I believe that marketing is a crucial skill that everyone should know a little about regardless of their profession. It is a fundamental part of our economic system that is used to communicate with a customer the value of product or service.  For instance, in order to get a job in today's competitive world knowing how to market your knowledge and talents can give you an advantage over the competition. Without marketing our capitalist society would not be able to function properly.

I see myself fitting into this world of marketing in many different ways. For one, building this website as a blog of projects I have worked on is a way of advertising my accomplishments to an employer. In my career field, the process of building a website that is visually appealing is in itself a way of marketing one's skills. I plan on improving this website over time along with designing websites for student organizations as a way of further demonstrating my abilities. After successfully marketing my skills to an employer, my role in in this world as it relates to marketing will change. As someone that specializes in computers and the software that runs on them I could be asked to do any number of roles ranging from technical support to mobile application development.  I could have an indirect influence on marketing in a job such as repairing computers for a company's marketing department or I could have a direct influence performing tasks such as creating flash games that advertise new products.

Another path that I may decide to take further down the road is starting my own business as a software developer. Many programmers once they have sufficient experience try their hand at being an entrepreneur. This would require a more in depth approach to marketing with a complete marketing plan. I would probably start by advertising my services to small businesses to build and support custom software solutions. As my company grows to become a brand that is well known and respected I would begin marketing my companies own line of licensed software products.
