APPLEGATE, Velma R. “Skip” KINGSPORT – Velma "Skip" R. Applegate, 67, 205 Church Hill Drive, went to be with the Lord at 10:45 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 28, 2004, at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center. Velma was born in Abingdon and came to Kingsport in 1967. She had worked at the Moose and VFW and was a member of the Women of the Moose and VFW Auxiliary. She was of the Baptist faith. Preceding her in death were her parents, one son, Robert Adams, two brothers, Gene Roark and Pete Roark, and one sister, Vivian Roark. Surviving are her husband, Bill Applegate, Kingsport; one daughter, Linda Chico, Rogersville; four grandsons, John Adams, Doug Adams and Jeff Adams, all of Kingsport, and Gary Adams, Knoxville; two stepchildren, Butch Applegate and Allen Applegate, both of Kingsport; nine grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; three sisters, Ruth Singleton and Jerry Griffin, both of Abingdon, and Barbara Frazier, Atlanta; and several nieces and nephews. Calling hours are from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Homes, Fall Branch. Services will be conducted at 8 p.m. Thursday in the Fall Branch Chapel with Clifford John Pierson officiating. Graveside services will be conducted at 12 noon Friday at Oak Hill Memorial Park. BAKER, Brenda L. BLOUNTVILLE – Brenda L. Baker, age 45, went to be with her Lord in Heaven. Brenda was born in Bristol Virginia, but had lived in Sullivan County most of her life. She was a daughter of the late Worley and Sue (Wolford) Baker. She was a member of the Lighthouse Bible Church and graduated from Central High School. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, Mary Marie Baker, who passed away in 2002. Brenda is survived by her brother and sister in law, Larry and Patty Baker; her niece, Sarah Baker; her nephews, Daniel and David Baker; and her grandmother, Fanny Baker, all of Blountville. She is survived by several aunts, uncles and cousins. Calling hours will be 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at the East Lawn Funeral Home. BARKER, Nela Jewel Lane KINGSPORT – Nela Jewel Lane Barker, age 92, a resident of Brookhaven Manor, went to be with the Lord Thursday, Dec. 23, 2004, at Holston Valley Medical Center. Mrs. Barker was born Jan. 25, 1912, a daughter of the late Everett C. and Mary Elizabeth Leonard Lane, and has made her home in the Bristol area all of her life. She was a homemaker, the widow of Dewey W. Baker and was a member of Willow Branch Missionary Baptist Church. Survivors include her sons, Cecil Barker and wife Jean and Howard Barker and wife Treva; 11 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted at 6 p.m. Monday, Dec. 27, 2004, in the Weaver Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Charles Sherfey officiating. Burial will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. in Barkers Cemetery. BOLLING, William B. “Dub” BRISTOL, Tenn. – William B. "Dub" Bolling, age 80, went to be with the Lord, Sunday, Dec. 26, 2004. A native and lifelong resident of the Bristol area, he was a son of the late David C. Sr. and Florence Brown Bolling. He was a member of Woodlawn Baptist Church. Mr. Bolling was a former member of the Bristol Men's Bowling Association and was an avid bowler. Dub loved all sports, especially football. Mr. Bolling was preceded in death by his brothers, David C. Bolling Jr. and Noah Bolling. Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Cecile McElyea Bolling; one son, Billy Bolling; a daughter, Angela Bolling; two sisters, Ann Lawson of Bristol Tennessee and Nell Simerly of Knoxville, Tenn.; and two brothers, Walt Bolling of Bristol Tennessee and Jack Bolling of Arcadia, Okla. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 28, 2004, in Glenwood Cemetery Mausoleum Chapel with Rev. Steve Playl officiating. BOWERS, Robert E. “Bob” BLOUNTVILLE – Robert E. "Bob" Bowers, age 85, of 697 Big Hollow Road, passed away Friday, Dec. 24, 2004, in the Bristol Regional Medical Center. Mr. Bowers was born on Feb. 10, 1919, in Sullivan County, Tenn., to the late Bob and Susan Hatcher Bowers. He had lived all his life in the Bluff City area, was a farmer, and was a former employee of TVA Building South Holston Dam. Mr. Bowers is survived by: his wife of 56 years, Mary Ann Vance Bowers; children, Gene Bowers and wife Donna, Wanda Oliver and husband Carl, Kathy Smith and husband David, Ricky Bowers and wife Margaret, Betty Rumley, Teresa Bowers and Manuel Bowers and wife Lisa; one sister, Betty Lee Oliver; one brother, Johnny Bowers; seven grandchildren, Natasha Morrell, Michael Smith, Heather Bowers, Danielle Bowers, Bradley Bowers, Nikki Bowers and Joey Bowers; two great- grandchildren, Dillon and Payton Morrell; and several nieces and nephews. CAMPBELL, Noleta M. Booher BLUFF CITY – Noleta M. Booher Campbell, age 82, of 409 Boyd Road, (Hickory Tree Community), went to be with the Lord Friday, Dec. 24, 2004, at Bristol Nursing Home. Mrs. Campbell was born June 6, 1922, a daughter of the late Arthur and Ida Ketron Booher, and had made her home in the Bristol area all of her life. She was the widow of George Campbell, attended Shakesville Church of Christ, was a homemaker and former employee of Bristol Door. Survivors include three brothers, Armond Booher and wife Miralda, Lestol Booher and wife LaWanda, and W.C. Booher and wife Callie; special nephew, Jerry Booher; special niece, Jane Cox; several other nieces and nephews; special cousin, Viola Blevins; and several other cousins. Funeral services will be conducted at the graveside in Odum Cemetery Tuesday, Dec. 28, 2004, at 11 a.m. with Minister Roger Phelps officiating. CARRIER, Bruce W. BLUFF CITY – Bruce W. Carrier, age 73, of 300 Big Spring Road, (Hickory Tree Community), went to be with the Lord Sunday, Dec. 26, 2004. Bruce was born March 15, 1931, a son of the late Roy Sr. and Lennie Osborne Carrier, and has made his home in the Hickory Tree Community all of his life. Mr. Carrier was a U.S. Army veteran. He was a retired deputy property assessor for Sullivan County. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Herbert and Roy Jr. Carrier. Survivors include: wife of 31 years, Linda Guinn Carrier; daughter, Donna Carrier; brother, Obia Lee Carrier and wife Betty; several nieces and nephews; and sister-in-law, Livana Carrier. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, Dec. 29, 2004, at 11 a.m. in the Weaver Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Jim Manis officiating. Interment will follow at Shipley Cemetery. CHRISTIAN, Mary Alice BRISTOL, Tenn. – Mary Alice Christian, age 91, 558 Booher Drive, died Dec. 23, 2004, in Hillside Manor, Kingsport. She was a native of Sullivan County, Tenn., daughter of the late John H. and Lydia Dowell Offield. She was a retired seamstress for H. P. King Company and a member of East Bristol Baptist Church. Survivors include a daughter, Patsy Edgell and her husband David of Kingsport; sister, Goldie Trivette, Bristol Tennessee; brother, J.W. Offield, Bristol Tennessee; grandson, John Edgell, Kingsport; and granddaughter, Sarah Edgell, Kingsport. Graveside services were conducted 2 p.m. Monday in Florence Union Cemetery by Bill Carrier. CLARK, Mrs. Mildred Sue (Phoebe), daughter of the late William and Mary Roller, was born Sept. 10, 1930, in Bristol Tennessee. She went home to be with the Lord Dec. 30, 2004, at Wellmont Hospital in Bristol, Tennessee. Mrs. Clark has resided in Bristol all of her life. She was a member and attended Mt. Carmel New Life Gospel Church, where she was one of the mothers of the church. She was employed by the Bristol Boys and Girls Club, where she worked faithfully for over 14 years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Clark Sr., and one daughter, Sandra (P-Nut) Tucker. Her survivors include one son, Robert M. Clark Jr., of Atlanta; three daughters, Ramona O. Simmons, Marzetta O. Burks and Mrs. Veda (John) Delaney, all of Bristol Virginia; nine grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends. Funeral services for Mrs. Mildred Sue (Phoebe) Clark will be in the Mt. Carmel New Life Gospel Church Wednesday, Jan. 5, 2005, with visitation at 11 a.m. and the services following at 12 noon with Pastor Ann Johnson officiating.

Raymond McLemore Colgrove Jr., age 54, of 706 Boligee St., were held Thursday, Dec. 23, 2004, at 2:30 p.m. at Boligee Presbyterian Church with Rev. Daniel Coleman and Rev. Kenneth Hill officiating and Kidd-Robbins Funeral Directors of Demopolis directing. Rev. Colgrove died Wednesday, Dec. 22, 2004, at his home. The family received friends at Boligee Presbyterian Church one hour prior to the service time. Burial will follow at Draper's Valley Presbyterian Cemetery in Draper, Va., with graveside services at 11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 27, 2004, with Revs. Tom Sullivan, Larry Ball and Dan Foreman officiating. Survivors include his loving wife of 16 years, Frances Wood Colgrove of Eutaw; parents, Mr. and Mrs. Raymond McLemore Colgrove Sr., of Boligee; two sisters, Judi Colgrove King and her husband Chris, of Aliceville, and Melanie Colgrove Guy of Plantation City, Fla.; three brothers, Edmund Colgrove Sr., Joel Colgrove Sr. and his wife Jayne, and Reid Colgrove and his wife Cindy, all of Boligee; and a host of nieces and nephews. Rev. Colgrove was the presiding minister at Boligee Presbyterian Church, where he served the past three years and prior to moving to Eutaw. He had served in several churches in East Tennessee. CRAFT, James Thomas, age 78, formerly of Bristol, went to be with the Lord Wednesday, Dec. 29, 2004, at the High Point Regional Hospital, High Point, N.C. Mr. Craft was a native of Wise, but had spent most of his life in the Bristol area. He was of the Baptist faith and a U.S. Navy veteran, where he served during World War II, and a member of the Patton-Crosswhite VFW Post 6975. Survivors include his children, Jim Craft and wife Anita of Freeland, Wash.; Sharon Craft of Reno, Nev., Danette Cullop and husband Jim of High Point, Mickey Craft, Eddie Craft, Rickey Craft, Jerry Craft and wife Kathy and Tim Craft and wife Kim, all of Greensboro, N.C., and Yvonne Cruz and husband Jamie of Lakeland, Fla.; sisters, Joyce Sims of Lancaster, Calif., and Mert Cox of Bristol, Tennessee;, brothers, Rudy Craft of Bristol Virginia, and Allen Craft, Don Craft and Bill Craft all of Anderson, S.C.; 10 grandchildren; three great-granddaughters; and several nieces and nephews. DENTON, Martha Victoria, age 94, formerly of Bristol Virginia, died Saturday, Dec. 25, 2004, in St. Joseph Hospital, East, in Lexington, Ky., after a long illness. Mrs. Denton was a long-time member of Belle Meadows Baptist Church, Bristol Virginia. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Cecil Denton. Survivors include two daughters, Wanda Elkins of Lexington and Charlotte Jones of Culpeper, Va.; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. DOAN, Cora Mae Johnson BRISTOL, Tenn. – Cora Mae Johnson Doan, 89, passed away Thursday, Dec. 23, 2004, at Bristol Regional Medical Center. She was born in Washington County, Tenn., a daughter of the late Dave and Elsie Johnson, and lived in Erwin before moving to Bristol in 1939. She was a member of Anderson Street United Methodist Church, where she taught Sunday School, served Meals on Wheels and was a member of the United Methodist Women. She was retired from the Bristol Tennessee School System Food Service. She was preceded in death by her husband, William W. "Woody" Doan, a sister, Pauline Collins, and her brothers, Jim, Henry, Albert, Andrew and Charlie Johnson. Survivors include a daughter, Louise Doan Harlan and her husband Ralph of Bristol; a son, William W. Doan Jr. and his wife Patricia of Knoxville, Tenn.; two granddaughters, Karen Harlan and Julie Harlan and her husband Doug Ezzell; seven great-grandchildren; a sister, Julia Elizabeth Johnson of Bristol; sister-in-law, Shirley Johnson of California; and several nieces and nephews. DOWELL, Robert Edward BRISTOL, Tenn. – Robert Edward Dowell, 71, died Saturday, Dec. 25, 2004, at Bristol Regional Medical Center. He was a lifelong resident of Bristol, a son of the late Wiley and Pauline Henley Dowell, and attended Bristol Tennessee High School. He was retired following a 39-year career as agent and staff manager with Home Beneficial Life Insurance Company and was a member of Open Door Baptist Church. Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Helen Joyce "Bobbie" Dowell; sons, Steven Edward Dowell and his wife Laura Sue, Michael Allen Dowell and his wife Robin, Mark David Dowell and his wife Tena, and Greg Patrick Dowell; four grandchildren, Brian Dowell, Meygan Dowell, Kody Dowell and Jamie Dowell; a brother, Jack B. Dowell; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a brother, Eugene "Speedy" Dowell, and a grandson, Gabriel Brant Dowell. GILLIAM, Danny Ray “Dan” BLUFF CITY – Danny Ray "Dan" Gilliam, age 50, passed away on Dec. 29, 2004, at Johnson City Medical Center. He had lived in the Bristol area for the last 18 years and was the owner of Transworld Transmissions in Kingsport. He was preceded in death by his father, Lark Gilliam. HARGRAVES, Martha Ann Leslie Brown, a former resident of Edgemont Towers, Bristol, Tenn., died Saturday, Dec. 25, 2004 in Wellmont Hospice House. She was a native of Bristol Virginia and daughter of the late Florence Crowell Leslie and Cleveland Leslie. She and her sister were the first twins born in the Kings Mountain Hospital. She was a 26-year employee of Raytheon and a member of Euclid Avenue Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Alfred Champ Hargraves, in 1983, and a sister, Evelyn Leslie Jones, in 1970. She is survived by a son, Jerry and his wife Denise of North Port, Fla.; daughter, Linda Leslie of Marietta, Ga.; grandson, Noel and his wife Tammy; great-grandsons, Derek and Dylon Brown of North Port; twin sister, Betty Jane Leslie Spicer of Miami; and brothers, Joseph C. Leslie and wife Mary of Bristol Virginia, and Charles Robert Leslie and wife Edith of Kingsport. Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Tuesday in Weaver Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. HARRIS, Raymond Eugene BRISTOL, Va. – Mr. Raymond Eugene Harris, age 80, passed away Saturday, Dec. 25, 2004, at the NHC Healthcare Center in Bristol. Born on July 12, 1924, in Russell County, Va., Raymond was a son of the late Tanner Harris and Lula Florence Monk Harris. He had lived most of his life in the Bristol Virginia area. He was preceded in death by his wife Doris Virginia Counts Harris, and was a member of Central Christian Church. Raymond was a retired salesman. He had been employed by Valleydale Meats for many years and retired from the Hamilton Meat Company in Johnson City, Tenn. Raymond was a World War II veteran, having served in the U.S. Navy. Survivors include a daughter, Deborah Morrell and husband Curtis of Bristol Tennessee; a son, Jerry Harris and wife Carolyn of Bristol Virginia; three grandchildren, Justin Morrell, Allison Morrell and Catherine Harris; four brothers, Charles Harris and wife Helen, Henry Harris and wife Peggy, Don Harris and wife Betty, and Jack Harris and wife Linda; a sister-in-law, Mary Helen Counts Dodson; and several nieces and nephews. Mr. McRae was born on March 12, 1917, in Alberta, Canada, a son of the late William and Emma McRae. Mr. McRae had lived in the Bristol area for the past three months, coming from Owls Head, Maine. Mr. McRae was a veteran, having served with the Royal Canadian Air Force. He was a research scientist, employed by Rohm and Haas, in Springhouse, Pa. Mr. McRae was a member of the Lakeview Orthodox Presbyterian Church, in Rockport, Maine. POBST, Hadley Armistead BRISTOL, Tenn. – Hadley Armistead Pobst, age 77, went to be with the Lord Monday, Dec. 27, 2004. Hadley was born Jan. 10, 1927, in Tazewell, Va. He has been a resident of Bristol for the last 50 years. Mr. Pobst served in the Army during World War II. He was elder emeritus at Edgemont Presbyterian Church. Mr. Pobst taught mathematics in area schools, was assistant professor at Virginia Highlands Community College until his retirement in 1990 and was a member of Bristol Organization of Model Builders. He loved the Lord, his family, the outdoors and building and flying model airplanes. Mr. Roark was born on March 11, 1926, to the late Roby and Julie Roark. A veteran of the U.S. Navy, he served in the Southern Pacific and also on Wake Island. He was a carpenter's mate third class (CB) V6USNR SV and was also a member of the Sacred Order of the Golden Dragon. He was retired from Hayesfield Nursery, a former pastor, loving husband and grandfather. Survivors are his wife of 58 years, Lilly Roark; a daughter, Joanne Porter and husband Edward Porter of Shady Valley, Tenn.; and two sons, Roger Roark and wife Ruth of Elizabethton, Tenn., and Roby Roark and wife Totsie of Bristol Tennessee. SADLER, Dorothy "Dot" Briscoe, age 87, formerly of Harriman, Tenn., went to be with the Lord, Sunday, Dec. 26, 2004. She was a native of Knoxville, Tenn., and graduated from the University of Tennessee in 1939, with a B.S. degree in nutrition. She was dietitian for the Girl Scout Camps in Townsend and for St. Mary's Hospital in Knoxville, before moving to Harriman to become the school dietitian in 1940. She then became an educator and, during her years of teaching, had the distinction of having taught in every school in the Harriman system. She was actively involved with the Roane Literary Council in teaching adults to read. She also served 12 years as a member of the Harriman School Board and was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Harriman for over 70 years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles L. Sadler Sr. Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Judy and Oles Miller of Bristol Tennessee; son and daughter-in-law, John C. and Margaret Sadler of Metairie, La., and sons, Braxton L. SHUMAKER, Peggy Peters  BRISTOL, Tenn. – Peggy Peters Shumaker, age 75, went to be with the Lord, Friday, Dec. 24, 2004, at her residence. Mrs. Shumaker was a former member of the Maple Hills Garden Club. She was a member of Blountville Christian Church, where she and Bud were leaders of the youth group and was a mother to many of the church children in the late 70's and early 80's. Mrs. Shumaker was the daughter of the late Charlie and Onietta Lane Peters, and was a wonderful wife. Mrs. Shumaker is survived by her husband of 53 years, Thomas Brady "Bud" Shumaker; one sister, Pauline V. Peters of Bristol Tennessee; and cousins. The funeral service will be conducted at 8 p.m., Tuesday, Dec. 28, 2004, in the Akard Funeral Home Chapel with Leland Houser, minister, and Dwight Shaffer, minister, officiating. SOUDER, Dorothy N. Bryan  BLUFF CITY – Dorothy N. Bryan Souder, 83, formerly of 190 Holston Drive, died Thursday, Dec. 30, 2004, at NHC Healthcare of Johnson City, following a lengthy illness. A native of Bluff City, she was the daughter of the late J.B. and Jenny Myrtle Harkleroad Bryan. Mrs. Souder was a member of Bluff City Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Germany A. Souder, in 1997. Survivors include two sons, Kenneth Souder of Johnson City and Frederick Souder of Bluff City; two daughters, Patricia Souder and Rebecca Souder Taylor and her husband Steve of Bluff City; five grandchildren, Kristin Barnett, Keelie Watkins, Amber Taylor, Lauren Taylor and Daniel Taylor; and three great-grandchildren. The funeral service will be conducted at 7 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 1, 2005, at Bluff City Baptist Church with Rev. Joe Blankenship and Layman Sheldon Lewis officiating. WATSON, Josephine M. BRISTOL, Tenn. – Josephine M. Watson, age 71, of 42 23rd St., passed away Wednesday, Dec. 22, 2004, at her residence with her family. She was born Jan. 15, 1933, a daughter of Joseph and Nellie Mae Bolling, and a lifelong resident of the Bristol area. She was a dedicated wife, loving mother and maw-maw and a homemaker. WILKINSON, Luther Earl  BLUFF CITY – Luther Earl Wilkinson Sr., 83, passed away Friday evening, Dec. 24, 2004, at his home. He was born on May 6, 1921, in Pentacre, W.Va., a son of the late Robert Lee and America Elizabeth Jarrett Wilkinson. He was also preceded in death by a sister and seven brothers, He served in the U.S. Marine Corps for four years and was a member of the Church of God in Cedar Grove, W.Va. He retired from the Sullivan County School System in 1974, having taught 22 years at Bluff City High School, Mary Hughes High School and Sullivan East High School. Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Thelma Ethel Walls Wilkinson, whom he married on Dec. 24, 1947, in Bristol; five children, Luther Earl Wilkinson Jr. and his wife Linda of Glasgow, W.Va., Brenda Hutchings and her husband Geoff of Elizabethton, David Wilkinson and his wife Pansy of Piney Flats, Joe Wilkinson and his wife Debbie of Bluff City and Gary Wilkinson and his wife Debbie of Bristol Tennessee; nine grandchildren, Luther Earl Wilkinson III of Toledo, Ohio, Chris Wilkinson of Farmersburg, Ind., Gennie Edwards of Wichita, Kan., Gretchen Norton of Seymour, Tenn., Ginger Lewis of Elizabethton, Jessica and Melissa Wilkinson of Bluff City and Meisha and Greta Wilkinson of Bristol Tennessee; 11 great- grandchildren, Ashley, Hailey and Sydney Wilkinson, Eli Wilkinson, Wil and Gwenyth Edwards, Hannah, Ellie and Carter Norton and Hunter and Aaron Lewis; and several nieces and nephews.
