Dear Parents or Guardians,
Our AWE+SUM camp this year will be Monday June 16, 8 a.m., through Thursday, June 19, 3 p.m. This will be our 10th year to offer the camp!
The mission of the AWE+SUM camp is to show girls how interesting and fun science and math can be. And as 8th graders, they get to experience a college campus so they can start thinking about going to a college or university a few years later.
Westminster completely supports the mission of the program and underwrites many of the costs, and we have several generous donors. These donations allow us to give full scholarships to many girls each year (25 of the 70 girls last year had full scholarships). The cost for the camp is $150, but on the application form, we have asked applicants to tell us what they can afford to pay. We will do our best to provide this experience to girls, regardless of their ability to pay.
And parents, if your employer would be interested in donating to this program, please let them know that the donation would be tax-deductible, and much appreciated!
Diversity is a core part of the identity of Westminster College, and the AWE+SUM camp reflects this philosophy. The camp was originally targeted to help Native American girls, especially those living on reservations, to gain an exposure to secondary education. We also seek to include girls of other ethnicities that are underrepresented in the math and science fields. At the same time, we recognize that all girls can benefit from the experience that this camp offers, and the mix of girls from a variety of backgrounds enriches the experience for all. We wish we could accept everyone who applies, but as we are limited in available spots in this camp, we will initially admit only 2 girls per school. In a second stage, if there are spots available, we may admit more than 2 girls per school.
