American History: Founding Principles
(Civics and Economics)

Course Description

Civics and Economics is a required social studies course for graduation.  This course provides students with an understanding of how economic and political systems operate, and the context through which they were created. Through the study of Civics and Economics, students will acquire the skills necessary to become responsible and effective citizens in an interdependent world.  At the end of the semester, students will take a final exam that will count 20% of their final grade.

As this is an Honors level course, students should expect a high level of rigor, including taking independent reading notes, and time spent in and out of class writing and participating in background research used to support in-class case studies and discussions.  Students without access to online and print resources at home will need to plan on utilizing the PCHS media center regularly before school, during SMART lunch, or afterschool.

Attendance and Make-up Work

In the event of an absence, each student is responsible for making up his or her work.  If you are absent, the day you return you are to turn in the work from the last day you were present. In the event of an absence, a student can make up work under the conditions listed in the Panther Creek High School Student/Parent Handbook.  

Each student is responsible for getting his or her missed assignments from the “Blackboard” (blackboard.wcpss.net) website via a school computer or home computer with Internet access or from a classmate.  

Late Work

Late homework will be accepted one day late and will be penalized one grade.  To make up homework more than one day late, the instructor reserves the right to assign an alternative assignment that may be completed for partial credit.  The alternative assignment must be completed and turned in by the day of the unit test.

One letter grade will be deducted for each day that a major assignment is late, up to a maximum of a 40 point deduction.

Hall Passes/Tardiness

Students are encouraged to take care of all personal business prior to coming to class.  Students are not allowed to leave the room without an official hall pass from an authorized staff member.  

Unexcused tardiness will be handled appropriately (warning, parent contact, lunch detention, etc.).  The tardy policy is outlined in the PCHS Student/Parent Handbook.

Unit and Chapter Correlations

Each Civics and Economics unit is compiled from a variety of sources.  Civics Today: Citizenship, Economics, & You is the assigned text for the course.  The chart below provides the chapter correlations for each of our units as well as the North Carolina Standard Course of Study goals and objectives. At lrast one reading quiz can be expected for each unit. Students should keep all class handouts and take lecture notes since our units go beyond what is addressed in the text.

Basic Expectations

In respect to the learning environment and the advancement of each day’s lesson, students are expected to meet the PCHS Basic Expectations:  

  1. Be present and on time.
  2. Be prepared for and engaged in learning.
  3. Be a person of character.
  4. Be safe and comply with PCHS and WCPSS policies.

If the basic expectations are not met, then certain consequences will follow.  

Success Strategies

For a successful completion of the course, students should:

  1.  Take notes from lectures and assigned readings.
  2.  Ask course-related questions.
  3.  Turn in assignments on time.
  4.  Discuss issues in a rational manner.
  5. Seek extra help when needed.  Students may attend tutorials during the stated SMART lunch times, and should make an effort to take initiative to obtain assistance any time they feel unsure regarding content matter, assessments, etc…
