LO 8.1.2.D
Learning Objective: Describe how to improve the veracity of data.
Review
Veracity refers to the trustworthiness and integrity of data.
When the veracity of a dataset cannot be guaranteed, significant issues arise that may create disparities between who can afford or have access to new technologies (smartphones, tablets, internet) and who cannot. The negative effect is that some individuals or groups might accidentally be accorded more visibility and thus be favoured, or discriminated against, at the expense of those less visible.
To improve the veracity of data, central and local authorities, along with the corporate community, must close the so-called "digital divide." Furthermore, commercial enterprises can complement digital data collection with data collected in a more traditional way.
