Laptop Mobile Lab
Before a Teacher is allowed to use the Mobile Laptop Cart, they must go through 1 hour Lab Use Training. Fill out the above chart for YOUR records and keep in your files.
II. Read through General Laptop Care AND Devices FAQ
III. How to CARE for the Lab:
1. Plan ahead. Make sure you run Ninite --`on Fridays on all PC machines in your possession.
2. Keep Laptops on so they can receive updates at night.
3. Check Laptops out to specific students each period. Keep the assigned checkout list on the cart. If breakage occurs, we will need to address the specific student who handled the device last.
4. Make sure students understand how to maintain the chargers and how to replace laptops into the cart without pulling out the wires.
5. Monitor the cart regularly. If heat builds up in the cart, keep the doors open.
6. UPDATES: If a software package needs an update, you must use an administrator username and password to allow the update. You will be given these credentials at the workshop. YOU ARE NOT to share this with students. If you need to update a package, right mouse click and select “Run as Administrator”. Make students turn their heads if you need to type in these credentials. We monitor these credentials and this username should NOT be used to log students onto a computer. It should not be left running on a computer. Do your updates and then log off of these credentials!!!
7. If you need a laptop worked on for software issues, plug the laptop into a network cable and turn off the wireless and turn in a maintenance request. Make sure the computer is ON.
8. If you need a laptop worked on for hardware purposes, send in a maintenance request and turn off the laptop.
IV. About the Cart:
Try not to move the cart while laptops are turned on inside the cart. The cart has one or two electrical cables and plugs for charging the laptops. If there are two cables, they MUST be plugged into DIFFERENT circuits. This means that both electrical plugs CANNOT be plugged into the same wall socket. You will have to stretch the cables across the room to find 2 different circuits.
V. About the Batteries:
The batteries have a life of about 4 hours, this means that the laptops will need to be returned to the cart during lunch and after school for charging. BE SURE to plug them in as you return them to the cart! BE CAREful how you plug them in.
VI. About Laptop Care:
Laptops do NOT belong in laps! Do not bang on keyboard or touch the LCD screen with your fingers. Please make sure that students do NOT turn off the machines, but simply log off and close the lids (if they are to be stored in a cart). Please make sure that you instruct them to keep their fingers OFF the screens. Please make sure that they have clean hands BEFORE they use the laptops.
VII. Storing the Cart Overnight:
Always store the cart with the power cords plugged into the appropriate wall outlets so that the computers are charging overnight. Make sure that you lock the cart with your key
VIII. Substitute Teachers:
Use of the mobile lab will NOT be allowed in classrooms with substitute teachers in charge. No exceptions.
IX. Repairs / Damage:
Report any suspected problems with equipment or software to the technology staff immediately. Do not attempt to repair or disassemble any lab equipment. Unreported damage may result in administrative action.
X. Setting up the Classroom:
1.Open cart. It is best if one person passes out the laptops instead of a crowd of students around the cart.
2. GENTLY Disconnect the power cord from the back of the laptop
3. Bring the computer to a flat, stable work surface without food or drinks nearby.
4. Gently open the laptop.
5. Power ON: If the top right power indicator light is green, the power is already on. Wiggle the mouse or rub the pad to wake the computer out of hibernation. Also there are indicator lights that show the battery charge status and the wireless status. If the laptop does not “wake up”, push the power button quickly to wake the laptop.
6. Most of the time, you will find the machines with power ON.
7. Wireless Capabilities
a. The laptops themselves can be wireless as long as they are within the reach of a wireless access point.
b. The wireless indicator light should show at least 3 bars. If the laptop does not show 3 bars: (1) Disconnect from the wireless and reconnect OR (2) ask the student to move to a different location in the room to find more bars.
FYI: All the blue lettered Function Keys may be activated in combination with holding down the blue Fn key.
8. When finished working, logoff the machine, return it to the cart shelf and plug the power supply cable back into the computer.
XI. Printing
The Arp Tech Dept does not support students printing. If a document is to be turned in, they are capable of sending a “share” link to their teacher. If other occasions arise, please notify Dr J.
XII. LAPTOP USE POLICY
It is the responsibility of the classroom teacher to teach students the proper use and care of the laptop computer. Some of the items that must be reviewed with students include:
1. The mobile lab is governed by the Arp ISD network and Internet Acceptable Use Policy.
2. Laptops MUST remain on a flat stable (desk) surface at all times. Carrying the laptops around the room is NOT appropriate.
3. No horseplay around the computers.
4. Avoid touching the monitor.
5. Do not attempt to clean the monitor with anything except a dedicated screen wipe. Do NOT spray anything towards a computer.
6. Students should come to class with clean hands.
7. Students must use their own username and password. No student should log onto a computer for another student.
8. When the student is finished using the computer, the computer should be logged off, remain ON, and returned to the cart.
9. Playing games or music is not permitted. Laptops are given to teachers for use with a campus curriculum-related project.
10. Downloading software is not permitted. If the laptop needs software, contact the Tech Dept through a maintenance request.
11. Internet use is for academic and educational purposes only. Surfing the Internet is never a good idea. Teachers should provide either (1) specific search parameters OR (2) the actual links to sites for research.
12. Logoff the computer at least 5 minutes before the end of the class so that there is enough time for all computers to be returned to the cart.
13. If students need to leave their desk or room, machines should be put back in the cart.
14. Students should not be left unattended while they are working on computers.
15. Substitute teachers are not to use PC carts. Leave paperwork for students if you are to be absent.
16. Students should store files on the desktop only Temporarily! They should pull files from their desktop to their Google Drive before logging off the computer.
17. Updating the Computer software or OS can be done with the PC Admin account. This account is to be closed when updates are completed. NO student should be on the computer when the Admin credentials are used.
18. Laptops should ONLY be plugged into surge protectors….never into a wall socket.
19. Make sure you are completely familiar with the District AUP Policies (pages 1-11)
20. Files should be saved in Google Drive and not on the laptops.
