OUTCOMES

(Lesson Focus)

What will the students know or be able to do at the end of the lesson?

ASSESSMENT

How will the students demonstrate that they have accomplished the desired outcome? Please state the question that will be asked during your formative assessment.

STRATEGIES

In what activities will the students be engaged to accomplish the desired outcome? Please list in the order that you will implement.

3 HOTS QUESTIONS

e.g. one should be on knowledge, one on application, and one on synthesis or evaluation.

PK.MD.2

Red, Blue, Yellow, Purple and Green Groups

Children will understand subtracting as a separating action.

Use the pictures to tell how many are left.

- Guided Practice: Use connecting cubes to demonstrate “fewer.”

- Introduce Vocabulary: fewer, take away, left, minus sign

- Guided Practice: Have children listen to number stories and explain the separating action.

- Independent Practice:  Complete Activity sheet

- What does it mean to “take away?”

- There are 3 bunnies in the carrot patch. One bunny hops away. How many bunnies are left?

- Create your own separating story.

PK.MD.2

Red, Blue, Yellow, Purple and Green Groups

Children will represent subtraction as a separating action.

Children will solve math stories and complete subtraction equations.

Tell your own separating story about the frogs on the log.

- Guided Practice: Introduce subtraction story “Hungry Shark” and review vocabulary terms.

- Whole Group: Smartboard activity on solving math stories and completing subtraction equations.

- Small Group: After listening to song “5 Green and Speckled Frogs” children will utilize their own pond habitats and frogs to demonstrate separating actions and write a subtraction equation.

- What does it mean to “subtract?”

- How can we use our fingers, objects or pictures to subtract numbers?

- Show how to write a subtraction equation to solve the problem.

Yellow, Purple and Green Groups

Children will subtract 1 from numbers through 9.

Children will complete subtraction equations.

How do you subtract 1?

- Whole Group: Review number order, especially numbers that come “just before.”

- Introduce Vocabulary: minus, subtract

- Guided Practice: Use volunteers to demonstrate subtraction using connecting cubes as trains.  Then write the subtraction equation on the board.

- Independent Practice: Complete Activity Sheet.

- What do we use a “minus sign” for?

- What is another word for “subtract”?

- Make up a separation story for one of the subtraction equations on the board.
