Like these Englishmen arriving in what we now call Virginia, you will be using everything you learned to build your own colony.

Through this unit, you have learned a great deal about the English (later called British) Colonization of North America. In this assessment, you will be demonstrating what you have learned through your creation of your own colony.

To complete the Final Benchmark Assessment please follow the steps below:

STEP 1

Settle and found your own colony! This will be an English colony founded sometime between 1585-1700 and since this will be an imaginary colony, you are allowed to be a bit more creative. Before you get started, you will need to sign up to an online poster creation service. Don’t worry, its free! Go to lucidpress.com and get signed up

STEP 2

Complete the following questions. Your responses to them will make up the majority of the information found on your online poster.

  1. Name your settlement or colony In what region of the U.S. are you located? Creatively write this in the center of your online posterboard.

  1. Who are your leaders? Write this on your online poster.

  1. What is your process of founding your colony? Who is funding your colony and how are you going about this process? What type of colony will you be? Write this on your poster as well.

  1. What are your reasons for colonizing? Write your rationale in a way that it can be read or clicked upon to be read on your poster.

  1. How are you recruiting individuals to your colony? What is your sales pitch? “Draw” or place images that show this on your poster.

  1. Will indentured servants and slavery be allowed? Why or why not? Write your explanation in a way that it can be read or clicked upon to be read on your poster.

  1. Where will your colony be located? Create a map of your location on your poster. Include such important geography as:

  1. Is your colony on an island? Is it located a few miles inland from the ocean or is it right on the coastline?

  1. What is your form of trade? Is it lumber, tobacco, grain, fishing, fur, livestock? Remember, this will depend on the geography of your colony.

  1. What are the religious or spiritual values of your colony?
