Joshua D. Baird

BIOGRAPHY

Joshua David Baird (1979- ) has long been intrigued by the creative process.  Some of his earliest memories include watching his father build an easel from scratch and paint a portrait of his mother.  Born in Salt Lake City, Utah; Josh’s early years were influenced by sculptors, painters, musicians, photographers and the distinctive Utah landscape.  While visiting family members at a young age, Josh remembers gazing out over Cedar Breaks; perhaps his first encounter with the awe-inspiring colors, curious geologic formations and spacious vistas of the Colorado Plateau.

Drawing and painting have always been Josh's primary means of communicating his interests.  He began exploring landscape as a subject after noticing a variety of Albert Bierstadt prints while volunteering at a rest home.

Since then, Josh has become a lifelong student of the greatest American landscape painters from Thomas Moran to Richard Diebenkorn; and Southwestern landscape painters from Maynard Dixon to V. Douglas Snow.  Josh admires these artists for their sensitivity to the essence of the landscape.  They help us see more than we normally see, and enable us to feel as they feel.  Josh's intentions are to paint at this level of expression: where the complexities of nature are translated into simple, visual poetry.

He studied art at Brigham Young University and Utah State University.  He received both a Bachelor of Arts in drawing and painting, and a Master of Arts in art education from Southern Oregon University.

Josh's preferred medium is oil, and the primary subject found in his artwork is the landscape of the Southwestern United States.  That being said; Josh is continually experimenting with new subjects and media, and constantly exploring the full continuum of pictorial representation and abstraction.

He has won many awards at various exhibitions and plein aire painting events which include three 1st places at Plein Air Paradise in Midway, Utah.  And yet he has also "hung" 5 different solo exhibitions of abstract landscapes.  His paintings are part of numerous collections including the Salt Lake County Art Collection and the Springville Art Museum.

Josh currently resides in Kanab, Utah where he spends his time playing bluegrass music, painting the surrounding landscapes and sculpting the minds of America's future as the local high school art teacher.

Josh's artwork is currently represented by David Ericson Fine Art in Salt Lake City, Utah.  For more information: www.davidericsonfineart.com or www.joshuabaird.com.
