The Federalists wanted a strong central government, believed the Constitution was constructed loosely, wanted a government that was run by the educated elite.  They also supported an economy based on trade and manufacturing.  It was led by Alexander Hamilton and John Adams

The Federalist Party tended to gain support from upper class, creditors, who owned the means of manufacturing and banking.  They were the  well educated elite faction of society. Most Federalist support came from the Northeastern states.

27-  Identify what the Democratic-Republicans supported and describe the characteristics of a typical Democratic-Republican.

The Democratic-Republicans feared a strong central government so they supported strong state governments.  They believed the government should be run by the common man and supported an agricultural based economy. Most Democratic-Republican support came from the southern and western states.

The Democratic-Republicans were supported by creditors, laborers, farmers, and the uneducated.  Most Democratic-Republican support came from the southern and western states.

30- Describe what occurred during the Whiskey Rebellion-

Western farmers, especially in Pennsylvania and Kentucky, rebelled by refusing to pay the tax, tar and feathering tax collectors, and  putting up liberty poles.  George Washington led in troops to collect the tax.  This is significant because it shows that the new government under the Constitution is strong enough to enforce its laws.

33- How did canals effect where railway lines and interstate highways developed?

Railways and highways developed parallel to the canals connecting cities that grew up as a result of the canals.  Examples I-90 runs parallel to the Erie Canal in New York state and I-77 runs parallel to the Ohio and Erie Canal in Ohio.

34- Explain how new inventions, such as canals and railway lines affected population distribution during the 19th century.

Canals allowed population to move away from natural waterways because people now had the ability to trade without using rivers and the ocean to ship goods.  Example- as a result of the Erie Canal people could now move into the land along the Great Lakes because they could ship their agricultural goods to Buffalo by lake then along the Erie Canal to New York City. They could also receive manufactured items using the same routes.  Prior to the canal, people living west of the Appalachian Mountains had to settle along the Ohio River and its tributaries in order to ship goods through the port of New Orleans.
