There is so much we can do to help birds survive:
Shelter:
Birds do not sleep in a nest, but they do need a nest to rear a family! You can buy a box, or make one yourself. Use old wood, and don’t paint it, because paint is toxic to birds.
What to feed hungry birds?
Do feed them:
You can give birds sunflower seeds, fat balls, live or dried mealworms and dried insects. They enjoy cooked, unsalted rice and dry breakfast cereal, preferably unsalted. They are keen on small amounts of cake and robins love grated cheese.
Don’t forget apples, bananas and other fruit.
Don’t feed them
Bread, especially white bread, which fills birds up without providing them with much nutrition.
Salty food, which can dehydrate them.
Milk, which can cause severe stomach upsets (though a small amount of cheese is fine).
Mouldy food, which can cause respiratory problems.
Encourage your friends to feed birds!
