great groups of guys we played with and against. Fun was had by all and there will be many pictures to follow.

Good luck to the 55's and 70's.
