1. Updates for Members

1.1 Research in Learning Technology - submissions suspended, while archive remains available

Research in Learning Technology is ALT’s Open Access online journal. Its publisher, Co-Action, joined Taylor & Francis last autumn. The formal transition of the journal to Taylor & Francis is now complete; due to a large number of unresolved issues, however, the journal is not currently accepting new submissions. The full archive of journal articles remains available and papers already submitted will be processed as normal.

1.2 In memory of Hans Rosling

We are sad to report that Hans Rosling died on 7 February, aged 68, from pancreatic cancer, in Uppsala, Sweden.

1.3 Playful Learning Conference

The second Playful Learning conference, based at Manchester Metropolitan University and organised in conjunction with the ALT Playful Learning SIG (formerly Games and Learning SIG), will take place from 12 to 14 July 2017. The Call for Papers is still open but closes today.

The #ALTC blog brings together news and views from the ALT community and is a popular way to keep in touch with new courses, tools and events from different sectors.

1.6 2017 Call for Proposals open now #altc

The 24th Annual Conference takes place from 5 to 7 September 2017 in Liverpool. The theme this year is ‘Beyond islands of innovation – how Learning Technology became the new norm(al)’.

The Call for Proposals is now open and the submission system will open later this month.

2.1 Call for Papers: Playful Learning Conference, Manchester Metropolitan University, 12 - 14 July 2017

The ethos of this conference, organised in conjunction with the ALT Playful Learning SIG, is to break the traditional conference mould and programme a range of different types of talks and activities, from research paper discussions to live gaming role play events. Submissions in all areas relating to playful learning in adult education, including – but not limited to – higher and further education, playful workplaces, and lifelong learning are welcome. (If you would like to contribute but cannot meet the deadline, please contact Nicola Whitton – n.whitton@mmu.ac.uk – or Alex Moseley – alex.moseley@le.ac.uk – directly.)

2.2 FELTAG SIG webinar: New course design for reflective learning, 22 February 2017, 12.30 - 1.30

2.3 Webinar: CMALT: An academic perspective, 23 February 2017, 12.30 - 1.30

CMALT is the peer-based professional accreditation scheme developed by ALT. This webinar looks at the value and benefits of completing the CMALT process, and of demonstrating a solid and informed understanding of the benefits and constraints of learning technology, as an academic practitioner engaged in teaching and research.

2.4 Webinar: Launching the New Strategy for ALT 2017-2020, 2 March 2017, 12.00 - 1.00

This webinar is free to attend and open to all. The session will explore the new ALT Strategy 2017-2020 and set out priorities for the coming year. Led by Trustees and chief executive Maren Deepwell, it will share the result of the consultation process with Members and highlight related results of ALT's Annual Survey.

2.5 Open Education SIG webinar: OER 17 preview - The Politics of Open, 9 March 2017, 12.30 - 1.30

OER17 will take place in London from 5 to 6 April 2017 and gives all concerned with open education the space to reflect on ‘The Politics of Open’. Conference Co-Chair Josie Fraser provides a preview of the conference and shares the ways in which all can participate and engage with the future of education.

Maha Bali, Associate Professor of Practice at the Centre for Learning and Teaching at the American University in Cairo, will be a keynote speaker at OER17, which takes place from 5 to 6 April 2017 in London. To celebrate Open Education Week, she offers her personal perspectives on the this process, giving us the opportunity to consider how open practice supports open education.

2.9 OER17: The Politics of Open, Resource for London, 5 - 6 April 2017

OER17 is an opportunity for open practitioners, activists, educators and policy makers to come together as a community to reflect on The Politics of Open and to discuss challenges and strengths, priorities, and changes we want to effect. The conference will be chaired by Josie Fraser, social and educational technologist and Wikimedia UK Trustee, and Alek Tarkowski, Director of Centrum Cyfrowe, co-founder and coordinator of Creative Commons Poland.

The World Conference on Computers in Education (WCCE 2017), organised by the International Federation for Information Processing and hosted by the Irish Computer Society, has the theme ‘
