Skyward - Elementary Report Card Grade Input

Audience:
Elementary teachers who need to enter grades for the elementary report card.

Goal:  To access the grade input screens, enter grades and comments

Short Description:

Step 1:  Log into Skyward

Step 2:  Click “Teacher Access” and select “My Gradebook

Step 3:  Select the “Standards Gradebook” for the course you want to grade

Step 4:  Click the “Subject” heading you want to enter grades for, enter the grades, and click “Save”.

Step 5:  From the gradebook, click “Comments” → “Post Comments” for the appropriate trimester
Step 6:  Let the building secretary know you’re done and that they can be printed.

Deep Dive:

Step 3:  Select the “Standards Gradebook” for the course you want to grade

Step 4:  Click the “Subject” heading you want to enter grades for, enter the grades, and click “Save”.

** Special Note - the BLUE, ORANGE (Independent Reading), and PINK (Sight Words) Trimester 1 “Subject” grades are the ONLY grades required to be entered in the Gradebook for report cards during Trimester 1.

** Special Note - IGNORE the YELLOW and GREEN subjects and skills - they are for Trimesters 2 and 3.

** Special Note - the VIOLET (Habits of a Learner) section and the CONCEPT AREAS (Art, Music, etc.) are the only sections where you will have to enter skill grades instead of the subject grades.  The “Habits of a Learner” skills are accessible through the GRADE courses (e.g., 3GRADE/3A, KGRADE/KB, 5GRADE/5C, etc.)

** Special Tip - you can use “Display Options” to show/hide different gradebook features.  You can also use the “plus” and “minus” boxes to expand and collapse subjects.

Grade Entry

You can enter grades student-by-student, or mass assign the same grade to all students.

** Remember to click “Save” when finished. **

If you are actively using Skyward’s gradebook, your Events/Assignments will be scored, and the Skill grades will automatically be trend-graded (must have a minimum of four graded Events/Assignments).

Step 5A:
Use this option to enter comments “by class”.  From the gradebook, click “Comments” → “Post Comments” for the appropriate trimester.  “By class” entry does not have a drop-down menu.  It is helpful to print the “Comment Code” list when entering comments this way. It has been added to the end of this document.

** Remember to click “Save” when finished. **

Step 5B:  Use this option to enter comments “by student”.  Click on the student’s name → “Comments” tab → “Edit Comments”.

Select the comments from the drop-down menu.
”By Student” is the only comment entry process that will show the full comment (not the code) in the drop-down menu.

** Remember to click “Save” when finished. **

Final Notes:

Grade Period Display

On December 1st, the Skyward gradebook will automatically change over to Trimester 2.  In order to enter grades into Trimester 1, you will need to make sure that the Trimester 1 Grade Period is displayed.

To do that, click “Display Options” → “Grade Period Display”.  Make sure to check the box next to Trimester 1.

Grade Changes

The grading window closes on December 7th.  If you need to change a grade between the closing of the window and the printing of the report cards, you will need to do the following:

  1. Select the Standards Gradebook containing the grade that needs to be changed.
  2. Click “Posting Status” and select the appropriate Trimester.
  3. Click the “Request Grade Changes” button.  You will have two hours to make any changes.
  4. Make your changes and provide a reason for each change.  After you enter the reason, click “Yes”.Grade change requests will be approved or denied by the building principal or his or her designee.  When the change is approved, it will automatically be updated in the gradebook.

** Special Note - The specifics of the “Grade Change” instructions may be slightly different.  I’ll update this guide once I see the specific menus for the first time.

Preview Report Cards
To preview an individual student’s report card, click on the student from your gradebook, click “Reports” → “Custom Report Card”.  Elementary students will be assigned a report card by grade level, so the default template should be fine.  Click “Print” to send the report card to your Skyward print queue, where you can view it.
