BOFURIN (ボウフウリン)

ボウフウリン can be written as 防風林, are group of trees planted for protection. All characters that have enrolled in Furin High have the radical 木 in their surname while all Bofurin members have a tree/flower name in their surnames . (I guess that’s the only entry requirement of Furin High)

Year 1

Sakura Haruka (桜 遥)

Sakura (桜) – Cherry Blossom, the symbol of rebirth in Japan

Haruka (遥)  – Far and Distant, beyond reach

* Haruka can also be written as spring (はる、春) and fragrance(か、香)

Analysis: Sakura will be the one to rebirth(?) Bofurin after Noroshi burnt it down, reaching a height that no one ever did in the Bofurin history
* The rebirth might mean conquering the Noroshi (shadows of Bofurin), which is what Umemiya and his four heavenly kings failed to do

Suo Hayato (蘇枋 隼飛)

Su (蘇) – sappanwood, a wood that can be made into medicine used to improve blood circulation, treat wounds, and alleviate pain
         It also symbolizes revival, resurrection

O (枋) – sappanwood or a tough wooden plank that can be used for crafting, maybe symbolizing the bridge of communication between other characters?

Suo (蘇枋) – Sappanwood (Suo no ki/蘇芳の木), a deciduous shrub of the legume family (ie a small shrub that loses all its leaves in winter), or
Chinese redbud(hanazuo/花蘇芳), symbolizing family harmony, can be used as treatment for fever (
No wonder why Sakura recovered after Suo visited him)

Hayato (隼) – Falcon, a symbol of nobility (high status + wealth) in Japan, also symbolizes bravery, power and vision, is an icon of pursuit and movement, heading toward success (Falcon in other cultures also symbolizes freedom, which might have something to do with Suo’s dream – the liberation of slaves)

To (飛) – Fly or Flight

Hayato (隼飛) – Flying Falco

Analysis: Most likely the key to the success of Sakura or Bofurin’s rebirth, if Sakura became the leader of Bofurin, Suo would most likely be his right-hand, just like Hiiragi and Umemiya

* Although Chinese redbud symbolizes harmony between brothers in Chinese culture, it also symbolizes betrayal/death due to betrayal in the Bible
* Unlike other characters, Suo’s name contains more than one species of tree, would this be a hint of him having more than one identity, hence the
traitor theory?

Nirei Akihiko (楡井 秋彦)

Nire (楡) – Elm tree, a type of tree known for their robustness and ability to withstand harsh conditions (might mean Nirei have strong endurance and perseverance)

I (井) – Water well, historically crucial for providing access to clean water that can be used for purification

Nirei (楡井) – A well made of Elm wood, a durable source of clean water

Aki (秋) – Autumn, symbolizes freshness and new endeavors in Japanese culture

Hiko (彦) – A talented individual or prince (referring to his talent of being a walking database?)

Akihiko (秋彦) – resilient(?) and talented individual

Analysis: Sakura’s prince and sturdy source of purification (ch 146), Nirei will always be there to purify Sakura’s heart

* Suo + Nirei = A sturdy plank, can be used to build a bridge, might be symbolizing the bridge of communication between Sakura and the others

Sugishita Kyotaro (杉下 京太郎)

Sugi (杉) – Japanese Cedar, a very tall tree that symbolizes endurance and sacredness
* Umemiya once commented on how robust Sugishita is
* The sacredness might refer to his strong belief in Umemiya
* Japanese Cedar are also really tall, hence his height (~192cm / 6”3’)

Shita (下) – below/down, possibly referring to the fact that he will always be under someone

Sugishita (杉下) – Below a Japanese Cedar, Japanese Cedar and commonly planted around temples and shrines to protect visitors from the heat of the sun

Kyo (京) – Capital (ie Kyoto)

Taro (太郎) – A common suffix name for the eldest son (Sugishita might have younger siblings)

Kyotaro (京太郎) – The capital and eldest among his siblings (if he has any), or maybe simply Umemiya’s no.1 follower? (because all characters in his given name have the meaning “first or rank no.1”) (I’m out of ideas)

Analysis: The “hottest” danger Bofurin faces are Takiishi and Endo whose names were emphasized with fire. Sugishita might be the one to shield Sakura or Bofurin from their heat in some way.

Kiryu Mitsuki (桐生 三輝)

Kiri (桐) - paulownia tree, nicknamed “The tree of life” or “princess tree”, the flowers of this tree are also a symbol used by the royal family of Japan nowadays

* According to Japanese customs, paulownia trees are planted when a couple have a daughter

Yu (生) – To live

Kiryu (桐生) – the paulownia tree lives (?)

* Kiryu was the surname of a noble family that used to exist in Japan, their main bloodline died out so the Kiryu clan no longer exists nowadays.

Mi (三) – Three (might indicate that he has two older siblings)

Tsuki (輝) – Radiance/Brightness

Mitsuki (三輝) – Three brightness (I don’t know how to interpret this)

Tsugeura taiga (柘浦 大河)

Tsuge (柘) – boxwood tree, boxwood bonsai represents strength, stability, and longevity

Ura (浦) – inlet, bay, same pronunciation as the kanji 裏(meaning back; behind; other side)

Tsugeura (柘浦) – a bay of boxwood tree, might be symbolizing his longevity and strength (This counters Sakura’s comment “He’s gonna be the first to die”)

Tai (大) – Big, Great

Ga (河) – Large size river

Taiga (大河) – XL river

Analysis: The kanji is also commonly used in a Japanese phrase 裏切り者, meaning traitor, Suo’s flower language have a symbolism of betrayal, Tsugeura’s backstory is somehow related to Suo’s, Tsugeura might have something to do with the traitor theory

Anzai Masaki (杏西 雅紀)

An (杏) - Apricot, symbolized “timid love”, “maiden’s shyness”, “doubt”, “suspicion” and “modesty”

Zai(西) - West, in Japanese dictionaries, its definition is “the direction where the sun sets”

Anzai(杏西) - the apricot tree in the west

Masa(雅) - refined and elegant

Ki(紀) - chronicle, geologic period, history

Masaki(雅紀) - refined and elegant chronicle/history

Analysis: Although the apricot tree has flower language that makes Anzai look like a traitor, I think it is referring to Anzai’s behaviour in the Keel arc

Kakiuchi Yuri (柿内 侑凛)

Kaki(柿) - Permission, symbolized beauty of nature, kindness, blessing

Uchi(内) - inside

Kakiuchi(柿内) - the inside of the permission tree

Yu(侑) - to assist, to help, represents a person who is supportive, considerate and always ready to help

Ri(凛) - cold weather, serious person

Yuri(侑凛) - a person who is supportive but serious at the same time?

Takanashi Tsukasa (高梨 司)

Taka(高) - tall, expensive, loud, noble

Nashi(梨) - Pear tree, symbolized gentle/peaceful love, love, loving everyone

Takanashi(高梨) - tall/expensive pear tree

Tsukasa(司) - government office, official, official position

Kurita Junpei (栗田 順平)

Kuri(栗) - Chestnut, symbolized luxury, satisfaction, sincerity, state of rich happiness

ta(田) - rice field, rice paddy

Kurita(栗田) - chestnut tree + rice field

Jun(順) - the arrangement of things, to be honest/to be obedient

Pei(平) - flat, peace

Junpei(順平) - peaceful arrangement of things?

Azusawa Motoki (梓沢 基希)

* Grade captain of class 1-2 (Jikoku team/Tsubaki’s team)

Azu(梓) - Japanese cherry birch, symbolized “pure heart”, but some said it doesn’t have a flower language

Sawa(沢) - swamp, valley

Azusawa(梓沢) - swamp/valley of Japanese cherry birch

Moto(基) - reason

Ki(希) - rare

Motoki(基希) - rare reason

Kuwada Yuushin (桑田 勇信)

* Vice-grade captain of class 1-2 (Jikoku Team/Tsubaki’s team)

* The kanji of his given name was provided in the 5th anniversary merch, but the reading was not given. I'll use the most common reading for now.

Kuwa (桑) - Morus in general have a meaning of "I love everything about her"  "let's die together" which is a reference from Pyramus and Thisbe in Greek mythology
White Kuwa berries: Wisdom
Black Kuwa berries: "I won't help you", "I will out live you"

Da (田) - origin, base

Kuwada (桑田) - rice field, rice paddy

Yu (勇) - courage, bravery, heroism

Shin (信) - faith, truth, trust

Kiyama Miyato (杞山 湊斗)

* Vice-grade captain of class 1-2 (Jikoku Team/Tsubaki’s team)

* The kanji of his given name was provided in the 5th anniversary merch, but the reading was not given. I'll use the most common reading for now.

Ki () - horse chestnut, symbolized luxury and health

Yama () - mountain

Kiyama (杞山) - mountain of horse chestnuts

Miya (湊) - port, harbour

To (斗) - big dipper, a measurement unit for dry grain, 1斗 ≈ 18L (In Simplified Chinese, 斗 also means to fight or struggle)

 Yuzuriha Izumi (杠 和泉)

* Grade captain of class 1-3 (Zojo team/Momose’s team)

Yuzuriha (杠) - Daphniphyllum macropodum have a flower language of “Rejuvenation”, “Change of generations” and “transfer”

Izumi (和泉) - 和 means soft, calm, peaceful, harmony; 泉 refers to a place where water springs up from underground

Momijikawa Sakae (楓川 栄)

* From class 1-3, under Momose(Zojo Team)’s team

Momiji (楓) - Maple tree have a flower language of "precious memories", "beautiful change", "moderation", "self-control" and "restraint"

Kawa () - river, stream

Momijikawa(楓川) - river/stream of maple tree

Sakae (栄) - glory, honor, to flourish

Analysis: Momijikawa could be bringing/reminding Sakura and the others what his flower means - precious memories and beautiful changes

His family might have given him the name “Sakae” because he’s their glory and honor

 Kunugi Kiyomasa (椚 清正)

* Grade captain of class 1-4 (Komoku team/Mizuki’s team)

Kunugi () - The sawtooth oak have a flower language of "let's forget each other", "sincerity" and "letting go of the past"

Kiyo () - clear, neat, pure, righteous

Masa () - certain and correct

Rinoie Tatsumi (李家 辰巳)

* Vice-grade captain of class 1-4 (Komoku team/Mizuki’s team)

* The kanji of his given name was provided in the 5th anniversary merch, but the reading was not given. I'll use the most common reading for now.

Rino(李) - Plum (the fruit, not plum blossom) have a flower language of “loyalty”, “chastity”, “independence”, “suspicion” ,”sweet life”, “misunderstanding” and “difficulty”

Ie(家) - Home, family

Rinoie(李家) - This surname was said to be originated from the Li/Lee(李) Clan of Korea who chose to settle in Japan.

* When first introduced in the manga, his name was mentioned as Kiba (季羽/きば), which was weird enough to not have a wood radical in his name. Maybe because of this, they changed his name to Rinoie(李家) in the print version and in the merch.

Tatsumi (辰巳) - The reading of his name was not given, but Tatsumi was the most common reading. Tatsu(辰) is the sign of the dragon in both Japanese and Chinese culture, while Mi(巳) is the sign of the snake or serpent. When put together, Tatsumi means Southeast.

Yui Gonsuke(柚井 権介)

* Vice-grade captain of class 1-4 (Komoku team/Mizuki’s team)

* The kanji of his given name was provided in the 5th anniversary merch, but the reading was not given. I'll use the most common reading for now.

Yu () - 柚(Yu), yuzu the citrus fruit has a flower language of "healthy beauty," "innocent person," and "sigh of love."

I () - Water well, historically crucial for providing access to clean water that can be used for purification

Yui (柚井) - yuzu water well

Gon (権) - authority, power, rights

Suke (介) - jammed in, mediate, concern onself with

Gonsuke (権介) - jammed in / concern oneself with authority or power


Year 2

Kaji Ren (梶 蓮)

Kaji (梶) – ancient name for paper mulberry in Japanese, material for making rudder/helm (part of a boat used for steering, symbolizes guidance, direction and control)

Ren (蓮) – lotus, symbolizing purity and enlightenment, It grows in muddy water but remains unstained, representing the ability to rise above adversity and achieve spiritual enlightenment.
Other Flower languages of lotus flower: “trust”, “Save me” and “faded love”

Analysis: Kaji is Sakura’s guidance (ch.46 and talk with Sakura after KEEL fight)

Sakura seems to mirror Kaji’s path. The format of their name is also similar, both their first and last names only contain one kanji and their first and last names have the same number of hiragana characters.
* Kaji tried his best to retain his humanity despite being a natural-born beast. I think this is symbolized by his name Ren

Kusumi Yuto (楠見 結斗)

Kusu (楠) - Camphor Tree, known as tree of medicine, medicine made out of it has pain-relieving and anti-inflammatory properties, therefore is a symbol of healing

Mi (見) - to see or to look

Kusumi (楠見) – seeing the camphor tree

Yu (結) – to combine, to end, to connect

To (斗) - big dipper, a measurement unit for dry grain, 1斗 ≈ 18L

Yuto (結斗) – to combine/connect/end a big dipper?

Analysis: Judging by the name, Kusumi exists to heal someone (might be referring to him always being the one to comfort other people or he will help Kaji heal his past trauma?)

Enomoto Takeshi (榎本 健史)

Eno (榎) – enoki tree or Japanese hackberry, symbolizing longevity and resilience, its flower language is “coexistance” (since he is Kaji’s vice and close friend, might be hinting that he will help Kaji coexist with his beast side)

Moto (本) – Origin/source, main/real

Enomoto (榎本) – origin of enoki tree

Take (健) - healthy, health, strength, persistence

Shi (史) - history; chronicle

Takeshi (健史) – healthy history

Shiina Wataru (椎名 航)

* Grade captain of class 2-2 (Jikoku team/Tsubaki’s team)

Shii(椎) - chinquapin, doesn’t have a clear flower language

Na(名) - name

Shiina(椎名) - the kanji itself doesn’t hold any special meaning and is a common surname in Japan. However when used without the kanji, it could mean “something that had no value”

* Shiina is the surname of a samurai clan in Japan

Wataru(航) - to cross the water/air


Year 3

Umemiya Hajime (梅宮 一)

Ume (梅) – Plum blossom, associated with resilience and perseverance,  due to their ability to bloom in the cold of winter, plum blossoms are also a symbol of hope and renewal, signalling the arrival of spring. Plum blossoms are also a reminder that even in the harshest of conditions, life can still flourish

Miya (宮) – shrine, palace or member of the imperial family (symbolism of how he is Tsubakino’s prince?)

Umemiya (梅宮) – Shrine/Palace/Prince of Plum blossom, most likely symbolizing his position in Bofurin and his impression on other people

Hajime (一) – 一 means one; Hajime means beginning, symbolizing he is the beginning of Bofurin and ranked the 1st in Bofurin, might also be hinting that he is the eldest kid in his family and orphanage

Analysis: Umemiya is destined to change Furin for the better and to stand at the top of Bofurin

Hiiragi Toma (柊 登馬)

Hiiragi (柊) – False holly tree, a type of sacred tree that Japanese people use to create charms against evil spirits, therefore symbolizes cautious/watchful, protection (flower language: I will protect you), foresight and welcome

* Leaves of Hiiragi plants have sharp, saw-like edges, hence his shark teeth
*
The birthday flower of 7 Dec (Hiiragi’s birthday) is false holly tree
* Can be used as medicine to treat mouth ulcers (Sako is the only one that has been mentioned to have mouth ulcers, so…)
* Hiiragi plant tastes bitter, which might be why he likes black coffee

To (登) – To climb

Ma (馬) – Horse, a lasting symbol of refinement and power in Japanese culture due to its military significance

Toma (登馬) – To climb a horse

Analysis: His protectiveness on his juniors (Sako, Kaji, Sugishita and Sakura) is carved in his name

Hiiragi is destined to be the protector of his juniors (Sako, Kaji, Sugishita and Sakura) and to climb up to a position that symbolizes refinement and power (ie His leader position in Tamon Team) and his style of leadership (a cautious approach)

Tsubakino Tasuku (椿野 佑)

Tsubaki(椿) – Camellia flower, it have a meaning of passionate and romantic love in general, but in Japan Red Camellia flower symbolizes a noble death among Japanese warriors and samurai since when it fades, the entire flower falls instead of losing its petals one by one which people associates it with beheading

No(野) – Field, Plains

Tsubakino (椿野) – A field or plain of Camellia flower

Tasuku(佑) – save/rescue, help/assist, aid

Analysis Tsubaki no Tasusku can be interpreted as the aid of the camellia flower, meaning that Tsubakino might be destined to have a tragic end, but they are going to reverse it

Momose Takumi (桃瀬 匠)

Momo (桃): Peach/Peach flower (桃花), were thought to eliminate misfortune and evil in Japan, have a flower language of unequalled

* peach flower also hold positive symbolism in romance “I am your captive”

Se (瀬): Shallows in a river or stream

Momose (桃瀬): Peach flower shallows

Takumi (匠): craftsman (referring to his drawing hobby)

Analysis: might have really good popularity in terms of romance

Mizuki Saku (水木 聡久)

Mizu (水): water

Ki (木): wood

Mizuki (水木): dogwood tree, flowering season in early summer, symbolizes peace(平安)

Sa (聡): wise, intelligent (referring to his strategist position among the heavenly kings)

Ku (久): a long period of time, eternity

Saku(聡久): eternal wisdom, 咲く(saku) also means to blossom

Analysis: Destined to be the strategist in a team, Mizuki saku also means blossoming dogwood tree

*flowering dogwood (ハナミズキ) is mentioned in the manga (ch.66) with the meaning of eternal love and “am I indifferent to you?”

*The trees/flowers Umemiya, Hiiragi and Tsubakino represents all have their flowering season in autumn to winter; while Mizuki and Momose's are in summer, does it mean that Umemiya, Hiiragi and Tsubakino's task in the plot are done, while Mizuki and Momose still have something to do?

Sakaki Seiryu (榊 晴竜)

NOROSHI (烽)

Noroshi means signal fire in Japanese. Fire has always been the greatest threat to trees, therefore the term Noroshi shows how dangerous they have been to Borfurin. Since the Noroshi members were once enrolled in Furin High, their surnames also contain the radical 木, but as they are not part of Bofurin, they do not contain any plant name in their surname.

Moreover, only Endo and Takiishi’s names have an emphasis on fire, while the rest of the members are just products originally made of wood. Would this be referring to Endo and Takiishi were just using the other members as fuel to “burn” Bofurin?

Takiishi Chika (焚石 矢)

Analysis: On first impression, Endo is here to burn down Bofurin too because his name contains the radical 火(fire), but since his surname contains a tree name, he might join Bofurin in the future

Nii-sensei once said in an interview that Endo is inspired by the constellation Ophiuchus (meaning serpent bearer). Ophiuchus symbolizes “resurrection” and “healing”.

Tou (とう/頭) means head in Japanese, and when combined with Shishi, it means lion head. This could be symbolising them being elite fighters, the king of kings.

Although their gang name contains the kanji for lion (獅子), most of their members’ surname contains a herbivore animal. And all members’ surname contains an animal. (A similar entry requirement as Bofurin)

I believe Keel is designed to show Kaji’s true nature and/or where he might end up if he didn’t meet Hiiragi that day.

Original gang in the Wind Breaker Game. Kraken is the name of an enormous mythical sea monster (usually drawn with the appearance of an octopus or squid) said to appear off the coast of Norway. The naming theme of this gang is marine animals.

(I wonder if they had ever fought KEEL…)

Takoya Toru (蛸屋 透)

* leader of Kraken, the elder one of the Takoya siblings

Tako (蛸) - octopus (tako without the kanji could mean fool/idiot)

Ya (屋) - shop, store, restaurant, house

Analysis: Since his personality is said to be calm, he might have the ability to see through his opponents to take them down

LOCATIONS

Names of streets/districts of each team’s territory. Cho(町) refers to town or streets, Machi/Gai(街) refers to streets or downtown. Chiku(地区) refers to district.

MAKOCHI CHO (まこち町)

* Bofurin’s territory

There is no kanji given for Makochi, but I believe it came from the phrase 真東風(makochi/まこち). The definition of 真東風 is “wind coming from the east”, where wind coming from the east is a symbol of spring awakening. 真東風 comes from the poetry collection 永久百首(Eiku Hyakushu), composed by Fujiwara no Nakazane. The line that contains “makochi” is as follows:

まこち吹く 花のあたりの 風下は 時ぞともなき 雪ぞふりける
Translation: The true east wind blows, near the flowers, on the leeward side, at an unexpected time, snow has fallen

Besides, the title of ch.160 is 雪解け(ゆきどけ/Yukidoke), literally snow melting, and is also a metaphor for trying to be friendly again with someone after an argument. This term is often used to refer to the period between winter and spring when the snow is melted by the warmth of spring. Layered onto Sakura’s given name, Haruka which carries springlike connotations. I do think the title 雪解け could be interpreted as the tension between all the gangs that used to be enemies and also the relationship between Hiragi and Sako, being eased by Sakura, just like how the warmth of spring melts the snow.

Tonpu Shotengai(東風商店街/とんぷう しょうてんがい)

The landmark of Makochi. Tonpu and makochi both mean the wind coming from the east. Shotengai (商店街/しょうてんがい) means shopping street.

Furin Koukou(風鈴高校/ふうりん こうこう)

Furin highschool. Furin or windchime is a symbol of peace, harmony and good fortune. It was also used as a talisman to protect people from wind that brings misfortune.  

Kissa Potosu(喫茶 ポトス)

Cafe Pothos. Kissa (きっさ/喫茶) means coffee shop or a place where you drink tea. Pothos, known as Devil’s Ivy in English is said to be a plant that never dies. Pothos have a meaning of eternal wealth, enduring happiness and glowing vibrance.

Kikuchiya(菊地屋)

* The Dango shop Risa the cat came from

Kiku(菊) is the flower chrysanthemum in Japanese. Yellow chrysanthemums have a flower language of “very small amount of love” and “torn heart”. Purple chrysanthemums have a flower language of “trust me” and “dreams come true”. The flower language “trust me” could be referring to ep12 or ch36, where Sakura first learns about trusting people from Kaji.

Chi(地) means place and Ya(屋) means house. The entire name would mean a place/house of chrysanthemums.

Saboten (さぼてん)

* Bakery Cactus

Saboten means cactus in Japanese. In general, cactus have a flower language of “everlasting love”, “burning heart”, “warm heart” and “greatness”. (Side note: it is also used as a wedding gift)

Penpenkusa (ぺんぺん草)

* The monjyayaki place

Penpenkusa, also known as shepherd’s purse, have a flower language of “I offer you my all”. According to the game, this is the place where Kaji and his class had a gathering after he was elected as the class president. And according to the manga, Anzai, Tsuchiya and Nagato went there together after their reunion.

Tsukushi Seinikuten (つくし精肉店)

* The butcher’s shop that sells croquette

Tsukushi, is known as horsetail in English. Horsetails have a flower language of “ambition”, “effort”, “unexpected” and “surprise”.

Makochi Hospital (まこち病院)

Apparently there was a hospital in Makochi. 病院 means hospital in Japanese. The only character who was mentioned to be hospitalized there was Momijikawa’s grandmother (楓川 和代).

HIRAGAHARA MACHI (平ケ原街)

* Shishitoren’s territory

Hiragahara means plains or moor, large uncultivated lands where animals live.

Orion theatre/Ori (オリオン座/オリ)

Shishitoren’s base. I believe it was named after the constellation Orion. As a constellation, Orion has the meaning of “Have faith and go your own way”. It is also a symbol of warrior spirit in other cultures.
Ori means cage in Japanese.

KEISEI GAI (ケイセイ街)

* Roppo Ichiza’s territory

I believe “Keisei” is from the kanji “傾城”, which is associated with Kabukicho, the famous Japanese entertainment district. 傾城(けいせい/keisei) is a genre of dance in Kabuki. In Japanese Literature, it could also mean stunningly beautiful women or high-ranking courtesans.

Ougi has two meanings in Japanese. One is fan (those Japanese hand-held fans), and the other is “secret techniques (of a skill)”.

SUNABA CHIKU (砂把地区)

* Gravel’s territory

Suna(砂) means sand and ba(把) means grapse or bundle. Therefore Sunaba can be interpreted as bundling sand together. This could be symbolizing Suzuri gathering people from the Sunaba district just like bundling sand.

SENKAN ZOUSENSHOATO (千巻造船所跡)

* KEEL’s territory

千巻 and 戦艦 share the same pronunciation - senkan/せんかん here. 戦艦 means battleship in Japanese, while zousensho (ぞうせんしょ/造船所) means shipyard and ato (あと/跡) means ruins. Therefore Senkan Zousenshoato can be interpreted as “the ruins of the battleship shipyard”, which matches the naming theme of KEEL - battleships.


THEORIES

Mysteries of Suo

Suo’s family and past

In Japanese culture, the Falcon (隼) is a traditional symbol of nobility, wealth, and high social status. Given Suo’s refined manners, elegant "gentleman" persona, and penchant for traditional aesthetics, it is highly probable that his biological family once belonged to the societal elite. However, his first name, Hayato (隼飛), suggests a "Falcon flying away." This detail points toward a significant loss of status. Suo’s family fell from grace but lacked the maturity to handle the descent. Rather than taking responsibility for their decline, Suo’s parents likely devolved into "childish adults": irresponsible, selfish, and driven by volatile emotional outbursts rather than logic. In this toxic environment, they likely projected their failures onto Suo, blaming him or the world for their misfortune, which forced him to grow up instantly and shoulder the adult responsibilities his parents had abandoned.

Growing up in the shadow of such "childish adults" taught Suo that raw emotions are dangerous, messy, and unpredictable. Unlike Sakura or Kiryu, he didn’t have the power or courage to fight back, so he was forced to become a master of human observation. He learnt to read expressions and shifts in tone to predict his family’s next tantrum or possible physical punishments. He realized early on that fighting back directly against irresponsible, irrational adults would only cause more chaos and intensified his suffering. Here he became a bird trapped in a cage or a “slave” to his family.

Consequently, Suo developed a sophisticated form of escapism through obedience. He adopted a mask of perfect compliance, "obeying" physically to appease his family while remaining entirely free mentally. By retreating into the inner sanctum of his mind, he found a sanctuary that his family’s rules could never reach. This internal world was populated by his love for animals, both real and imaginary. As noted in the character book, his fascination with imaginary animals serves as the ultimate expression of this freedom. In his mind, he could cultivate a reality filled with creatures that were pure, powerful, and unconstrained by the "cage" of his biological reality.

 From ch.186: “But if you try to seal everything inside while it grows, they will eventually eat you up”

But as seen in Kotoha’s back story, you can’t just seal all your emotions inside and live like that forever. And that’s where I think his master comes into play. His master might have provided him a safe haven where he can get a rest from his family. There, he finally acquired the physical skills to defend himself and the mental tools to regulate the chaos of his past. This is the foundation of the fighting style we saw him use. He fights with his head rather than just his fists. When Suo enters a conflict, he isn't just striking an opponent, he is "managing" them, using his deep understanding of human behavior to manipulate their movements and mental state.

As soon as Suo learns to fight back to his abusive family, the tension between him and his family grew day by day, until it reaches a snapping point. At that point, Suo finally chose to fight back (physically), but obviously things didn’t turn out well and Suo injured his eye. And that’s my guess of the origin of the evil spirit sealed in his right eye. After that he might have fled home and lived with his master. He might not even have his own room, which is why his room wasn’t shown in the character book.

This history of hidden trauma also provides a likely explanation for his physical modesty, specifically his reluctance to take off his shirt. While his eyepatch serves as a visible symbol of the snapping point, the skin beneath his clothes may still bear the scars of his "obedient" years. For Suo, these marks would be reminders of the years he spent being "corrected" by adults who lacked self-control.

He might have decided to join Furin to start over. Furin is a place ran by deliquents where no one cares about his origin. By joining Bofurin, he is finally trying to live out the harmony promised by his surname, Suo (Chinese Redbud), replacing the selfish chaos of his biological family with his friends at Furin. But he might still be scared that someday his controlling family will catch up to him (which I think it did in ch.208), so he kept his distance from his classmates.

Suo VS Nirei (information gathering)

The contrast between Suo and Nirei’s information-gathering styles is perfectly showcased during their very first interactions with Sakura. Nirei relies on asking questions and collecting existing data, which is why he was completely unaware of Sakura saving Kotoha the previous day; because he didn't explicitly ask anyone about it, he initially only saw Sakura's aggressive exterior. Suo, on the other hand, relies on active observation. He "goes out and looks." By simply paying attention to his surroundings and observing the town's atmosphere, Suo already knew about Sakura's heroic acts before they even spoke. This resulted in Suo to learning about Sakura earlier than the rest of the class.

Suo VS natto

Natto is a traditional Japanese food made from fermented soybeans. It had a strong smell and slimy texture which many people dislike. Suo is one of the many who hate natto.

Natto itself is not directly tied to any spiritual or religious rituals, but its main ingredient - soybeans, is used to expel evil spirits during the Setsubun Festival (節分). We know that Suo claims to have sealed an Ancient Chinese evil spirit in his right eye. Since natto is associated with driving away spirits, it could subconsciously repel Suo. The evil spirit might be the symbolism of a memory Suo sealed away. For example, if he is trying to hide his eye injury under the eyepatch, this memory could be the trauma of how he got his eye injured. Natto might remind him of this memory, which could explain why he disliked it.

Suo's birthday and dream

Suo’s birthday is on the 28th March, a date rich with historical and cultural significance. In the Chinese lunar calendar, 28th March is the birthday of Dongyue Dadi (東嶽大帝), the Great Emperor or the Eastern Peak, a Daoist deity associated with Mount Tai. In both Chinese and Japanese traditions, he governs life and death, overseeing the Book of Life, and determining when souls face judgement.

On the other hand, in the Western calendar, 28th March is the Serfs’ Emancipation Day in China, freeing nearly a million people from bondage. This might sound familiar if you have seen Suo’s character profile - in his profile, it was written that his dream is the emancipation of slaves. While I am not sure what is behind this dream, I do think his dream could have been inspired by his birthday.

Suo’s master and their Buddhist symbolism

The following may be a far fetch, but I do think it might be relevant, so I’m gonna put it here:

As mentioned above, Suo’s birthday coincides with Dongyue Dadi’s birthday. Therefore there may be a connection between Suo and Dongyue Dadi. Dongyue Dadi is the holy messenger between heaven and the world. Suo is the one who helped Sakura communicate with his classmates, just like how Dongyue Dadi passes messages from heaven to the world.

Dongyue Dadi is also the deity that judges souls and gives them punishment in the afterlife. When Suo fights, he judges his enemies based on their behaviour and inflicts various levels of humiliation according to how “rotten” their personalities are. This is similar to how Dongyue Dadi judges the souls and punishes them according to their sins.

Moreover, Dongyue Dadi is known as the ruler of the underworld and is believed to have strong powers that combat evil. Suo claims to have sealed an ancient Chinese spirit in his right eye, under his eye patch.  This could be a hint that Suo's eyepatch or eye injury is the proof of him trying to combat “evil”.

Moreover, Dongyue Dadi is known as Taizan Fukun (たいざんふくん/泰山府君) in the Japanese Buddist adaption. In this adaption, Taizan Fukun is a follower of Yama-ten (焔摩天). We know that Suo has a master. If Taizan Fukun represents Suo, then Yama-ten may represent his master. Yama-ten is known as the king of hell and is responsible for judging the dead and determining their karmic fate and Taizan Fukun is the administrator.

Suo has polycoria

Polycoria is a rare eye condition that causes more than one pupillary opening in the iris. An example of a character with polycoria is Danny from Angels of Death (as seen in the picture). I have to admit that the look of polycoria is quite creepy, but it has a good meaning in Chinese culture. There is a belief in the Chinese culture that a child born with polycoria was destined to be a great king or sage. This might be hinting Suo’s future as one of the heavenly kings.

However, Suo might have decided to cover his eye with an eyepatch because it scared other people and made him miserable. OR, someone or even himself injured his eye and caused him to lose his eye.

Due to the look of polycoria, I feel like it is too creepy to be included in a manga like Wind Breaker.

Suo has heterochromia

Just like how Sako and Kaji have similar backstories but made a different decision and ended up in different situations, Suo’s backstory might be similar to Sakura's, but he took a different approach. Sakura endured all the bullying he got from his appearance until he got into Furin. But Suo did the opposite. Suo might be bullied too due to his heterochromia, but he chose to escape instead. He decided to cover up his right eye and live like a normal person. Suo once mentioned he was no match for Sakura. I believe he meant their mentality. They are both in the same situation, yet in Suo’s eyes, Sakura took the difficult path and made a better decision.

Suo having heterochromia also explains why he knows what Sakura did in ch.1 while the others don’t. Suo might have kept an eye on Sakura ever since Sakura joined their town because Suo finally found someone like him. It is just natural for him to pay more attention on someone he is interested in.

Shanti

Nii sensei once drew Suo as the main character of the song Shanti (by Wotaku). This sparked inspirations of theories about Suo as a Mafia member. While I think it would be too dark for Wind Breaker if the plot dives deep into Mafia works like human traffiking and stuff, I won’t deny the possibility of Suo being a Mafia member, since they did mention shady businesses before (in ch.76).

 

I don’t think Nii sensei chose Shanti for Suo just for his Chinese mafia identity (if he turns out to be one), but also how the impression of the song matches Suo’s “absolute dominance” behind his polite smile. Shanti is a Sanskrit word meaning peace, calm, and harmony, yet the lyrics itself described a brutal underground deals and cold-blooded violence. Suo was first introduced as a nice and helpful boy, protecting and supporting his friends. Yet, Suo can also be cold and brutal towards people he don’t respect.

In the song, the dealer (ie the main character) uses sweet words to manipulate his victims and ruthlessly punishes anyone who break his rules. In fights, Suo “teaches” his opponents a lesson in a “kind” manner(at least his tone was) which breaks them psychologically. Also, as seen in the KEEL arc, when Suo is angry, he turns into a terrifying enforcer that mercilessly knocks out his opponent.

“生きてればお客 死んでれば商材 (If alive, then it’s a customer; if dead, then it’s a merchandise)” From the lyrics, the victims were always under the dealer’s control, no matter dead or alive. The same goes for Suo. In battle, Suo doesn't just fight; he dominates. His martial arts style is about using the opponent’s momentum against them and he plays with his enemies like a cat with a mouse. He don’t even let his opponents chose when to “lose” the fight. This "Elegant Brutality" mirrors the cold, calculative nature of the dealer in Shanti.

Suo's misfortune

(Manga Spoilers for ch 208)

This analysis was inspired by a post on Twitter, analyzing the moon in ch 208. So I did some more research and realized Suo had a lot of symbolism associated with misfortune.  

Moons

Let’s start with moons. Suo was looking at a hazy moon (moon covered with thin fog). The hazy moon symbolises an ambiguous relationship (basically situationship) and the painfulness of saying goodbye. This could be referring to his “situationship” with Nirei and Sakura and how he has to “painfully” part ways with them by disappearing silently.

The 13th night moon

Moreover, the post mentioned that it wasn't a full moon, but the moon you would see on the 13th day of the 9th month in the lunar calendar (this: 🌔). If you look closely at the panel of the moon, you could see the moon not being a perfect full circle, but slightly missing on the left side (right side if you’re in the southern hemisphere). This moon was called "the 13th night". This moon can usually be seen in mid Oct to late Oct. This year(2026), you can see it on 22 Oct, which kind of matches the canon time.

In Japanese culture, when you go for moon gazing (specifically on the day of the 13th or 15th moon), there is a rule you should follow: You should see both the 13th moon and the 15th moon. If you see only either the 13th moon or the 15th moon (i.e., the full moon), it is considered unlucky. Suo was shown gazing at the 13th moon; he may not have gazed at the 15th moon.

As Nirei was always described as the sun, Suo was always described as the moon. While the full moon represents reunion and hopefulness, the 13th moon is associated with incompleteness, imperfection, and unreachable reunion.  In a literary context, the 13th moon is often used to contrast 'promises of the past' with 'the hardships of the present,' symbolizing a past that feels as vivid as a dream yet remains forever beyond reach.

The 13th moon is “close to complete but incomplete” and “close to perfect but imperfect”, just like how Suo is. Suo’s right eye was covered by an eyepatch, and he might be missing an eye, hence incomplete. If this 13th moon is a representation of Suo, then its symbolism might be hints to Suo’s thoughts and feelings. Suo’s time spent in Furin is like a dream to him, but now he have some personal matters that he would rather not drag his friends into. Suo might not be leaving/disappearing on his own will, and he might not be able to reunite with Nirei and the others ever again (or at least that could be what he’s thinking). He even chose to leave on a rainy day where all traces of him would be washed away, making it extremely hard for others to track him down. This also turns the memories he shared with Nirei and the others into a common dream they shared, just like the symbolism of the 13th moon.

Moreover, the current chapter (ch 208) was released on 18 Feb, the day on which a solar eclipse occurred (only visible from Antarctica and some parts of South America). The next chapter (ch 209) is going to be released on 4 Mar, the day on which a lunar eclipse (where the moon is going to turn blood red) is going to take place. Both eclipses, especially solar eclipses, were considered impurities and harbingers of natural disasters or social unrest in both cultures. This might be a coincidence, but it might also be a hint at the disasters or unrest in later chapters.

Clouds

Look closely at the clouds surrounding the moon. You can see it forming half of the Yin-and-Yang symbol or a Magatama(勾玉) shape.

Let’s start with Yin-and-Yang symbols. Yin-and-Yang symbols should be harmonious (with both sides present) and as a complete circle. When missing either side, it has a strong symbolism of imbalance and loneliness. This suggests that there is an imbalance of power and the seal in his right eye is going to break. Jokes aside, that could be a hint at how the current harmonious, peaceful environment is going to break. As you can see from the picture, the light side of the symbol is missing, and only the dark side is there. This could be a hint that the “light” that used to be there is now gone. And things wouldn’t go well with the dark side missing. As a member of Bofurin, Suo helped maintain the peace in Makochi. As the heart and brain of class 1-1, he made sure everyone is getting along with each other. Suo is like a shadow that holds everything (especially class 1-1) together. With Suo missing, all of the harmony is going to fall apart. When defending the town, they’ll lack a strong fighter and someone who can lead the class. When Sakura and Sugishita fight, no one will be there to stop them.

The clouds are also like the shape of a Magatama, a talisman against evil spirits. They were also a symbol of healing and rebirth, due to their shape of a fetus. This could be hinting at how Suo is finally going to have some character development soon.

 

Numbers

Moving on to the numbers. You may have known that 13 is labelled as an unlucky number due to the Bible story of Judas (the 13th disciple) betraying Jesus. As mentioned in Suo's section, the flower Suo represents is Hanazuo (i.e., Chinese redbud), whose flower language includes "betrayal". You can read about the reason in Suo's section. This adds more to the traitor theory below.

It was also quite obvious that Suo was heavily associated with the number 4. Whenever he appears with a number or in a sequence, it would be the number 4. A few examples were the manga's 4th volume cover, the DVD's 4th volume cover and the 4th anniversary illustration from Nii-Sensei. I wouldn’t be surprise if he’s the fourth child in his family or even the 4th disciple of his master. (Not to mention ch.209, the first chapter in Suo’s arc will be released on 4th March)

4 is an unlucky number in both Chinese and Japanese culture, as its pronunciation is similar to how to pronounce the word “death(死/shi)”. I highly doubt Suo would be killed off since this is not a manga as dark as this, but it could be hinting that Suo's past revolved around death.

On the other hand, the number 4 was also a symbol of solidity and order in Chinese culture. Like a four-legged table or a square, it represents a firm foundation and stability. If Suo is represented by the number 4, then he would be a pillar in the groups/teams he belongs to. Without him, the groups/teams would start to fall apart, like how a 4 legged table losing one of its leg.

Directions (specifically East)

An easter egg that might be another coincidence:

A 1st year student mentioned they were short on people on the East side. So, after exiting Bofurin’s territory, which way would Suo possibly go after he parted ways with Nirei?

Nirei went to the direction of the Forest Park, so Suo could possible go towards Shishitoren. So, which direction was Shishitoren’s territory according to Makochi? East, assuming the map wasn’t rotated and the bridges are on the north side.

Out of all directions, it was the East side that they were short on people. I don’t think this was just a hint of a strong team who dares messes with both Bofurin and Shishitoren at the same time, but also as a warning for the upcoming danger.

The following only holds if my theory of Suo’s buddhist symbolism is correct: Suo’s buddist symbolism is Dongyue Dadi(東嶽大帝) and the east side is where Dongyue Dadi’s territory is. Therefore, Suo going east is not only about him leaving Bofurin, but going back to where he was from. This place is most likely his family or his master’s place. I’m leaning towards his master’s place since I think that’s the only place where Suo would have some sense of belonging other than Bofurin.

Traitor Theory and Suo Vs Endo

(Manga Spoilers for ch 149)

First of all, for most characters (especially Bofurin), their importance/role in the story is encoded in their surname while their personality/impression is encoded in their given name.

For Suo, his surname represents the Chinese Redbud and Chinese Redbud symbolizes betrayal. Therefore, I believe that Suo will go against Bofurin, or at least Sakura in the future.

Suo’s given name and Endo’s given name, Hayato and Yamato respectively are the names of two ancient Japanese tribes. Although the kanji of the tribe and their names are different, I still believe this history might be relevant to Suo and Endo. This is because all the main characters’ names are carefully designed and meaningful. Endo as one of the most important antagonists, his name should be as meaningful as the other main characters. Yet, his given name(in kanji form), Yamato(哉真斗), hold almost no meaning in Japanese. Therefore I believe this history is why Endo is named Yamato, but encoded in different kanjis.

So here’s the history of the Hayato and Yamato tribe:

The Hayato is a tribe of ancient Japanese people that existed during the Nara period. The Yamato is another tribe of ancient Japanese people that existed alongside the Hayato. The Hayato frequently resisted the Yamato rule until the year 720 when the Hayato rebellion broke out. It was a rebellion of the Hayato against the Yamato. The rebellion ended in the year 721 with the Yamato being victorious.

So based on the current development of the story, Endo has now switched sides or may even join Bofurin (because his name meets the entry requirement of Bofurin). If Suo ever goes against Bofurin, Endo would likely be there to fight him, or at least assist Sakura in taking him down. And in the end, Endo and Bofurin would be the victorious side.

Moreover, Endo's full name actually holds more meaning in Chinese than in Japanese. As Suo is the only other character whose character design is related to Chinese culture, Endo might have something to do with Suo's background.

The someone we all know

I have seen a lot of people theorising about who this “someone” is, yet I think the answer is right before our eyes - Shitara Yuki.  In the Japanese original text, the mysterious guy used the phrase 誰かさんみたいに. みたいに means “just like someone/something” and 誰かさん when can be translated to “someone”, it is also used as an indirect way of referring to the listener, which is Shitara in this case. This might be hinting Shitara’s backstory where he went to Furin to get stronger and inspired others to do the same.

Frank’s real identity (Endo’s tattoo)

First of all, Frank is not the name of a person but the cannon. This cannon was used worldwide in the 16th century and was introduced to the Japanese. The cannon was then nicknamed kunikuzushi (国崩し, "Country Destroyer") because of the history behind it (I’m not going to go into detail here, but if you are interested, you can read it on the wiki page). Moreover, the name of chapter 100 (the chapter where the VS Noroshi war starts) in Japanese is “国崩大火 開演”, referring to Endo firing the cannon at Bofurin in an attempt to burn and destroy Bofurin. 国崩 refers to the cannon, 大火 refers to a large fire (caused by the cannon) and 開演 means the beginning of the show.

The formal Japanese name for this frank cannon is “Ishibiya (石火矢)”. Ishi(石) stands for stone, bi(火) stands for fire and ya(矢) stands for arrow. If this definition sounds familiar to you, you probably could have guessed why Endo got this tattoo. This tattoo refers to either the Noroshi or Takiishi Chika. For Takiishi, his kanji is 焚石(Takiishi) 矢(Chika), and more or less has the same literal meaning as Ishibiya (焚石 矢 = burn + stone + arrow). Therefore, I believe this tattoo is just the symbol of the Noroshi or Endo just loved Takiishi too much.

Sakura and Sakra

While I was doing my research, I came across a deity that I thought represented Sakura. This deity is Śakra (Taishakuten/たいしゃくてん/帝釈天 in Japanese).

Sakura and Śakra have similar pronunciations. The Sanskrit name of Śakra is Śakro devānām indraḥ which is translated as 'The Able Heavenly Emperor.' In Sanskrit, 'Śakra' means capable, powerful, and benevolent; 'Deva' refers to celestial beings or deities; and 'Indra' signifies a ruler, conqueror, or supreme victor. The name conveys the meaning of 'one who is able to be the ruler of the gods in heaven, refering to how Śakra is the commander of the four kings. Sakura, as our protagonist is destined to be the top of Bofurin, the commander of the four kings, just like Śakra.

 Moreover, the heaven that Śakra rules over is imagined to be the polar center of the physical world, around which the Sun and Moon revolve. It is mentioned in previous interviews that Nii-sensei likes to design characters with opposite characteristics, for example, a sun and a moon. If Nirei is the Sun, then Suo would be the moon. And their polar center? Sakura.

Suo VS Sakura

As mentioned above, Suo’s master might be represented by Yamaten. Although it was never mentioned in any Buddist tales that Yama-ten and Teishakuten fought, in some literature and manga, characters that are represented by Yama-ten and Teishakuten did fight each other (E.g. Jujutsu Kaisen: Gojo VS Sukuna; Onmyoji: Teishakuten VS Yamaten). In these stories, Yama-ten defeats Teishakuten. If my theory of Yama-ten and Teishakuten is true, then it might hint at a fated battle between Sakura and Suo's master (or just Sakura VS Suo, because in some belief, Yamaten and Dongyue Daidi is the same person), where Sakura would be having the lower ground or even be defeated. But since Wind Breaker is a story where the “heroes” will eventually win, I doubt Sakura would ever give up and accept defeat. In the end, he would challenge Suo’s master or Suo again until he came out as the victorious one.

Sakura and Kaji’s future

Sakura’s path seems to mirror Kaji’s. Below is what they experienced in common (Manga spoilers!!).

  1. They got hated for what they were born with (Sakura’s appearance, Kaji’s berserker mode)
  2. They got elected as the grade captain by their classmates
  3. Their class got into a brawl fight in year 1 and was losing
  4. They messed up and needed their seniors to help them (Kaji helped Sakura, Hiiragi helped Kaji)
  5. After the fight, they see themselves unfit as the grade captain and went to talk to their seniors (Sakura talked to Kaji, Kaji talked to Hiiragi)
  6. Their seniors told them to trust their friends
  7. They got accepted by their friends and continued to be the grade captain
  8. In the Noroshi fight, they have to fight someone stronger than them and are on the losing side (Sakura VS Endo, Kaji VS Banjo)
  9. They both decided to sacrifice themselves to protect their friends (Sakura decided to go with Endo even though he didn’t want to, Kaji activating his berserker mode even though he hated it)
  10. Hiiragi came to save them just in time (Hiiragi arrived when Sakura was about to agree to Endo’s condition, and when Kaji was about to be killed by Banjo)

Extra Point: their friend group look alike too.

Sakura might become the leader of Bofurin and Kaji might become one of the heavenly kings

Because of the above, I believe what is going to happen to Kaji will happen to Sakura too (or vice versa). But the biggest difference they have is that Sakura wanted to be the top but Kaji just wanted to follow Hiiragi. So if the 3rd years have to be out of the scene, Sakura will most likely take over Umemiya’s position as the leader, while Kaji will take over Hiiragi’s position as one of the Heavenly Kings and continue to guide Sakura like how his name suggests.

Sakura’s backstory

As mentioned in the previous theory, Sakura and Kaji had got similar experiences ever since they joined Bofurin. It is possible that their backstory are similar too. If this is the case, Sakura might have a someone from his childhood who was the only one kind to him (as a parallel of Kaji and Hiiragi). This person was the reason why Sakura still have kindness deep down despite being bullied and rejected all the time. However, something happened later on and he lost that person.

Sakura once said, "Everyone has got one or two secrets that they don't wanna talk about". Since other character's dialogues are also more or less based on their experience (examples below), I believe Sakura might have said this based on his experience too and that secret is him losing that person. He might be blaming himself for the lost of that person like how Umemiya used to blame himself for the death of his parents, and therefore decided to keep it as a secret. After the loss of that person, he kind of gave up on himself and decided to live his life as a delinquent, entered the popular delinquent school Furn High and fight his way to the top there.

Example 1: “I'm happy that you realized it before you lost it, I'm honestly relieved.” - Umemiya (to Tomiyama)
Example 2: “Even if you think of yourself as trash, it doesn't always mean that others will see you in the same light for better or worse” - Kaji (to Nagato)

More from Noroshi

In the manga, it was mentioned that there were 10 members in the Noroshi. However, in the current arc, only 8 members (inc Endo and Takiishi) were mentioned/named. Currently there are no clues hinting who the remaining two members are. However, I believed that they will be shown/mentioned in future arcs and they might be related to characters whose backstories are not known (e.g. Suo and Kiryu).

Moreover, I am not sure if this is a mistake or not, but in the cover of ch.105, there were 11 people shown on the cover, which is 1 more than the number of members the Noroshi has. If this is not a mistake but a hint, I have two assumptions:

  1. They have a mastermind or a member outside Furin and that is the 11th member. This member is not known to Bofurin, resulting in Mizuki mentioning the Noroshi is a 10-people group.
  2. Endo leaves the Noroshi and joins Bofurin, then someone else joined the Noroshi in Endo's place, keeping the number of members at 10

Kaji and Sako

Just like how Sakura can be compared to Kaji, Sako can be compared to Kaji too. They were the same age and both got saved by Hiiragi in primary school in some way. Then they both decided to follow Hiiragi. But when Hiiragi pushed them away, they made a different decision and ended up in different situations.

Kaji and Sako’s Special Day

In Sako’s flashback when fighting Hiiragi, it was shown that Sako and Kaji went to the same middle school. Since they were the same age, they should be graduating from middle school at the same time.

However, in Sako’s flashback with Kaji (ch.126), Sako was in his casual wear, while Kaji was in his uniform.

* Translation: So you came today, huh
There’s a flower in Kaji’s pocket, it may hint that it’s his graduation day. If they are really from the same middle school, it should be Sako’s graduation day too. So why did Sako show up in casual wear? There might be two reasons:

  1. Sako transferred school after Hiiragi went to Furin, so it was not his graduation day and therefore it is normal for him to not show up in his uniform. Given that in Japan, a school year starts and ends in April and Hiiragi telling Sako not to follow him takes place on Hiiragi’s graduation day, it is somehow impossible to transfer schools in such a short time frame.
  2. Sako decided to skip his graduation for some reason. But then for some reason, he still decided to go to school, maybe to see his friends.

The word “today” was also emphasized in Kaji’s dialogue, so there must be something special about that day. Either it was the reason why there was a flower in Kaji’s uniform or why Sako was covered in bandages (I’m guessing he went into a fight and got recruited by Shishitoren).

Eating the Grapes

The fox in Sako’s name came from the story “The Fox and the Grapes”, while his entire last name means “assistant of the fox”. This might be hinting that he will assist the fox in eating the grapes. In other words, he will take action to follow Hiiragi once again.

In ch.126, Sako thought about what would happen if he chose to go to Furin. Will Hiiragi care for him just like how he did with Kaji? Will he be able to fight Banjo with Kaji and prevent Kaji from getting injured? Will things turn out better? In the Japanese version, it wasn’t specified, so I assumed it was all of the above.

Since Sako has such regret, he may choose to fight with Kaji and Hiiragi again when given the chance. However, it is highly unlikely for Sako to transfer to Furin because the format of his name does not contain the radical for wood (木) (ie the entry requirement).

Therefore, we will likely have another arc where Sako fights alongside Kaji and maybe also Hiiragi. It may also show what happened to Sako before that day.

Translation:
もし オレも そちらに行くことを選んでいたら = If I chose to go to that side (Furin)
あんなふうに = in that way

Fake Identity Theory

  • the Suo in Furin feels like an empty shell
  • when having a wood radical in his name, it could mean sappanwood, but Sappanwood does not have any flower languages
  • yet according to official merch, Suo is usually associated with hanazuo(花蘇枋), which the kanji does not usually have the wood radical
  • this is where I realized there was a rule for choosing the readings of character names for their kanji
  • (explain rule, give example like Shishitoren members, Momijikawa and Suzuri)

While I was researching names (again), I found an interesting rule Nii-sensei followed when deciding which reading they would use for each character and this might be a hint to Suo’s mysteries. If you know some Japanese, you would know that a kanji can have several readings and the same word can have several meanings depending on the kanji used. This is how sensei made their word game: The more the character betrays their heart, the less common their name’s reading becomes.

Group 1: Always stay true to themselves

Examples: Sakura Haruka, Nirei Akihiko, Kaji Ren and Umemiya Hajime

They never betray themselves. They do whatever they think they should and they have nothing to hide. Hence, the reading of their name is also straightforward by using the most common reading of the kanji.

Honorable mention: Suzuri Shuhei

Suzuri was first introduced as an antagonist. He might looked like he betrayed himself by admitting that his way of survival is wrong, but he have no choice. But he never tried to hide this or lie and make himself feel better. He stayed true and admitted his “wrongdoings”. That’s why his name was using the most common reading of the kanji.

Group 2: Lost themselves once, but now found their ways

Examples: Tomiyama Choji, Togame Jo, Sako Kota, Momijikawa Sakae

They once did something that was against their intention, but after a proper fight conversation, they realized their mistakes and are now back on the right track. Hence, sensei chose a less common reading for their names (specifically surnames). For example:

Tomiyama’s name contains the kanji for rabbit (兎), whose most common reading is Usagi(うさぎ). But here, sensei decided to use a less common one - To(と) instead.

Momijikawa’s tree is a maple tree, whose kanji is (楓) and the most common reading is Kaede(かえで). But sensei chose to use Momiji(もみじ) to show that his initial hatred of Sakura was against his intention of protecting the town as Sakura was never his enemy to begin with. The most common kanji for Momiji is, which is another species of maple tree. Nevertheless, Momijikawa is still “qualified” as a Furin student and a Bofurin member.

Group 3: Deeply hidden true identity

Example: Suo Hayato

Ever since I started reading Wind Breaker, Suo has always given me a feeling of an empty shell. Suo’s name contains two different types of plants: Sappanwood and Chinese Redbud. In Japanese, both Sappanwood and Chinese Redbud have the same pronunciation: スオウ, yet the most common kanji for both of them is 蘇芳 instead of 蘇枋.

If Sappanwood is his “mask” in Bofurin, then Chinese Redbud would be what he really is. Sappanwood does not have any specific flower language. It feels like he changed his name to contain a tree and a wooden radical, faking his identity just to fit into Bofurin.

Chinese redbud, on the other hand, has several flower languages, including “betrayal”.  This would be a hint that Suo would betray Sakura and the others (or at least act like one) But sensei mentioned in an interview that this arc is about forgiveness and kindness

As Suo's fake address was shown in the manga, people started thinking whether the name “Suo Hayato” was real too. So I was thinking if this was never his real name to begin with, what would his real name be? Before we come up with predictions on his real name, let's start with the “naming rules”.

Rule 1: All groups have a theme, and their member’s names must follow that theme

If you had read the name analysis above, then you would have known that each group has a theme and all their member’s names must follow that theme. For example plants for Bofurin, animals for Shishitoren and warships for Keel.

But we have exceptions like Endo who is from Noroshi and is also the mastermind of Keel. How would his name work? Surname follows Noroshi's theme, given name follows Keel's theme. If you want a detailed explanation of his name, you can read here (insert link).
