Baron Joicey was actively involved in raising money during the First World War by helping to organise charity auctions for the British Red Cross. He met de László through this work as the artist donated blank canvases to be sold to the highest bidder in exchange for their portrait being painted by him. This drawing may have been a token of friendship between sitter and artist.

De László painted a three-quarter length portrait of Baron Joicey in 1929 [5912]. Other members of the family painted were: the sitter’s daughter Marguerite in 1917 [5907], his second son, Hugh, later 3rd Baron, in 1923 [5904] and his daughters-in-law, Joan in 1923 [5902] and Georgina in 1924 [5909].

For biographical notes on the sitter, see [5912].
