Youth / Child Protection
- Two-deep leadership - All activities involving children should be led by at least two responsible adults. If necessary, one adult and two or more youth is allowable. This policy is to protect our children and avoid false accusations of inappropriate activities.
- One-on-one contact between activity coordinators and youth / children is prohibited
- Privacy of all youth and children is to be respected
- Discipline - Primary responsibility for any discipline should remain with parents or legal guardians but if necessary during RE or other adult-led activities, should be constructive and consistent with UU values. Examples of prohibited discipline include any form of corporal punishment, isolation, humiliation, or ridicule. Examples of positive discipline include verbal praise of positive behaviours being exhibited by other youth or politely asking a youth to wait for their turn to speak.
- Hazing and bullying including physical, emotional, and digital are prohibited.
- Mandatory child abuse reporting - All persons involved in SI must report to local authorities any good-faith suspicion or belief that any child is or has been physically or sexually abused, physically or emotionally neglected, exposed to any form of violence or threat, exposed to alcohol or illegal substances, exposed to any form of sexual exploitation including the possession, manufacture, or distribution of child pornography, online solicitation, enticement, or showing of obscene material. This duty cannot be delegated to any other person. Immediately notify the SIPC and/or UUA representative of this report, or of any violation of the SI youth/child protection policies, so they may take appropriate action for the safety of our youth, make appropriate notifications, and follow up with investigating agencies.
Water Safety
- All pool activities require a campus-employed Lifeguard. This is a campus policy and must be respected.
- Parents or guardians are strongly encouraged to be present to help supervise youth in the pool, to ensure that youth follow all rules, and to ensure youth don’t engage in activities beyond their swimming ability.
- Prohibited activities (slip-n-slides? Portable pools?) and prohibited items in the pool
- Youth and children are strongly encouraged to use the buddy system so that there is at least one other person in the water keeping track of each child.
- Canoeing, hiking, and other off-campus excursions are not official SI sponsored activities. Therefore, youth and children may participate in such activities only if their parent or guardian attends so that they can assume full responsibility for their safety.
Alcohol, Tobacco, and Drugs
- Oberlin has a strict policy against any tobacco use while on campus (https://new.oberlin.edu/office/wellness/tobacco-free/). This includes the public sidewalks, walkways, and streets through campus. Portable electronic vaporizers are not permitted for indoor use but are permitted for outdoor use at least 30 feet from campus buildings. Portable vaporizers may not be used during outdoor, public events.
- The personal consumption of alcohol, in any form, on campus is restricted to persons who are at least 21 years of age.
- The SI Pub is restricted to adults of at least 18 years of age. Although young adults under 21 may attend, alcohol must not be provided to those under 21 years of age.
- Anyone who has consumed any amount of alcohol may not operate any vehicles on campus, including golf carts, within 8 hours.
- The use of illegal substances is strictly prohibited. Federal law prohibits any use of marijuana, including medical, and all SI participants must agree to not possess or use marijuana on campus.
