 YOUNG CHILD SEMESTER ONE

 Week 2

Music is everywhere!”   Through our play in class today we also used our listening skills to develop:

  1. Sound awareness: “Move and Freeze” Listening Dance(listening for music to stop and start and matching our body movements - also a home activity suggestion this week)
  2. My Voice” Echo (Exploring the different ways to use our voice: Whispering, Speaking, Singing, and yes - Shouting)
  3. 1-2 Tie My Shoe” Game (Hearing and Recognizing the differences between Singing vs. Speaking voices.
  4. Instrument “Dynamic exploration (e.g. piano and forte on the cymbal and drum, with ensemble movement).

Sounds surround us in our daily lives. It is only through intentional listening, focusing on specific sounds, that we can become “tuned in” to the complexities of sound. Your Home Activity this week will take us to the next step!

 HOME ACTIVITY SUGGESTIONS

1) Music At Home Card 2 "Be a Sound Investigator"

Last week we asked children to discover "music usually not heard."  This week we are asking children to discover what "sounds in the home", of which they have not generally been aware of until now!  We are continuing to foster your child’s LISTENING SKILLS at home this week, as you spend a few minutes each day discovering things laying around the house and figuring out if they "make a sound."

2) Move and Freeze Cued Movement Activity

Move & Freeze is an activity that challenges your child to stop moving in response to a cue which is a fantastic way to promote listening, ensemble and self-discipline through play. What will you carry that makes noise? Bells, something else. . .? Play this on your CD and enjoy this musical game at home this week.

3) Listen Listen Listen to Your Class Music! This is important for their class participation, focus, and comfort level.

4) Color in your Song Book

HELPFUL HINT:  The more consistent your "play time" together, the easier it is to develop a playful routine together!  For example, we have found that families who set a regular time each day to play together for 10 minutes like: before breakfast, after breakfast, first thing when child comes home from school, or before dinner have found great success with joyful participation of their children.  Call it a HANDFUL! 5x a week set aside 10 minutes of fun and learning with your child as you PLAY together.  ENJOY and watch the benefits grow!

Listening to the CD can bring on many playful moments in the car and in the home!  ENJOY!
