  The children will:

  • Continue to learn about basic needs.
  • Identify types of food used by people in the community.

 Why we need food? 

  1. Ask the children to name some of their favorite foods.
  2. Read the poem “I’d Like Some More!”
  3. Ask the children to name some of the food mentioned in the poem.
  4. Ask the children:  Can you name some of the food you see in the pictures? Why we need food? Do you think these meals are healthful, or good for you? Which food is your favorite food? How do people get the foods that they need? What do people use to buy the food they need?
  5. Make a bar graph to compare and contrast  the children’s favorite foods.

Why some families do not have enough food? How can we help them?

 

  1. Remind children that we have been learning about needs and wants.
  2. Call a volunteer to define needs (food, clothing, and shelter) and wants (things would people like to have).
  3. Ask the children to show the need shown on the page. (food)
  4. Tell the children that when shopping for food, families have to make important choices about what to buy.
  5. Have the children look at the meals shown. Ask:Which meal would you choose? Why?
  6. Talk about how some families don’t have enough food to eat.
  7. Ask: Why some families do not have enough food? How can we help them?
  8. Help the children come up with a plan to help needy families.
  9. Have the children come up with some options, such as collecting can goods for a food bank.
  10. Help the children chose the best plan for the class.
  11. Put the plan in use by involving  the parent in our plan.
