Soundtrack Project

Create a soundtrack that would be used with your novel if it were a movie.

  1. Identify the main events in the plot. There should be 10-15 such events. Write them down in a chart.
  2. Choose songs that would play as background songs during those events if the book were a movie. Write them down in the chart and include YouTube links to the songs if they are available on YouTube.
  3. Decide on one overall theme song of the book and include that in your chart.
  4. Explain why you chose each song. Write that in your chart.

Example:

Soundtrack for Eleanor & Park by Rainbow Rowell (first two songs)

Overall Theme Song

“Voices Carry” by Til’ Tuesday

I thought it was important to use an 80s song as the novel is set in the 80s. A lot of what happens in the novel is secretive, and this song includes the instructions to be quiet, so I thought it would be a good overall theme song: “Hush hush, keep it down now; voices carry.”

Park is on the bus listening to his walkman when Eleanor gets on.

“Watching the Detectives” by Elvis Costello

Park is pretty cool sitting on the bus on his own, observing everyone else as they watch everything like hawks. When Eleanor sits beside him, all these “detectives” are watching him.

Marks are awarded based on accuracy in identifying main events and adequate explanation of song choices/suitable choices.

The aim of this project is to show one’s understanding of the novel.
