Old Terran Republic
Colonization of Auraxis
November 28, 2345
An anomaly described as a "fracture in space" is discovered. It disappears weeks later, before exploratory probes can reach it to investigate.
January 18, 2426
Responding to intelligence indicating imminent and simultaneous attacks, Earth’s six greatest countries declare war on each other. The planet's major resources are used up in the ensuing conflict, and the fight intensifies over what little is left.
March 16, 2444
The space-fracture anomaly reappears, nearly 100 years after its original sighting. This time, probes are able to reach it and identify multispectral transmissions as they exit the fracture in the direction of earth. They are believed to be some form of scan issued from the other side, and are considered by many as a clear indication of intelligent alien life that is aware of humanity. When the fracture closes several weeks later, Pluto is inexplicably destroyed.
December 19, 2444
The existence of the wormhole is made public. In response to the news of an extraterrestrial power that may have directly caused the destruction of Pluto, peace talks between the Earth's major powers begin.
May 13, 2445
World leaders sign the Armistice, bringing an end to the global war begun 19 years prior in 2426. Over the next several decades, borders fall and governments merge until all nations unite under a single entity known as the Terran Republic. Under the Declaration of Constancy, a council with representatives from every former nation is created and an executive system of elected Presidents begins.
July 3, 2542
The space-fracture, now commonly referred to as the wormhole, reopens exactly 98.3 years after its last appearance. No further emissions are detected, prompting some to question the veracity of the original reports a century prior. After several weeks, it vanishes again.
By June, 2582
Free from the fear of a powerful alien presence, colonial explorers have traveled the solar system and begin the long process of terraforming planets and their moons for human habitation.
Explorer Tom Connery discovers the Moon Belt, a sparsely populated sub-section of the Kuiper Belt made up of the fragments of hundreds of destroyed moons—and the shattered remains of Pluto—extending from Neptune's orbit to beyond. His team discovers a distinctly unnatural signal emanating from a moon fragment, but lacks the equipment to pinpoint and investigate it and instead returns to Earth.
Terran Republic Vice President Martin Harris dies of old age and Tom Connery is asked by President Sylvia Wyatt to fill the position for the remaining 6 months of her term. To the surprise of many, Connery accepts.
November 10, 2618
Terran Republic Vice President Tom Connery runs for and is elected to the office of President of the Terran Republic.
Terran Republic President Tom Connery retires from office, after three successful four-year terms, and begins preparations to return to the Moon Belt.
February 14, 2630
Business Forward, an entity co-founded by the CEOs of some of the solar system's largest corporations, holds a summit at which the members agree to closely monitor the activity of former Terran Republic President Tom Connery.
July 30, 2630
The term "New Conglomerate" is coined as a reference to Business Forward's plan to unite major corporations, banks, labor unions, and private protection firms under a single banner to help combat the Terran Republic's restrictive policies towards the private sector.
March 4, 2631
Former Terran Republic President Tom Connery discreetly recruits noted xenobiologist Henry Briggs for his mission to the Moon Belt.
Former Terran Republic President Tom Connery and xenobiologist Henry Briggs locate an alien artifact emanating strange signals in the Moon Belt. Briggs touches the idol and claims to have received a vision that greatly changes him, but retains only one distinct memory from the event: the word "Vanu".
Unbeknownst to him, he became the first human to have their nervous system augmented by Vanu nanites, preparing him for rebirthing upon receiving a signal from a warpgate.
Former Terran Republic President Tom Connery's second Moon Belt expedition returns to Earth and announces the discovery of an alien artifact: An intricate humanoid figurine. This discovery ushers in a new space exploration boom, bringing with it a host of advances in spacefaring technology and the exploration of the solar system up to twice the distance of Pluto's remains. No additional artifacts are found.
January 21, 2636
Tom Connery petitions the Terran Republic for resources to mount an exploratory mission through the wormhole—which scientists predict will reopen in 2640 and remain open for at least two weeks—using a volunteer crew. The Senate agrees to fund the expedition if he can enlist the requisite 150,000 volunteers within three weeks, by February 12.
February 3, 2636
Tom Connery presents signed affidavits containing more than 300,000 volunteers to the Terran Republic Senate. He is granted resources to recondition up to 200 ships for his mission through the wormhole.
May 13, 2638
An exploratory fleet of 500 ships, crewed by 500,000 volunteers and led by former Terran Republic President Tom Connery, launches from Earth, bound for the wormhole with the intention of exploring its far side. The fleet consists of Terran Republic military peacekeepers; New Conglomerate-affiliated corporation executives and their hired enforcers and civilian labor force; and many scientists, engineers, and tech experts eager to learn more about the possibility of alien life.
October 20, 2640
Exactly as predicted, the wormhole reopens. The first wave of Connery's fleet, caught by the fracture's gravity well, is deposited on the far side of the wormhole before even engaging engines. Subsequent waves attempt to pass through but most are destroyed or unable to reach it as the wormhole destabilizes and closes. Ultimately, about 100,000 people are trapped on the far side of the wormhole in uncharted space.
March 2, 2641
Mission Commander Connery intensifies military patrols on board all vessels as insurgent activity aboard the fleet begins to escalate.
December 22, 2641
Mission Commander Connery institutes strict curfews as the insurgency grows bolder and several deaths occur due to fighting.
January 2, 2642
53 insurgents assault the weapons depot aboard military vessel Explorer-5 and, using the stolen arms, take the bridge. Commander Connery orders an armed response, reclaiming the bridge at the expense of 70 lives. In response, martial law is declared and an emergency vote taken on security measures. The vote to extend military presence and ban gatherings larger than three people passes.
January 6, 2642
Immediately following negotiations between the fleet's leadership and representatives of the insurgency, the ship on which they are meeting—the Discovery-7—is destroyed, taking the lives of all 592 aboard including Mission Commander Tom Connery and Colonel Richmond Morgannis. Lieutenant Commander Brent Waterson is named Provisional Commander.
January 7, 2642
A vote is again taken on enacting stricter security measures. The vote to give the military emergency powers and full fleet control passes by a margin of 2%. Provisional Commander Waterson assumes full military authority over the fleet.
April 10, 2642
A planet suitable to be terraformed is discovered by fleet scientists. Dubbed "New Earth", the fleet charts a course toward it with an estimated arrival of January, 2643.
The fleet, adrift for roughly 3 years arrives at New Earth and begins the process of terraforming and colonizing the world.
Geologist Isaac Waites names the exotic violet crystal found all over New Earth “Auraxium”.
November 6, 2650
While on a spelunking expedition into New EarthAuraxis’s crust, xenobiologist Henry Briggs discovers an alien artifact identical to the one he discovered alongside former Terran Republic President Tom Connery in 2634. He receives another vision and becomes the first human to be directly spoken to by an alien species.
Upon the discovery that Auraxium composes in the planetary core and influences New Earth’s orbit, Isaac Waites proposes the name “Auraxis”. On the 7th anniversary of planetfall, the name wins the majority vote.
An anonymous Terran Republic pilot flies safely through a spacetime anomaly created by a warpgate, emerging from another warpgate thousands of kilometers away. He is executed for risking triggering a catastrophic collapse.
June 12th, 2658
After 15 years of terraforming, Auraxis’ atmosphere is declared breathable when Henry Briggs introduces an implant to process excess carbon.
For unknown reasons, xenobiologist Henry Briggs commits suicide.
Nanite Systems successfully creates the first nanite reverse engineered from Vanu technology.
February 7, 2739
Promise of a reconnection with the almost mythical Terra turns the eyes of Auraxis from their ideological feuds to the sky as the wormhole is due to reopen. The remaining ships of the Terran fleet assemble near the predicted epicenter. Not even the faintest spacetime abnormality was detected that day. Disappointment quickly turned to anger and unrest. The New Conglomerate seized the opportunity, denouncing the Terran Republic for “enslaving its citizens with false hope”.
May 13th, 2739
Liberty’s Call, a movement, roughly a hundred strong, for a ‘Freer Auraxis’, began Armistice Day protests in the Auraxium Square of the Terran capital Invicta, attracting thousands of onlookers before the presidential palace Sanguine Keep to protest the injustices of the Republic’s regime. Soldiers of the Republican Guard opened fire on the protesting civilians, cutting down every last demonstrator. Onlookers tried to flee, only to run into the waiting arms of the Republican Guard. Hundreds were arrested and deported to the Kane Prison Compound on Searhus for walking with the protest.
June 5th, 2740
New Conglomerate breaks away from the Terran Republic, building underground cities in old mines to house a growing number of citizens fed up with TR rule. Nanite Systems, previously a New Conglomerate company, declares its neutrality.
Rebellious settlements, guerilla terrorists, and deserters plague the Terran Republic, backed under the table by the New Conglomerate. A proxy war is waged between the two factions.
Both factions research auraxium and nanite technology extensively in a xenotech arms race. The Terran Republic, possessing more extensive resources, has a clear lead, reinforcing their territory with militarized nanite tech including gate shields, vehicle nanoforge pads, and eventually rebirthing infrastructure.
In 2825, Nanite Systems develops the first Optical Neural Network.
October 12, 2840
Briggs, after being trapped in purgatory inside the Moonbelt artifact’s rebirthing matrix, is rebirthed in secret at Subterranean Nanite Analysis. He escapes and joins the growing Adherents of Vanu movement he started two centuries prior.
June 21, 2845
The Terran Republic and New Conglomerate begin full-scale war after peace talks are interrupted by confusing reports of armed conflict in the Kaorr desert region. The New Conglomerate stages an assault on the Kane Prison compound on Searhus. Though pushed back by the arrival of the TR’s first rebirth-enabled unit, they managed to free their captive comrades, making their army equal to the TR’s.
The followers of Vanu declare themselves an independent Sovereignty.
October 30, 2845
The newly formed VS stage an assault on the TR’s research facility Subterranean Nanite Analysis with the help of scientists on the inside. Rebirthing technology is leaked for all of Auraxis to utilize. It is hoped that immortality will force the warring TR and NC to make peace.
November 2845 - February 2847
When rebirthing does little to cease hostilities, the VS, a small collection of scientists and believers with little combat experience, are forced to become allies with the NC. They begin building up their own military, ostensibly for the purpose of retrieving Vanu artifacts from active battlefields and TR territory.
Asymmetric warfare largely focused on Amerish with widespread instances of domestic terrorism on both NC and TR civilians. NC PMCs spend this time on Hossin building a massive stockpile of gear for a planned offensive on Indar. NC and TR slowly field rebirth tech, though it is first relegated to elite units.
March - June 2847
Backed by first generation rebirth for their entire armies, the NC and TR fight the largest battle of the war. The entire NC military pours through the Southwest Warpgate onto Indar on March 5th. Unprepared for the scale, the TR is pushed back across the desert and try to make a stand at Mao. When they are certain the defense is doomed, the TR destroy the rebirth node at Mao and fall back to a final defensive line near the North Warpgate. With Indar nearly under their complete control and fearing what would happen if there was another extended siege, the NC opt to deploy WMDs against the TR lines.
July - August 2847
Following the ineffective WMD attack that razed key Vanu ruins, the VS determine that the NC represent a threat greater than their current usefulness. They activate a long planned for contingency known as Operation Vidar in which small strike teams of VS disable or destroy most of the active WMDs on or above Auraxis and lock down Hossin's warpgates, cutting off all rebirthing on the NC’s stronghold continent. Their hope was that the sudden collapse of the NC's base for war would leave them weak and thus allow the VS to dominate the field with their small but powerful army.
They are unsuccessful in this last phase as, even in the TR’s weakened state, the VS could not destroy them head to head. Several TR and hundreds of NC soldiers are killed forever as a result of the Indar campaign.
A small sect of VS researchers set up a lab on now-empty Hossin.
Both the NC and TR retreat from the field in the face of the changed landscape of war. Both factions disperse their industrial base, including rebirth, for war to ensure a decisive strike would be incapable of knocking them out of the war. This begins the war as we know it.
2848 - June 2859
The unfortunate result of dispersing the tools they use to make war is that there are constant combat operations on every front. No faction is able to build an army large enough for a decisive strike against anything without risking huge losses on other fronts. While battles rage across all the continents, front lines prove relatively static. Even successful offensives rarely manage to shift the lines more than a few dozen kilometers before it runs out of steam, unable to sustain itself in the face of the staggering losses of the war.
June 26th, 2859
Officially, the NC’s Sigma Squad successfully reactivates the rebirthing matrix on Hossin. The swamp opens up as a new front in the war. The three empires understand the value of a secure base of operations and deploy massive resources to try and conquer it. Unfortunately, the swamps of Hossin prove just as fruitless as anywhere else on Auraxis and no faction is able to gain a decisive edge.
Unofficially, unbeknownst to all but a few select individuals, these reports are a cover story for an event that could have spelled doom for all of Auraxis were it not for the actions of soldiers from all three factions.
