Easter: In a Biblical Church Family Traditional Way

by Pastor Mark Brady

“Consequently, faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word about Christ.” Romans 10:17

Recently someone mentioned to me that they had heard that in the previous church where Jan and I served that we usually held an Easter Sunrise Service. We most certainly did. The annual service was actually an ecumenical event hosted by our four church Ministerial Association. It was held at 6:00 a.m. regardless of what time the sun rose on Easter morning. A time or two we would be back home from the service a good thirty minutes before Old Sol broke the horizon. I often wondered why the six o’clock hour became the traditional time for this service? There would be no changing it though, as I once suggested might happen. Even before being part of our previous church’s tradition of observing Easter at sunrise, the church where Jan grew up and where I became a member after our marriage traditionally held an Easter Sunrise Service at 7:30 a.m..  Having attended a Sunrise Service every Easter for the past thirty-four years (and a few before that) and being together with Jan and our daughters for most of them, I guess it is safe to say that attending Easter Sunrise Service is a Brady Family Tradition. “Tradition”, if hearing the word puts a sour taste in your mouth, as it often does mine when it comes to the Church Calendar, you may be encouraged to know this; a certain dictionary I use says that it could be proper to use the word “belief” in place of the word “tradition” at times. When I hear “Easter Sunrise Service is a Brady Family Belief” instead of “Tradition”, this not only sounds better to me but actually expresses better the faith involved in doing something time and time again, rather than that something is being done again much because it always has been done in the past.

Coming to worship here at First Baptist Kittanning after sunrise on Easter Day will break “tradition” for the Brady Family come April 16, 2017 but it will have absolutely no effect on the “belief” that had put us in a pew very early once a year for over thirty of them. Easter Service 2017 will be a “Brady Family Belief” and I hope it will be the same for anyone reading this..

Easter is probably my favorite day of the year, if I have one. I actually wake up with a great sense of anticipation and expectation as it begins to dawn on me that we followers of Jesus Christ are going to spend an entire day celebrating, and, in a sense, “reenacting” by way of the Scriptures, the events of the first day of our Lord’s resurrected life among us!

As I ponder “Easter belief”, a Children’s Message of a few years ago comes to mind, one where I had the kids gather around three large crosses that had been set up in the church sanctuary for the Lenten season and I talked with them about the crucifixion. During the message I said these words (with really no emphasis), “Next Sunday we will celebrate Jesus rising from the dead.”, without a prompt of any sort, a 3 year old girl by the name of Ella jumped up into the air with her arms raised and shouted “WHA HOO!”. The entire congregation chuckled and at the same time, like myself, were overwhelmed by the awesome exuberance of this child’s faith. We Christians often use the term “childlike faith”, but, thinking about Ella; I don’t want faith “like” Ella’s.  I want Ella’s faith. Where has it come from?  How has she gotten the message?

This coming Easter Day, as we, God’s children “Wha Hoo!” the fact of the Resurrection, let us do so (if it is true of us) with an understanding that our celebration stems from a Family Belief and not just a tradition, as we normally connote what that word means.  In fact, knowing many of us do not come to Easter with a deep seated “family belief”, let's say we celebrate Easter as a “Biblical Church Family Belief”?  I add the word “Biblical” with the other words as a reminder not to be separating Easter from the Bible, or the Bible from the Church, or the Church from the Family, or the Family from the tradition (I mean “Belief”).

When I consider the simple faith of a child, that causes one to leap into the air for joy and shout out with expressive voice of praise, I must pause to consider what the message is that she has received and how she has received it. I know it came from hearing, for this is how faith comes (Romans 10:17).  The message she heard is the Gospel of Jesus Christ (See 1 Corinthians 15).   How did she hear it?  In a Biblical Church Family Traditional (Believable) Way!

May the Lord bless us all with an Easter like this!

HAPPY EASTER!

WHA HOO!
