De László is known to have made five visits to Venice: in 1889 for a period of study cut short by illness, 1907 when his portrait of his wife Lucy with a Violin won the Gold Medal at the Venice Biennale, and on holiday in 1923, 1926 and 1930. Stylistically, the present picture can be dated to the 1920s or 30s but there is insufficient evidence to suggest a specific date.

The artist rediscovered his love for painting en plein air during his travels in Algeria and Italy in the early months of 1923. Other landscapes or figure studies made at this time include: The Orange Seller [9165], The Gardens of the Villa Borghese [11649], and A Man from Biskra [11043].
