J.D. is currently a 13 1/2 year old DMH neutered Black and White male weighing 16.1 lbs.  He is a large boy with big paws.  He has a rare blood type of AB.

He was diagnosed with diabetes in the summer of 2005.  At the time he was 10 years old and weighed 17 lbs.

I had come home from a 2 week vacation to California, where J.D. was being taken care of at home by my boyfriend who was free feeding him.  I came home to find him drinking a lot and urinating a lot.  I took him to a country farm vet and he said he had diabetes, and sold me some blood glucose urin granuals to put in his litter and some Purina Diabetic Mainenance dry and wet cat foods.  He ate the wet cat food for awhile and after about a month developed a distaste for it.  Meanwhile, I was trying to find a vet that could help me, one that seemed to know something about diabetes in cats.  Eventually, I found a vet. that was close by and I was prescribed PZI and he started on 3 Units twice a day 11/05 and kept losing weight and was up to 5.5 Units twice a day by 12/05.

On 12/20/05 J.D. was admitted to the Matthew J. Ryan Veterinary Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania in critical condition for Diabetic Ketoacidousis.  It was discovered that his blood type is AB which is rare.  He stayed at the hospital through Christmas (in which I drove the hour and a half each way, to visit him each and every day) and was released from the hospital on 12/28/05.

His insulin was changed to Humilin N and he was prescribed 4 Units twice a day.

I went back 1 month later for an 8 hour curve at the hospital: 10:00am 148, 12:00pm 195, 2:00pm 470, and 4:00pm 599.  I was told to stay at the same dosage, but to change to 2 feedings per day.

On 01/29/06 his blood glucose was at 80, and the doctor told me that feeding him right then was the correct thing to do.

I was told by the vet. that a blood glucose of 60 or 70 is too low and that he should be seen by a vet. at that level.

I complained that he didn't seem to be doing any better and asked about a possible change of insulin.

I was prescribed Lantus on March 15th of 2006.  We started with 2 Units once a day and his weight at that time was 12.32 lbs.

On 03/23/06 a 24 hour curve was done at the hospital and all I received back was that his high was 465 and his low was 260.  His dose was then changed to 2 Units twice a day.

On 04/18/06 an 8 hour curve was done at my local vet.: 10:00am 358, 12:00pm 366, 1:30pm 348, 3:30pm 296, 5:30pm 282.  His dose was then changed to 3 Units twice a day.

On 05/05/06 an 8 hour curve was done at my local vet.: 9:00am 286, 11:30am 371, 1:30pm 330, 3:30pm 300, 5:00pm 289.  His dose was left the same.

On 06/02/06 a Fructosamine was done with a result of 294 (300 to 400 is good).  Instructions were to not change his dose and his weight was 14.59 lbs.

On about 11/13/06, I was giving him smidget over 3 Units twice a day.

On 12/15/06 a Total Health Plus blood work up was done (all satisfactory), as well as a Fructosamine with a result of 396 (350 to 400 is good) and his weight was 16.70 lbs.  My local vet. told me not to change the insulin dose, but to try to get him off of dry cat food, instead.  My Penn State Vet. Hosp. doctor said his Fructosamine was excellent and not to increase his insulin.

On 01/12/07 I took J.D. to my local vet. because he seemed to be limping.  The doctor said nothing was wrong with his leg, but that I should try to reduce his insulin from 3 Units twice a day to 2 Units twice a day, to 1 Unit twice a day while monitoring his drinking.  If he drinks a lot, then I should go up by 1/2 Unit to see if he drinks normally again.

01/13/07 reduced all dry food and reduced insulin to 2 Units twice a day, as he threw up his dinner.  Blood glucose was 400 on 01/14/07 and 123 the morning of 01/15/07 due to decrease in appetite.

02/07/07 insulin changed to 1 Unit twice a day.

03/01/07 insulin changed to 1 1/2 Units twice a day.

03/31/07 Fructosamine result was 435 (400 to 450 is fair).  Change insulin level from 1 1/2 Units to 1 1/2+ Units twice a day.

04/04/07 insulin changed to 2 Units twice a day.

06/02/07 Fructosamine result was 401 (400 to 450 is fair).
