I hope you received the letter I wrote from Abony,^[1] my little country nest, and I wonder whether the latest source of paternal pride has yet been born, but in any event, I hope your dear and honoured wife has come through this critical time successfully, and

please pass on to her my cordial regards.^[2] 

The main purpose of this letter, however, is to ask – if it is not too much trouble and bother – if you could send me, briefly, the historic letter which the Duke of Portland wrote to Van Dyck, either a Hungarian or German translation of it, or, if clearly copied in English, that would also be enough. It would make my friend Kozma’s^[3] task much easier

easier, because he very eagerly read the current letter and was fascinated by the section that he and I were able to read, but if a learned English friend is unable to make out the old handwriting, then we might be in trouble, and Kozma would approach some antiquarian specialists; but if my request can easily be complied with, then that

would be excellent.–

In about two weeks, I am expecting Kozma to publish a very clever article in the Sunday edition of “Az Ujság”, using both letters.^[4] 

Today I go to Vienna, where I will remain, at the Hotel Sacher, until the Delegation concludes its sessions on about the 16th of this month.

Falusi fészkemből Abonyból írt levelem, reménylem, kezeihez jutott, és nem tudom az apai boldogság új tanujele, látott e már nap-világot, minden esetre, lelkemből óhajtom, hogy tisztelt s kedves neje, ezen criticus momentumon is, szerencsésen keresztülessék, és

Soraim fő czélja különben, azon kérés –, ha sok fáradozás s baj nélkül, lehetne? nekem rövideden, a Portland Herczeg v. Dykhoz [sic] intézett régi levélnek, vagy fordítását magyar v. németül, vagy elég volna,– ha jó angol írással lemásolva elküldené, az Kozma barátom feladatát, igen könnyítené

könnyítené, mert ő lelkesedéssel olvasta, a mostani levelet; s el van ragadtatva, a régi levél, azon részéről melyet, ő s én is, el tudtuk olvasni, de ha egy tudos [sic] angol barátunk, a régi írást, nem tudja tökéletessen [sic],– elolvasni, akkor esetleg bajba vagyunk; és még kísérletettesz Kozma a Muzeumi tudosoknál [sic]; de ha könnyen kérésem teljesíthető az

Kozma bizonyára kb 2 hét múlva, „Az Ujság” vasárnapi számában, oly szellemdús czikket fog írni; a 2 levél autografiáját is felhasználni.

Én ma Wien-be megyek, hol a Delegatio végéig, kb e hó 16kéig „Sacher” vendéglőben maradok.
