Good evening Glenn families,

I hope our students’ summer break is off to a great start!

Thank you, 5th Graders

As we close out the 2024-25 school year, our entire team would like to congratulate our 5th grade students. It was wonderful to celebrate their elementary careers during the final week of school. I know they will go on to accomplish amazing things in middle school and beyond. Even though you’re moving on to new adventures, feel free to contact your Glenn team if you ever need anything.

Congratulations - our Lions did it again!

Our students accomplished some miraculous achievements this year!  For the fourth consecutive year, Glenn’s students achieved academic gains. In fact, our students achieved the highest overall math, reading, and ACCESS scores in school history! In addition, Glenn significantly improved student attendance and nearly cut our chronically absent student list in half. These accomplishments can only happen when supportive families, brilliant students, and exceptional teachers work together.  Thank you for another remarkable year at Glenn!

Summer Meals for Children

Durham Public Schools is advertising free breakfast and lunch for children 18-year-old and younger between June 16th and August 1st. You may call (919) 560-2370 or visit the Summer Meals Program site for locations. You may also text FOOD or COMIDA to 304-304 during the summer months to find a site near you with free meals for kids.

Summer Office Hours

Our front office is open Mondays through Thursdays (8:00 am - 4:00 pm) between now and mid-August. Please call our front office at (919) 560-3920 if you need anything. If you’re visiting campus, please enter campus at the first entrance near the new bus loop.  You may enter the building this summer through the doors near our K/1 playground. We can’t wait to show you our new building at Open House in August!

New Technology Platforms in 2025-26

Durham Public Schools is moving from PowerSchool to Infinite Campus for all enrollment purposes next year. In addition, the district is moving from Talking Points to Rooms for school to family communication. Please look out for updates regarding the conversions in July and August. You’re welcome to call us anytime with questions.

On behalf of the entire team, I hope your family has the very best summer possible.  We can’t wait to see our Glenn Lions again in August!

Good evening Glenn families,

As we enter the last week of school, we can’t thank all of our students and families enough!  We’ve had another amazing year at Glenn and our success has so much to do with the support, partnership, and commitment of our families. On this year’s anonymous DPS Teacher Working Conditions survey, 100% of our teachers reported that they “wouldn’t want to work at any other school.” Thank you for helping us feel so connected to the entire Glenn community!

Last Day of School

Our official last day of school is Wednesday, June 11th.  It’s an early release day for all Durham Public Schools.  Students will dismiss at 12:15 pm.

Students are expected to arrive at school on time for the day.  Families may begin entering the building for seating 30 minutes before your child’s ceremony.  Parking will be available in the back of the building and families can give their tickets to the welcome table staff.  Students should have received their 5 tickets last week.  If you did not receive them in your student’s folder, please call our office at (919) 560-3920.  After the ceremony, families may sign their students out for the day with their teachers.  We’re looking forward to celebrating our students’ fantastic elementary school careers!

Tuesday’s Kindergarten Promotion Ceremony

Our promotion ceremony for all three Kindergarten classes begins at 9:00 am on Tuesday morning.  Families are asked to park in the back of our building near the gym and soccer fields.  Our staff will have a welcome table by the gym and families can begin entering the school for seating at 8:30 am.  Students should have received their 5 tickets last week.  If you did not receive them in your student’s folder, please call our office at (919) 560-3920.  After the ceremony, our students will enjoy some refreshments and meet with their teacher.  If you would like to sign out your student for the day, please inform your child’s teacher.

Good evening Glenn families,

Summer Notes

With just 8 days left, we wanted to share some summer notes with families.  While our building will be under construction this summer, our school and office will remain open Mondays - Thursdays (7 am to 4 pm).  If your family needs anything this summer, please feel free to call me or our office anytime.

Over the summer, we encourage our students to have a ton of fun with family and friends!  In addition, reading at least 20 minutes per day can help to ensure that students don’t lose all of the learning they gained during the year.  If your family would like reading resources over the summer, please let me know.  Finally, students will continue to have access to Reflex and Lexia if they would like to work on their skills ahead of next year.

We can’t wait for our returning Lions to see the new building in August!  Our PreK, Kindergarten, 1st grade, 4th grade, and 5th grade students will be in our brand-new wing next year.  Our 2nd and 3rd grade rooms will be in completely refurbished classrooms.  All rooms will have new furniture, lighting, technology, and more!  We’re so excited for you to see the improvements at Open House in August!

Last Day of School

Good evening Glenn families,

Congratulations to our Lions!

While we gear up for End-of-Grade tests, we still have so many things to celebrate!  Our students possess so many gifts and talents.  Just last week, Ms. Gulley led our final chorus concert of the year and dozens of students ran their final Girls on the Run 5k race.  We’re so lucky to have such amazing artists, singers, poets, athletes, and brilliant students at Glenn.

Books on Break

We’re so grateful for our amazing partnership with Book Harvest!  They are supporting our Glenn Lions again this year.  On May 21st and May 22nd, every Glenn student will have the chance to select 10 new books to keep for their permanent home library.  It’s such a special and exciting day each year.  Please look out for these books as they come home next week!

No School on Monday, May 26th

There is no school on Monday, May 26th, as Durham Public Schools observes the Memorial Day Holiday.  We hope our students enjoy the three-day weekend as we prepare for the final stretch of school.

Last Call for School Tours

Next week is our final week of school tours for prospective Glenn students!  If you know a family who is considering Glenn for their child, please encourage them to call me directly.  Our team would love to host a tour - allowing families to see classrooms, meet staff, and learn about the Glenn Way!  We would love to show families our new state-of-the-art building plans, understand the uniqueness that Glenn provides, and answer any questions they may have.

If you know a family (at any grade level) interested in coming to Glenn next year, please encourage them to complete this form.

Good evening Glenn families,

Happy Mother’s Day!

On behalf of the Glenn team, we would like to wish all of our Glenn mothers, grandmothers, and caregivers a Happy Mother’s Day!  Your care, love, and commitment are felt every single day, as we have the opportunity to work with the very best student and family community around.  We hope you had the special day you deserve.

Library Books and Books on Break!

Our librarian, Ms. Januzzi, has asked that all library books be returned by Monday, May 12. Most students have returned their books, but there are many books that still need to be returned. Please ask your student if they have any library books at home and help them find their book if they know it is still at home.

All students will be choosing 10 new books to bring home and keep forever on May 21 & 22. Book Harvest is bringing brand new books for students to choose from to bring home. https://www.bookharvest.org/

You are also encouraged to go to a Durham County Library this summer. Library cards are free and allow your family to check out books and other items, in person and online. https://durhamcountylibrary.org/

End of Grade (EOG Information) for 3rd - 5th graders

It’s hard to believe that our students begin assessments in just 15 school days.  Students received their final benchmark results and they’re working hard to address any areas for growth.  Please know that our testing window will run from 8:00 to 11:00 am each day and students are unable to get signed out during a testing session.  Also, we hope our students get tons of sleep, arrive by 7:45 am, and eat a great breakfast.  We will offer Bojangles biscuits to any interested students on testing days.  Thank you so much for your help in getting our students ready to do their very best!

Good evening Glenn families,

Early Release on Friday

This Friday, May 9th is an early release day for Durham Public Schools.  Students will dismiss at 12:15 pm.

Teacher Appreciation Week

This week is Teacher Appreciation Week (May 5th - May 9th)!  While I’m biased, I believe we have the greatest teaching team in Durham.  In a very difficult educational climate state-wide and nationally, I’m proud to share that we’re among a small group of schools with a fully staffed team for four consecutive years.  Our teachers are skilled, collaborative, and kind - and their efforts have translated into the greatest academic gains in the city.  If you would like to write a note to your child’s teacher - or another Glenn staff member - you may complete this Appreciation Form.  Thank you for your partnership and the opportunity to work with your children every day!

The Final Countdown - 20 School Days to Go!

Thank you to all of our parents and caregivers who have helped to get students to school for extracurricular activities and events lately.  Just last week, students attended a family picnic, chorus practice, All-County Chorus, Girls on the Run, soccer practice, after school tutoring, and so much more.  Your partnership, involvement, and sacrifice help to add so much joy to our community.

It’s hard to believe, but there are only 20 school days left before students begin End-of-Grade testing.  Our Glenn Lions have shown more academic growth than any other Durham school over the past four years.  We’re so excited to see their hard work pay off again.  Our hope is to have the best student attendance month of the year as we prepare for year-end assessments.  We have talked with our students about getting back to routines, going to bed early, and staying off devices late at night.  Thank you for getting your students to school and ready to learn!

Final Progress Reports of the Year

Students will receive their final progress reports of the year in Thursday folders this week.  As always, we encourage you to contact your child’s teacher with any questions.  Our K-3 students are in the midst of completing year-end reading assessments (mCLASS) and 3-5 students will begin End-of-Grade (EOG) assessments beginning on Friday, May 30th.  You will receive summary information when those are completed as well.

Good evening Glenn families,

Attendance Thank You

I have had the privilege to be on the Glenn team for nearly four years.  Last week was the best student attendance week I have seen during that span.  Thank you to all of the family members, friends, and caregivers that work so hard every day to ensure students arrive on time and ready to go.  We had several days with an attendance rate of at least 96% - meaning only approximately 20 students missed school.  We can’t thank you enough!

Congratulations, Ms. Russell!

Please join me in congratulating Ms. Russell, one of our extremely talented and committed instructional assistants.  Last week, Ms. Russell was named Glenn’s 2024-25 Instructional Assistant of the Year.  She was recognized by our team for her long-standing commitment to the school community, care for students and families, and teaching ability.  Thank you, Ms. Russell!

Teacher Appreciation Week

Teacher Appreciation Week is approaching quickly!  We will recognize our outstanding teachers between Monday, May 5th and Friday, May 9th.

We are so grateful for your help!  The number of student registrations to date is much higher than this time last year - and it’s because of your support!  Student registrations help us secure more teaching positions.  We believe we have the very best teaching staff in Durham and we desperately want to keep everyone at Glenn!  If you know a family (at any grade level) interested in coming to Glenn next year, please encourage them to complete this form.  We’re also happy to provide tours for prospective families.  Please encourage interested families to call me soon.  Thank you so much!

Congratulations to Ms. Fugon!

Another congratulations goes out to Ms. Fugon, an incredible first grade teacher who received the “BEST Educator of the Month” award from the Bull City BEST organization.  Ms. Fugon was nominated and received the honor due to her collaborative spirit, instructional skill set, and outstanding classroom community.

CogAT Test for 2nd Graders this week

All DPS students in grade two take the Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT) each year. Our students will be testing March 3rd - March 7th.

The CogAT is a test of your child’s overall reasoning ability developed from in-school and out-of-school experiences. CogAT is different from other assessments students take as this data shows teachers how students learn instead of what they have learned.

You can help your child be prepared for the CogAT by ensuring they have had a good night’s sleep, feel confident about their ability, and arrive at school on time each morning. Your support and efforts to make this a successful experience for our students are greatly appreciated.

Please reach out to your child's teacher if you have any questions.

Good evening Glenn families,

Glenn Shoutouts

Last week was a great one at Glenn!  Five of our Glenn Lions were honored at an Arts ceremony at North Carolina Central University.  Their work will be displayed at NCCU’s art museum for the next month.  This week, five additional Lions will be performing at the Evening to Shine at the Durham Performing Arts Center.  We can’t wait to watch their brilliance in front of thousands of community members.  Please check out our social media accounts for exciting news and updates at Glenn!

Bus Driver Appreciation Week!

As you know, there are bus driver shortages in Durham and across the country.  While some schools are still short on drivers and have routes that don’t run each day, we’re grateful at Glenn to be fully staffed.  Having driven a bus years ago, I can tell you that it’s incredibly hard work!  If you or your child has the chance this week, please thank your driver in your own way - a card, student artwork, or simply a smile!

Early Release Day (February 14th) and Teacher Workday (February 17th)

This Friday, February 14th is a district-wide early release day.  Students will dismiss at 12:15 pm and students should arrive home 2 hours earlier than usual.

Good evening Glenn families,

It was fantastic to finally have a full week of school with our students!

Our Glenn Community

This past week was very challenging for so many of our Glenn families, students, and staff.  Because of national stories and current events around new immigration policies, families across the country are concerned for their safety. Our primary mission is to ensure that all students, documented or undocumented, receive the opportunity for an outstanding education in a safe and welcoming environment. We will continue to explore ways to support families who are understandably concerned about the current climate. In that light, please feel free to call us anytime with questions about how schools would address the issues that are being discussed around the country. Please know that we value every single family and we’re so grateful your children attend Glenn.  Our families’ diverse backgrounds, stories, and experiences make our school a better and stronger community.

Congratulations to Mr. Rodriguez - Glenn’s Beginning Teacher of the Year!

Please join me in congratulating Mr. Rodriguez, our 2025 Beginning Teacher of the Year.  Mr. Rodriguez, a 2nd grade teacher, was selected by his peers for his unwavering commitment to his students and their families, exceptional instructional practices, and collaborative spirit.  He is selfless and talented - and embodies everything we appreciate in a team member.  Let’s root for him as he enters the district’s Beginning Teacher of the Year contest.

Attendance Shoutout

Thank you to all of our students and families for an outstanding week of attendance!  Out of 450 students, we had just over 20 student absences each day.  It was one of the very best attendance weeks we have had all year.  Our school is a better place when every student comes to school!

Black History Month Celebration

February marks Black History Month and we’re thrilled to invite all Glenn students and families to our annual Black History Month Celebration on Thursday, February 27th (5:30 - 7:00 pm).  The evening will feature student work from daily lessons, projects, and presentations.  Families will have the opportunity to participate in a gallery walk of student work, watch student presentations, and eat treats from various black-owned Durham businesses.  We hope to see you there!

Good evening Glenn families,

We’re so excited to finally have a full week of school with our students.  It’s been a difficult stretch with snow and bus challenges, but we’re hopeful to have 100% student attendance every day this week.  Let’s have an amazing week!

ACCESS Testing for English as a Second Language (ESL) Students

Every year, our students who receive English as a Second Language (ESL) services must complete four assessments over the next month in writing, reading, speaking, and listening.  If your student receives ESL services, please ask them about their preparation.  Our students have been practicing and working so hard in recent weeks.  Over the past few years, Glenn’s ESL students have ranked in the top 5 of all schools in Durham.  We can’t wait to see our students do it again!

ACCESS testing for ESL Kindergarten students begins this week.  Testing for 1st and 2nd graders begins the week of February 3rd.  3rd through 5th graders will begin in mid-February.  Please reach out to your child’s teachers with questions.

2nd Quarter Report Cards

Report cards will be distributed to families this Thursday, January 30th.  After reviewing report cards, we encourage families to reach out to teachers with questions or to learn ways to partner at home.

5th Grade Families - DPS Middle School Lottery Deadline this Friday

Thank you to all of the 5th grade families that attended our virtual middle school meeting last week.  If you’re interested in applying for a DPS magnet middle school, the deadline is this Friday, January 31st.  If you need help applying, please visit our school Wednesday through Friday during school hours this week.  Our team is available to help!

As a reminder, all DPS middle and high schools will undergo the redistricting process in the 2025-26 school year.  You may use this website to find your base middle school by entering your home address.  Your child will automatically be enrolled in your base school.  If you’re interested in applying for other options, please see below.

Please visit this website to learn more about all of the options in our region.  As a DPS parent myself, I know this information and these processes can be extremely complicated and confusing at times.  With that said, I’m happy to answer any questions you have anytime.  Please feel free to call me or our counselors with questions.

DPS Lottery for 5th Grade Families

As we approach the spring semester, we want to make sure our Glenn 5th graders have all of the necessary information to best prepare for middle school.  All DPS middle and high schools will undergo the redistricting process in the 2025-26 school year.  You may use this website to find your base middle school by entering your home address.

If your family would like to explore 6th grade magnet school options, the DPS application process opens on January 6th.  Please visit this website to learn more about all of the options in our region.  As a DPS parent myself, I know this information and these processes can be extremely complicated and confusing at times.  With that said, I’m happy to answer any questions you have anytime.  Please feel free to call me or our counselors with questions before the magnet application window closes at the end of January.

Looking ahead to 2025!

Our team is so excited about Glenn’s future in 2025!  Our new state-of-the-art wing will be completed this spring and will be ready for Fall 2026.  We can’t wait to open the new doors to our students and families next year.

If you know any prospective Glenn families, please encourage them to contact me directly or schedule a tour at our website.  With the growing number of options for families, we want the opportunity to share information about the many extracurricular activities and community partnerships that have been added, our academic growth that has exceeded nearly every charter school in Durham, and services that are simply not provided by charter and private schools in the area.  More important than that though, Glenn offers a community of families, students, and teachers that are second to none.  Please spread the word and help us showcase the countless things that make Glenn so special.

Reminder about the bus rotation through January 17th

“Durham Public Schools continues to work diligently to find viable solutions to the bus driver shortage and the challenges it presents. As we do this, we have found it necessary to extend rotational bus service through Friday, January 17, 2025 (rotational bus service initially was to have ended December 20, 2024). Extending rotational bus service will allow the district to maintain consistent transportation for students and provide time to implement any Board-approved actions.”

Mondays in December: Bus #645 will not run

Tuesdays in December: Buses #627 and #643 will not run

Wednesdays in December: Bus #235 will not run

Good evening Glenn families,

It was great to have our students back this week!  In that light, I wanted to thank our entire Glenn community for your amazing work and commitment.  Despite the district’s bus challenges, our parents, family members, teachers and staff, and community members have gone to great lengths to get our students to school.  Our daily attendance rate continues to hit historically high levels - and it’s because of you.  We can’t thank you enough!

3rd - 5th Benchmark Assessments

Our 3rd through 5th grade students will complete important mid-year district assessments over the next few weeks.  The first test is scheduled for Thursday, December 12th.  These assessments are aligned with the End-of-Grade (EOG) tests that will be given in June.  Our students’ results help us determine individual and group strengths and areas for improvement.  Teachers will use student data to inform future lesson plans.  In addition, we will celebrate our students’ progress throughout the year.  Please encourage your students to get some rest, eat a great breakfast, and do their very best!

2nd & 3rd Grades Winter Concert

To our 2nd & 3rd grade families - our 2nd & 3rd graders will host a winter concert on Thursday, December 19th at 5:30 p.m. If your child is performing, they need to be in the gym at 5:10 p.m. for set-up. 5th Grade Survey - Help Needed!

Thank you to all of the 5th grade families that completed the Student Climate survey.  We have had 19 completed forms so far!  When you submit the form, your name will be submitted into a gift card raffle.  More information is provided below.

All DPS 5th, 7th, and 11th graders will be asked to take the annual district survey to tell us how they feel about attending Durham Public Schools. Our students’ participation is extremely helpful for our staff and students.  In fact, DPS leadership looks closely at our participation rates.  We want to know what our students love about Glenn, as well as ways to improve every single student’s experience at school.  If you haven’t filled out the permission form already, please complete the survey link here.

Please call Ms. Vallabhaneni, our Social Worker, if you have questions or concerns. Thank you for your consideration and help!

Food Donations

We’re pleased to share that our annual food bag donations will be available again this year.  Each year, due to significant local donations, Glenn is able to provide groceries to any family who would like some for winter break.  We will pass out many grocery bags in car line and offer food bag pick ups on Tuesday, December 10th (8:00 - 10:00 am) and Wednesday, December 11th (11:00 - 1:00 pm).  Please feel free to visit our school on those days for grocery pick ups.

Good evening Glenn families,

Gratitude & Thanksgiving Break

This week is a short school week. Tuesday is an early release day, as students will dismiss at 12:15 pm. Teachers will complete professional development in the afternoon.

There will be no school Wednesday through Friday, as DPS observes a Thanksgiving break. We hope your families enjoy a restful and fun week.

As we head into our break, our entire team would like to thank you for the privilege of working with your families every day. As we have repeatedly shared over the past four years, we couldn’t ask for a more supportive and caring school community. Your support and partnership has been instrumental in Glenn’s unprecedented progress. Your students are kind, smart, and caring - and we’re so fortunate to work with them every day.

DPS Bus Update

Speaking of gratitude, many of our Glenn parents and staff have gone above and beyond in recent weeks.  One of our buses has not had a driver for many weeks.  As a result, parents and staff have given their time and resources to support other children - in helping with rides to school.  Your efforts have inspired us all.

The DPS bus driving crisis has impacted dozens of schools and thousands of students throughout the district.  District leadership and the Board of Education approved a plan for the month of December.

Families will be responsible for transporting their students to and from school one day each week, with bus service provided four days per week. This approach will help in managing the shortage efficiently, ensuring that our current drivers can cover more routes equitably.

This is a temporary measure as DPS is actively working to resolve transportation issues.

For our school, families whose students ride these buses will be responsible for transporting your children to and from school on the indicated days:

Bus 645: Mondays (December 2, 9, and 16)

Bus 627 and 643: Tuesdays (December 3, 10, and 17)

Bus 235 (both loads): Wednesdays (December 4, 11, and 18)

Please visit DPSNC.net for the complete rotational bus service schedule.

DPS will excuse tardiness for students on late buses and absences for students who miss school due to canceled bus routes.

Please contact me or our team any time with questions.  We will provide more information in the next 48 hours.  Please look out for a letter in your student’s backpack if your child rides a bus.  Our team would like to find a way to help your family get to school on the days DPS does not provide a bus for your child.  Thank you!

With Glenn Pride,

Matt Hunt

Good evening Glenn families,

Cooking and Literacy Nights

Thank you to all of the families that submitted forms for our Cooking and Literacy Nights! Our first Cooking and Literacy Night, Around the Kitchen Table (Round 1), will be held this Thursday, November, 21st.  We are only able to accommodate 18 families at our first event.  Because more than 40 families signed up, we are notifying families if they are attending this Thursday’s event or a later event.  Please look out for a message from Ms. Januzzi.  All families who returned a form, but did not get a space at this Thursday’s event, will be notified to reserve a space for one of the next sessions in January, February or March. Ms. Januzzi will contact you in December to confirm your reservation. Only families who received a reservation confirmation form last week will be able to attend the session this week. Please contact Ms. Januzzi if you have any questions.

5th Grade Families Only - Student Climate Survey

All DPS 5th, 7th, and 11th graders will be asked to take the annual district survey to tell us how they feel about attending Durham Public Schools. Our students’ participation is extremely helpful for our staff and students.  In fact, DPS leadership looks closely at our participation rates.  We want to know what our students love about Glenn, as well as ways to improve every single student’s experience at school.  If you haven’t filled out the permission form already, please complete the survey link here.

Please call Ms. Vallabhaneni, our Social Worker, if you have questions or concerns. Thank you for your consideration and help!

School Picture Make-Up Day - November 20th

This Wednesday, November 20th is school picture make-up day.  Strawbridge Studios will be here for a few hours to take pictures of any new students, students who were absent in October, or anyone who wants a re-take.  Please contact your child’s teacher if you want your child to re-take their picture.

If you would like to purchase student pictures, families may pay online at www.strawbridge.net.  At their website, find the “Order Pictures and Yearbooks” link.  Please use the following online code when ordering: FM456609. If you would prefer a paper order form, please contact me, your child’s teacher, or our front office on Monday.

More for 5th Grade families - DPS Showcase of Schools

We encourage all 5th grade families to attend the DPS Showcase of Schools this Saturday, November 23rd (10 am - 2 pm).  The event will be held at North Carolina Central University’s Student Center (500 Nelson Street).  The event is a great way to learn about all of the middle school options for your student within our region.  Our DPS middle and high schools will be going through the same Growing Together changes experienced at the elementary level last year.  At the event, you’ll learn about all of the middle school changes and ways to apply for various lottery schools and programs.  If you attend, please visit our Glenn table so we can help you with any questions you have for your future 6th graders!  Please see this link for more information.

A message from DPS - Student Climate Survey

All DPS 5th, 7th, and 11th graders will be asked to take the annual district survey to tell us how they feel about attending Durham Public Schools. It's called a Climate Survey and we administer it every year. We want to know what makes them feel good or proud to be a DPS student, and if there are things we need to improve so that they can feel good about learning in DPS. We would appreciate your consent using the Google form that you should have received via email. It will be administered between Thursday, November 14 and Friday January 31.

Please call Ms. Vallabhaneni, our Social Worker, if you have questions or concerns. Thank you for your consideration.

Bus Driver Shortage and Edulog

We sincerely apologize for the DPS bus driver shortage that has impacted certain routes.  As a DPS parent myself, I share your frustration and concerns.  Our Glenn families have done an exceptional job this year - helping us to achieve the highest attendance rate in recent memory despite the bus challenges.  We understand that this challenge has impacted childcare needs, family jobs, and ultimately our students’ education.  At Glenn, we’re working to inform families as soon as possible about bus changes daily.  That said, we encourage all families to sign up for the Edulog app, as it informs families when DPS Transportation knows about a change.  Please contact Ms. Garcia, our family liaison, if you need help setting up the app.

October 27, 2024

Good evening Glenn families,

Thank You!

Every week, I’m amazed by the wonderful moments and commitment of our students, staff, and families.  Just last week, we celebrated the induction of this year’s We are Kings and We are Queens students.  Hundreds of family members and students attended our Hispanic Heritage Month Celebration.  Thank you to all of the students and family members who performed and provided food samples.  We closed the week with our Superintendent, Board of Education, County Commissioners, and elected officials at a groundbreaking ceremony for our new building.  Several guests asked us how our students’ work could be replicated at other schools.  I feel so fortunate to be a part of such an incredible school community.

Kindergarten/1st Grade Singing Games Night

Kindergarten and 1st grade families and friends are invited to participate in the Kindergarten and 1st Grade Singing Games Night in the gym on Thursday, November 14th (5:30 - 6:15 pm). Cookies and refreshments will be served in the cafeteria after the singing games.

Please come sing, move, and play with your child as you experience music games played during music class. This is an active night where students will teach their families the music activities they enjoy in class. Please dress in comfortable clothes appropriate for movement.  Join us in the gym for music, movement, and fun!

Common District Assessments for 3rd - 5th graders

All 3rd - 5th graders are taking Common District Assessments (CDAs) this week.  The CDAs are district assessments that feature the major academic standards from the first quarter.  Please feel free to ask your child’s teacher about CDA results during family-teacher conferences.

Report Cards and Family-Teacher Conferences

First quarter report cards will be distributed via Thursday folders this week.  Report cards are simply a snapshot of a student’s first quarter work with certain academic standards.  Students receive scores based on standards-based assessments.  Grades can fluctuate throughout the year based on a student’s progress.  We encourage all families to schedule a family-teacher conference in November to discuss the report and ways to partner at home.  Please feel free to reach out directly to your child’s teacher if you want to schedule an in-person or virtual conference.  Spanish interpretation services will be provided by our team between November 4th and 15th.

School Visits, Birthdays, and Field Trips

We’ve received several questions from families lately about field trips and visits.  Because safety is always our top priority, Durham Public Schools has many procedures in place for participation.  In order to volunteer on field trips, family members must complete the steps at the DPS website.  Families are not able to visit classrooms during the day unless teachers and administrators receive advanced notice.  Our teachers are happy to schedule meetings and calls during their planning time or outside of the instructional day.  Finally, we encourage you to notify your child’s teacher well in advance if you want to celebrate your child’s birthday.  The DPS Wellness Policy requires us to limit classroom birthday parties to once each month.  Thank you for helping us to adhere to these safety policies.  Feel free to call your child’s teacher or me with questions.

DPS Growing Together Message for 5th Grade Families

The DPS Growing Together student reassignment plan will bring changes to our secondary schools next Fall, including our middle and high schools. To 5th grade families - you may learn more about the changes slated for your region and meet your new principals at the scheduled Regional Information Sessions. Help with 2025-26 Student Recruitment

We would love your help with spreading the word about Glenn!  Our team is working hard to grow our student enrollment in upcoming years.  If you know a family that is considering Kindergarten options for next year - or may be at a local charter school and interested in making a move to public schools, please encourage them to reach out to us for a tour.  In addition, we’d love to see families at this year’s Durham Public Schools Showcase of Schools on November 23rd at North Carolina Central University.  We’ll provide more information soon.

We need your help, as our student numbers drive staffing, funding, programs, and more.  I firmly believe we have the best teaching staff in Durham and we’re fighting to maintain that for our current and future Glenn Lions.  With our new building scheduled to be completed over the next few years, our facilities will be second to none.  And, we’re so proud of our students for their growth over the past three years.

Did you know?

At Glenn, we strive to provide an experience we would want for our own families - because all 467 Glenn Lions deserve that!  Please help us spread the word and encourage prospective families to reach out to me and our team.

Good evening Glenn families,

Congratulations, Ms. Edwards!

We’re so excited to share that Ms. Edwards, one of our outstanding 3rd grade teachers, was named the Durham Public Schools teacher of the month!  Out of 2,500 teachers in Durham, Ms. Edwards was honored because of her unwavering commitment to students and families.  Last year, her class had one of the highest proficiency rates in all of Durham, as measured by the End-of-Grade math test.  While she is an amazing teacher, she’s a better person.

With Ms. Edwards recent honor, I’m proud to share that Glenn’s staff has earned more DPS teaching awards than any other school over the past two years!  We have the very best teaching staff in the city!

Thank you, families!

Thank you to every Glenn family that attended last week’s curriculum night!  I hope you found the evening helpful.  To all families, please reach out to your child’s teacher any time with questions about resources, academic standards, or ways to partner at home.  We hope to see all of our families at our next family event.  Our annual Hispanic Heritage Celebration is scheduled for Thursday, October 24th.

Progress Reports and Thursday Folders

1st quarter progress reports will be distributed via Thursday folders this week (October 3rd).  Progress reports are designed to help families learn about student strengths and areas for growth.  Upon reviewing your child’s progress report, please reach out to your child’s teacher anytime.  After 1st quarter report cards are distributed at the end of October, we will offer teacher-family conferences in November.  We’ll provide more information soon.

K-5 Curriculum Night - Thursday, September 26th

On Thursday, September 26th, we will host our annual Kindergarten - 5th Grade Curriculum Night for all families.  Our doors will be open from 5:30 to 7:00 pm. Families will meet with their child’s grade level teachers to learn about the year’s curriculum, homework expectations, academic resources, assessments, grading policies, and ways to partner with teachers at home.  There will be two (25 minute) sessions. One held at 5:40 pm and the next at 6:25 pm. Each grade level session will run twice in case your family has several students at different grade levels.  Each session will be conducted in both English and Spanish. There will be childcare offered for families with children 4 and under. We look forward to seeing you there!

Hispanic Heritage Month

September 15th through October 15th marks National Hispanic Heritage Month. Since arriving at Glenn Elementary three years ago, I have had countless conversations with students and staff members who have highlighted the unique diversity of the Glenn community.  We are so fortunate to have students and families who represent nearly two dozen countries, including Mexico, Honduras, El Salvador, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Dominican Republic, Peru, Ecuador, Venezuela, Colombia, Costa Rica, Puerto Rico, Egypt, Syria, Afghanistan, Jamaica, Vietnam, Ghana, and more

Throughout the next month and beyond, we will connect to literature, history, and cultures that celebrate our Latinx community.  We’ll showcase our students’ work in a variety of ways over the next month. Our school's diversity and students' experiences make us smarter, creative, more understanding, kinder, and more capable to realize our dreams in the world beyond Glenn Elementary School.

To celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month and our students’ work, we will host a celebration for families on October 24th.  We will provide more details in the coming weeks.

Attendance Awareness Month

Thank you!  Last week, our school attendance rate was 94% - meaning that just 27 of the our 450 students missed school each day.  This has a huge impact on our positive classroom culture and our students’ levels of happiness at school.

Between October 7th and October 31st, Durham Public Schools will launch an Attendance Campaign across the district.  At Glenn, our goal will be to achieve the highest attendance jump in all of Durham (from last year to this year).  We also hope to exceed state and national averages for the year - and substantially decrease the number of chronically absent students.  To our parents and guardians, we can’t thank you enough for your help!

Glenn’s Family Handbook

Our Glenn family handbooks are listed below.  The handbook includes information about arrival, dismissal, attendance, field trips, social media, partnerships, and much more.  At Glenn, we strive to form the strongest family partnerships possible, as we work to be the best possible school community for every child and family.  Every year, we set school goals around school culture, family engagement, and student achievement.  Throughout the year, you’ll hear more about our school goals, progress, and celebrations around student attendance, school climate surveys, and family-teacher conferences.  Thank you for all you do to cultivate a safe, loving, and engaging school community!

September 23rd - Teacher Workday

Please mark your calendars!  Students do not have school on Monday, September 23rd, as it is a district-wide teacher workday.

Message from DPS: Title I & Family Engagement Nominations 2024-2025

The Durham Public Schools Title I & Family Engagement PAC Steering Committee is accepting nominations for parents/guardians at every school to join the Family Engagement Team. Through the Title I & Family Engagement PAC Steering Committee, parents will have the opportunity to provide insight into planning district family engagement initiatives, share experiences, and provide recommendations to help improve family engagement programming across the district. Parents will also have the opportunity to develop and build relationships with other parents and community leaders.  If you would like to nominate yourself or another family, please email Ms. Kate Hanlon at kate.hanlon@dpsnc.net.

Message from DPS Superintendent Dr. Lewis

Last week, Superintendent Dr. Anthony Lewis shared a message of assurance regarding safety and security protocols with all DPS families.  While our Glenn community has not experienced these challenges this year, various local, state, and national threats have impacted (several Triangle area) schools.  As a DPS parent myself, I understand that our students’ safety must always remain our top priority.  In that light, our district’s message is listed below.

Message from DPS for all schools

“(In DPS), please know that no threat goes unattended, and credible threats warrant consequences for those who make them. Those consequences are outlined in our Student Code of Conduct.

We know that threatening situations may be unsettling for our students. Our school counselors are always available to support any student who may be feeling anxious or need to express their thoughts or concerns.

Not only do we use the See Something, Say Something anonymous tip resource which is available on the DPSNC.net homepage, but as Dr. Lewis stated, we want every student to have an adult with whom they feel comfortable enough to share their concerns or fears. We know that positive relationships promote positive communication.

Please know that we will continue to utilize our safety protocols and precautions. Thank you for your continued support and trust.

With Glenn Pride,

Matt Hunt

September 12, 2024

Good afternoon Glenn families.  This is principal Matt Hunt calling with a quick update.  Today, our school conducted the first lockdown drill of the year.  Our students did a tremendous job throughout the entire drill.  Thank you for helping our students understand the importance of following teachers’ directions during all safety drills.

On another note, please look out for my Sunday call which will highlight some outstanding student attendance news and information about our upcoming curriculum night.

Thank you for listening!

September 8, 2024

Good evening Glenn families,

Thank you to all of our students for a fantastic second week of school!

Glenn Celebrates Again!

Last week, the state released performance grades for all NC schools. I’m so proud to report that Glenn increased its school performance grade for the third consecutive year - earning the school’s highest grade in Glenn’s history. Our high growth index places us in the top 30% of the state for three consecutive years. While letter grades and growth don’t define schools, we’re pleased to share that Glenn has achieved more academic progress (since pre-Covid) than nearly every school in Durham.  I’m so fortunate to work alongside the best teachers in the city and serve the most caring and committed families around.

Our Attendance Goals

In order to achieve academic success, students must be in school and engaged every day.  All families received an attendance contract in Thursday folders last week. We are working to reduce the number of chronically absent students at Glenn. Students are considered chronically absent when they miss 18 school days in a year (or 10% of the total days). 18 missed school days equates to 120 hours of missed instruction.  Research shows that students who are chronically absent fall behind academically, are less likely to enjoy school, and less likely to graduate from high school and college.  Our Social Worker, Ms. Vallabhaneni, and Student Support Team have developed systems and student incentives to get our students excited about achieving attendance goals.  To our families, please contact us anytime if there are barriers to getting your child to school every day.  We’re here to help!

Arrival Reminders

Thank you to all of our carpool families, as your help has allowed us to cut dismissal times significantly.  We have several morning reminders to help maintain safety and efficiency:

Compliment Cards

This year, we have introduced compliment cards across the school.  Please ask your child how their class has earned cards to date.  Our classes earn compliment cards by showing PRIDE (promoting kindness, respect, integrity, determination, and excellence) in the hallways, cafeteria, and at recess.  Classes can earn community prizes like classroom hat days, popcorn parties, pajama day, movie days, and more.

Panorama Social-Emotional Survey for All DPS Students

DPS administers several student and family surveys each year. These surveys help schools identify strengths and areas for improvement. Kindergarten through 3rd grade families must “opt in” to allow your child to take the survey. All families received a link to the opt-in form in emails on September 5, and through Talking Points on September 6. We would greatly appreciate it if you would opt in, as it will help us with our process to cultivate the best possible environment for your child.  Thank you!

Student Safety Drills

Our students’ safety is always our top priority. As a result, we conduct periodic required safety drills (monthly fire drills, annual earthquake and tornado drills, and semi-annual lockdown drills).  This week, we will complete our first lockdown safety drill.  A DPS security team facilitates the drill and our trained teachers lead our students through the required procedures. Thank you to all of our students and families, as our students have always completed our drills in a safe and responsible way.

Good evening Glenn families,

Thank you for an incredible first week of school! I wish our entire community could witness the greatness that is taking place in our classrooms already. Our students have shown kindness, hard work, and joy.  Our entire team is so happy to be back at school with our students.  And, a special congratulations to all of our new Kindergarten Lions for completing their very first day of school!

A Transportation Thank You to Families

Thank you to all of our carpool families for your patience.  The dismissal time has decreased every day as our students continue to learn the processes.  We’re hoping to improve our dismissal times more and more each week.

We would like to offer our sincerest apologies for the bus challenges we’re experiencing in the afternoons.  Our team has shared our concerns with DPS transportation and we’re hopeful that operations move in a more timely manner soon.  We’ll continue to provide updates.

No School on Monday

There will be no school on Monday, September 2nd due to the Labor Day holiday. We’re looking forward to seeing our students again on Tuesday.

Bell Schedule Reminders

Here are a few important reminders about our daily schedule:

Beginning of the Year (BOY) Assessments

All 3rd grade families received a letter this week regarding next week’s BOG assessment.  This state-mandated assessment measures literacy strengths and helps our teachers inform instruction the rest of the year.  The assessment is scheduled for Thursday, September 3rd.

In all grades, students will complete i-Ready and mCLASS assessments to identify individual strengths and areas for growth.  The assessment window will run from September 3rd to October 1st.  Attendance is always critical, but especially on testing days.  Teachers use this information to drive their instruction and decision making for student acceleration and intervention. Feel free to ask your student’s teacher about the outcomes of these assessments and ways you can support your child at home.

Thursday Folders

Every Thursday, our teachers will send Thursday Communication Folders home.  The folders will include weekly newsletters, student work, school-wide event information, and much more.

Please call us anytime with questions - and look out for more information with my weekly calls, our website, Twitter (@GlennPride), and Instagram (@GlennESPride).

Good afternoon Glenn families,

On behalf of our entire Glenn team, thank you to every student and family member who attended last week’s Open House events.  It was wonderful to see so many returning students - and to meet many who are new to the Glenn community.

As always, we hope you find that our teachers and staff work to over-communicate with you this year.  Please reach out to us anytime with questions or needs.  Listed below are some key reminders about our first day of school.

Important reminders about the first day of school

School times: our doors open to students at 7:15 am daily.  Students should arrive anytime between 7:15 and 7:45 am, as our school day officially begins at 7:45 am.  The school day ends at 2:15 pm.

Car Riders: Cars may enter campus using the service road next to our old main entrance and drive to the back of the building.  Glenn team members will help your child get out of their cars safely and get them to the correct classroom.  Please display your carpool tag on your dashboard whenever you pick up your child from Glenn.

Bus Riders: During the first week, buses may be off schedule in the morning and afternoon.  We recommend that students are at their morning stops 10 minutes early during the first week.  In the afternoons, we send information via Talking Points if there are bus delays.  Families are encouraged to create their Edulog accounts in order to track your child’s bus.  If you need help, please call our front office at (919) 560-3920.

Daily Transportation Changes and Early Dismissals

Please call our front office before 12:00 pm if you ever need to make a transportation change for the day.  You must call our front office if an adult not listed in PowerSchool is scheduled to pick up your child.  Students may not be dismissed early between 1:45 and 2:15 pm, as our staff works to safely dismiss the entire school.

Student Backpacks: We encourage all families to include the following information in or on your child’s backpack: student’s name, grade, guardian’s name, phone number, transportation information (bus or car), and sibling names if they attend Glenn.

Water Bottles: - Please send a water bottle with your child daily during the first week of school.  Students will eventually receive a Glenn water bottle they may keep at school.

Breakfast and Lunch: all students will receive free breakfast and lunch daily.

School Supplies: we have a large and supportive student services team who is ready to help with key information, school supplies, and any other need you may have in the next few weeks. If your family would like assistance with the grade-specific supplies, please call our front office (919.560.3920) and ask for Ms. Vallabhaneni (Social Worker) or Michelle Herrera-Garcia (Family Liaison).
