Introduction to Cells

3.1.1 What is a cell?

 

From a biological perspective, a cell is the basic unit of life in all living organisms. According to the cell theory, cells are: found in all living organisms; the basic unit of structure and function; arise from pre-existing cells. This theory, a synthesis of work done by several scientists, forms the foundation of cell biology.
