“My Explanation Of How To Free-View Parallel And Cross-eye Stereo Image Pairs”
Parallel image pairs have the left eye image on the left, and the right eye image on the right. It can be hard at first to understand why parallel free-viewing doesn’t just happen automatically. It would seem natural .. your left eye needs to see the left image, and hey .. whadda' you know .. your left eye happens to be on the left side of your head, so ... why doesn’t the image just appear in 3D when you look at it? It has to do with your two lines of sight and how they converge.
Normally when we look at things, our eyes aren’t looking straight ahead, with lines of sight parallel. Our eyes cross slightly, so that our two lines of sight converge on a point.
When you’re trying to look at a stereo pair of images, your eyes want to do what they naturally do - they converge onto a single point. You aren’t seeing both images at the same time, so your brain can’t merge them into a 3D image. The goal is to let your lines of sight run relatively parallel, so that instead of converging, your left eye sees the left image, and your right eye sees the right image. How do we do this?
First of all, when free-viewing parallel images, the size and / or distance of the pair of images will matter. The image can be close to you if it’s small, but must be further away if it’s larger. The point is, your eyes are probably capable of converging, or viewing parallel, but most of us cannot diverge our lines of sight in opposite directions. I find that as long as the pair of images is no more than 7 inches wide, combined, then I can free-view them from about 2 feet away. The smaller the image, the easier it is, so viewing them on a cell phone is generally very easy.
Some people suggest you actually look over the top edge of the image at something far away, and then while holding that focus, lift the image up into your line of sight. But personally, that never worked for me. As soon as I'd look down at the image, my eyes would re-focus on it, converging like normal.
For me, what works is to simply relax my eyes as if lost in a daze, lost in thought, zoning out … Earth to Ted .. Is there anybody home in there? - That’s the way I think about it. Your eyes are open, but they’re not looking at anything. When you let your eyes gloss over like that, your vision gets blurry and you may think your eyes are crossing, but they’re not. They’re actually assuming parallel lines. That’s why zoning out is often referred to as ‘staring into space’ - When you stare at something distant, your lines of sight run almost parallel. That’s another thing some people do when free-viewing, is try to imagine that they are looking ‘through the image’ at something far away. Once the lines of sight run parallel, each of your eyes begins seeing the image on its respective side, and your brain begins to ‘fuse’ them into a single 3D image. You’ll have the experience of seeing a third image ‘grow’ between the two original images, and when it stretches to the same width as the other two, it should ‘lock into focus’ and appear 3D. This is called ‘fusing’ the images. You’ll still see the left and right images on the sides, but once you’ve fused the images you’ll be free to relax and enjoy the 3D as long as you like, freely looking around at all parts of the 3D image.
Now, some people simply can't do it, for medical reasons, or whatever. But I think most people can. It's just a matter of learning what to do, and practicing. When you're trying to do it, make sure you're not crossing your eyes. Eventually you’ll learn to recognize if you’re using the wrong viewing method (trying to parallel-view a cross-eye image, or cross-view a parallel image.) The depth is literally inverted - foreground objects are in the background, and background objects are in the foreground. But in the beginning you may not realize that’s what you’re seeing. I understood very little of this at first, but was free-viewing images with ease (Parallel viewing, although I didn’t know the difference). When I would unwittingly parallel free-view images intended for cross-eye, they’d look strange to me, but I didn’t recognize them as having inverted depth, I just assumed the 3D was done poorly somehow. Others have shared that they had this same experience when they started out.
Another way to tell the difference is, crossing your eyes takes effort. While not necessarily painful, it feels like a small strain. But parallel viewing is not a strain at all, because all you’re doing is relaxing your eyes. Yet another way to tell the difference is, watch which way the images move. If you're crossing your eyes, you will see the images drift apart from each other .. two to either side .. you'll see two images drifting to the left, and two images drifting to the right (If you go too far you'll end up with four images side by side). When parallel-viewing the opposite happens - you see the images drift toward each other and overlap. At first you may find that you can get them to drift a little bit, so they overlap a little, but they won’t fully merge. If so, try making the pair of images smaller (if they’re on a screen), or moving further back from them. Then just keep relaxing your vision, keep consciously trying NOT to look at the image or focus on it. Let your eyes do the work for you. It will come as a surprise when they fuse, because you think it requires effort, but your eyes do it on their own when you just relax.
Cross-eye free-viewing (aka ‘convergent’ viewing) described in YouTube videos (such as https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zBa-bCxsZDk … and …https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cvShotHl1As) is done when the images are swapped (right / left instead of left / right). Cross-eye viewing has one thing over parallel viewing, in that you can cross-view images of any size, whereas with parallels the image must be rather small. [Note: Both cross-eye and parallel free-viewing are superior to viewing anaglyphs, not only because no glasses or device are needed, but you’re able to enjoy full color images]
To free-view cross-eye, you need to be able to cross your eyes in a controlled way, slowly and precisely, just enough that you see three equal-size images, and then hold your eyes at that point and allow that center image to fuse and become 3D. Once it does, you should be able to freely look around any part of the image at will, for as long as you want. Although you’ll feel a slight strain, in most cases it won’t be painful, and according to eye experts, you can’t damage your eyes by crossing them. It only gives your eyes some healthy exercise.
If you’re having trouble viewing cross-eye, there is a trick you can use. Hold a finger up between you and the image, and stare at your finger, not the image. This forces your eyes to cross. You can see the image behind your finger, but keep focusing on your finger. Move it forward or backward and notice the images separating. When there are three images of equal width, try to hold your focus and lower your finger now, and allow your eyes to settle on the center image of the three, and it should lock in (fuse) and become 3D.
Whether you’re free-viewing parallel or cross-eye, remember to keep your head level with the image. If you’re having trouble fusing them, and you notice that as they overlap, one side is higher or lower than the other, tilt your head accordingly to line them up. With luck, soon you’ll be casually free-viewing stereo images on your computer, and in your favorite stereoscopic books and newsletters. - Ted Whitten

Stereo framing is a fascinating effect in which the photo or image itself is uniquely cropped so that the border of the image takes a 3D shape. It can be bent or twisted to seemingly wind around the objects in the image, or used to lessen the offensiveness of a window violation. With patience and a lot of effort, stereo framing can be done by hand in any photo editing program, but fortunately there’s a free program called Stereomasken which makes it much easier.

If you’re interesting in learning this art, please join the Facebook group "Let's Convert 2D Images to 3D!"
..and the Flickr Group “3D Stereo Conversion” - (the ‘Discussions’ section of the group is very helpful)
The late, great Ray Zone was a pioneer in the field of 2D-3D conversion. He was largely self-taught, and did his early conversions with actual, physical cutting, arranging and pasting images together. Later he learned to do them digitally. He did the conversion work on numerous published comic books, and was a prolific author on various 3D subjects as well. His web site, while no longer active, can still be viewed in the internet archive: https://web.archive.org/web/20150214181000/http://www.ray3dzone.com/ ..and here is an archive of his original web site: https://web.archive.org/web/19981202200140/http://home.earthlink.net/~r3dzone/
2D-3D conversion can be done a variety of ways, and almost no two people will do conversions exactly the same way. Some use depth maps, some use a more manual method of cutting and arranging objects, or simply selecting and shifting objects (or portions of objects), some ‘skew’ or manipulate the perspective or shape of selected objects. Still others use different methods, different software and tools. Any of these can be used to convert an entire image with differing results, but the best conversion artists will take the time to learn a variety of methods and use each when a particular image - or object within an image - is most suited for that method, or combination of methods. Perhaps, for example, a human form in a photo will be best converted with a depth map, while many other objects can simply be selected and shifted, and the background layer can simply have a perspective skew applied. Learn each technique and the benefits and pitfalls of each.
In this 30-minute video tutorial I explain the ‘Select-and-Shift’ method (aka “The Pixel Shift Method”, “The Manual Method”) I have often used, which involves creating a series of ‘depth slices’ and shifting them, with the goal of creating a left eye image, and using the original image the right eye. In the tutorial I use Adobe Photoshop Elements, no depth map, and no layers (although I’ve sometimes used depth maps, and I do encourage the use of layers now). This video is essentially a condensed version of the workshop I gave at the 2017 NSA 3D-Con / ISU Congress, in Irvine, CA. https://www.facebook.com/groups/681686041953226/permalink/1280790052042819/

NOTE - Be aware that there is software being marketed (and apps) that claim to be able to automatically convert 2D video to 3D. While I hesitate to make a blanket statement that all of these are frauds or scams, please be encouraged to give careful thought before spending any money on these. Video conversion that looks even reasonably satisfactory is done manually, frame-by-frame, is expensive, and both labor and time intensive. While it is true that there are algorithms for so-called ‘automatic’ conversion out there (such as those built into many 3D TVs that have an automatic 2D-3D mode), such algorithms have a high margin of error, and rely on the presence of depth cues such as motion, which are absent in still photos. Extended viewing of video like this, where objects are frequently placed incorrectly in the depth space often results in eye strain and headaches. This is not true 2D-3D conversion. And software sold as “2D-3D video converters” often don’t do anything more than a simple perspective skew with anaglyph coloring. Don’t be tricked! Before making a purchase, consult the 3D community for advice on Facebook, Yahoo, or any of the forums.

The preservation and / or restoration of vintage stereoscopic images is important work. As photos age they fade, and gradually vital details are lost, eventually forever unless the image is scanned and / or restored. Spearheading this work in the 3D community are Bob Furmanek and the good folks at The 3-D Film Archive, but many others are also making strides. We hope more will take an interest in this important endeavor.
Preservation refers to the scanning and digital archiving of images as they are. Restoration refers to the arduous and painstaking, yet very skill-oriented process of touching up images - removing dust and scratches, fingerprints, stains, water or sun damage, correcting fading colors, and in every other way trying to return an image to its former glory.
Restoring a stereoview or any stereo image shares much in common with the restoration of a 2D photo, however with some important additional concerns. Images must be aligned as accurately as possible, which is best done with Masuji Suto’s free software StereoPhoto Maker. And when making any corrections, especially with the cloning brush or paintbrush, careful attention must be paid to both the left and right chips to make sure articles of the original photo are not being erased. Any disparity you introduce between the left and right views will cause annoying retinal rivalries.
There is an excellent book by David Richardson (who has done extensive work restoring hundreds of vintage stereoviews) called ‘Restoring and Tinting Vintage Images’. While the primary focus of the book is restoring and tinting in general, there are sections devoted to the particular concerns of restoring stereoscopic images - http://www.amazon.com/Restoring-Tinting-Vintage-Images-Richardson/dp/1479375136

The restoration of faded anaglyph images, such as Golden Age comic books, requires a keen eye and a thorough familiarity with the various color-adjustment tools and features of Photoshop, GIMP, or whatever photo editing software you use. The red / cyan (or red / green, as the case may be) must be delicately and precisely enhanced and corrected, which though it may sound like one, is no easy task.

Before restoring View-Master reel images, they must be scanned with a transparency scanner (one with not only a lighted bed, but also a lighted lid) at a very high DPI. They are very small images, after all. Once scanned, they must be aligned in SPM (StereoPhoto Maker), and just like with stereoviews, restored with careful attention to both the left and right eye to avoid causing disparities / retinal rivalries.
You will save yourself many hours of touch-up work if, before even scanning the reels, you take the time to clean the reels themselves. Most View-Master reels are paper, and as paper ages, tiny paper fibers, almost invisible to the naked eye, fall away and clutter the film chips. You’ll see them big as the nose on your face after you scan!
Bob Shotsberger wrote an article for the May/June 2015 issue of the NSA magazine Stereo World, (Vol 40 No 6 pg 20) about scanning View-Master reels and un-cut film. Back issues of Stereo World can be purchased from the NSA.

Bob Shotsberger wrote an article for the July/Aug 2013 issue of Stereo World (Volume 39, No 1, Page 38) on the subject of "Making your first Stereo 3D Video Disc".
You do have several choices for taking 3D pictures. In the beginning you might just use your 2D camera or cell phone (preferably with the i3Dsteroid app) to take what we call cha-cha photos (two individual photos, one for each eye, moving a few inches to the side between shots). You could buy a cell phone that takes 3D pictures, such as the HTV EVO 3D, or buy a 3D camera that has two lenses, such as the FujiFilm Real 3D W3. If you own a DSLR you might consider the option of buying a beam splitter such as those sold by Loreo, which attach to the front of your lens and use mirrors to split the image into two halves, one for the left eye and one for the right eye. Or, if you’re ready for the next level, you could buy two identical cameras, mount them together (preferably on a slide bar to allow variable stereo bases), and synchronize the shutters to fire together. Choices, choices.
Cha-Cha photography can be done with any normal camera. In short, it’s just a matter of taking two photos, one for the left eye image, and one for the right eye image. The two photos must be taken from two slightly different horizontal perspectives, to simulate the two views seen by your eyes. The distance you move between the two photos (the stereo base) can vary greatly, depending on preference, and the desired amount of depth in the stereo image. However, for most people, in most situations, it is generally considered best to use a stereo base similar to the average human interocular separation (the distance between our eyes), so around 2 to 3 inches. One popular and simple way to achieve this is to steady your camera in preparation to take the left eye photo. With your feet only few inches apart, put your body weight onto your left leg and take the photo. Keep the camera perfectly still and shift your body weight to your right leg, then take the right eye photo. After taking the pair of photos, you’ll need to use some sort of software, either on your phone, tablet, or computer, to make sure the photos are perfectly aligned, and to combine them into a parallel view, cross-eye view, or anaglyph.
Check out Michael Beech’s Kindle eBook “Mastering the 3D Photography Cha-Cha: How to Make Better 3D with Single Lens Cameras” on Amazon.com.
If you choose to take pictures with your smartphone or tablet, we recommend the app i3DSteroid (for Apple iOS devices) or 3DSteroid (for Android devices), which are essentially simpler versions of Masuji Suto’s excellent, free, PC or Mac software, StereoPhoto Maker. Using i3DSteroid / 3DSteroid taking the pictures is easier (as you take the second photo, a semi-transparent shadow of the first image overlays it, making it easier to keep them identically framed and horizontally aligned). Once the photos are taken, the app can automatically align the photos precisely, and lets you easily save the 3D image in any number of formats. When using the app to view stereo pairs, individually or as a slideshow, you can switch between parallel, cross-eye, or anaglyph etc.

Do you know more than the average Joe about something? Don’t hold it in and let that knowledge collect dust until you’re pushing up daisies and the rest of us are still scratching our heads going “I sure wish I knew how to do…”. Making a tutorial these days has become simpler than reaching around to scratch an itch on your backside. Do what I did to make this document... Just go to https://docs.google.com/, choose a template (just pick any of them, really) and start typing. As soon as you just choose that template, your tutorial is already saved and stored, and can be shared with the world (if you so choose, although .. if you’d go ahead and actually put some information in your tutorial, that’d be greeeeeat.). If you don’t believe me, close down your window and reopen it, or open it on your phone or tablet for that matter, and there it is, waiting for you to pick up where you left off. What could be easier? No need to worry about saving. After every keystroke the document is automatically saved, and it remains private until you’re ready to share it. And even after you share it, no one else can alter it unless you give them permission. You can add text and images with ease, and alter the layout and formatting to whatever degree of complexity you want, or you can just keep typing. It’s entirely up to you. Now get started!

Trummy - 2D-to-3D photo conversions at an extremely low price (2.99 GBP, and even less for multiple images). However, buyer beware … quality 2D-3D conversion simply cannot be done this cheaply or quickly. See their example images. These are simple ‘cardboard’-like conversions (flat surfaces over flat surfaces, in a rotoscoped manner) with almost no attention to detail, and no cleanup work done to fill in background areas exposed when objects are shifted / smeared. As long as you understand this, you certainly can’t beat the price. - http://www.trummy.com/en/pricing

Raymond “The Wagman” Desjardins (Toronto, Canada) - Although no longer active in the field, Ray has done many amazing 2D-3D conversions. I’ve been working on compiling a YouTube playlist off all the best true (stereoscopic 3D) VR videos, both 180 and 360. The name of the playlist is “3D VR Favorites 360 & 180 Stereoscopic”. If you have a PSVR, Oculus, Vive, Windows Mixed Reality, or any VR headset with YouTube access, add this playlist to your YouTube “library”, and let me know if you find any great videos to add. But please, no flat 2D 360 videos, which are too often called “VR” when they’re really not true VR. https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLuetrp1QqJdZOy27AkwT0gy5e_wOARCsl
I do have a separate playlist for 360 videos which are NOT 3D … https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLuetrp1QqJdbx8kxklKV5VZJ0vtCS-y0E
3D content on YouTube can be enjoyed on your 3D TV, as long as you have a device to run the YouTube app, like Roku, PS3, PS4, or perhaps even your TV itself. Just find the video you want, turn on 3D Mode on your TV, and make sure the correct format is set (usually Side-by-Side Left / Right, but there will be the occasional exception to the rule).
