Description of Learning Outcome Goal(s) for the academic year
The learning outcome I am going to address this academic year comes from the COP 1000 Introduction to Programming course I teach. The course level student learning outcome states “Summarize a trend in computer technology.” The corresponding assignment is a report. The report assignment instructions indicate that quality of writing is a major component of the grade. The rubric for the assignment includes the criteria from the COM rubric used to measure the general education competency as part of the last assessment cycle.
For the assignment in my ground section during Fall 2013, the COM criterion with the lowest average score was Syntax / Grammar at 2.7. While this is not a course that aims to teach writing skills, students in this course should be technically competent enough to effectively use spelling and grammar tools. A computer literacy course, CGS 1000, is a prerequisite for COP 1000.
My goal is to increase this average score for my ground section of COP 1000 this semester. I plan to effect this score by orienting students to the Grammarly web service.
Methods of evaluation to be used:
The evaluation to be used is the same rubric for the same report assignment this year. Additionally, I will have another faculty member score the reports from last year and this year to check for consistency and eliminate bias. I will also objectively compare the spelling and grammar errors reported by Microsoft Word and Grammarly for both sets of reports.
