When to do this step:

After you have finished drilling holes and installing tee nuts for all of your formations

After you have textured and painted your passage

Required tools and supplies:

Refer to these pictures as you do the steps below:

Steps for formations with sensors:

Note: If you only have sensors for some of your sensor-compatible formations, follow these steps for as many formations as you have sensors. Then follow the “Steps for formations without sensors” for the rest of the formations.

Step 1: The person outside the passage places one sensor base into one of the previously drilled sets of holes (see Drilling Holes for Sensor-Compatible Stalactites and Stalagmites).  Make sure that you line up the LEDs with the LED holes and the buzzer with the buzzer hole.  There is only one correct way to place the sensor base.  Do not try to force the sensor base into the holes.

Step 2: Thread the two nylon thumbscrews into the two holes in the sensor base.  These holes are labeled and are diagonally across from one another.  Take care not to cross-thread the screws as the enter the tee nuts.  The screws need only be finger tight.

Step 3: The person in the passage inserts the threaded rod of a formation up through the 1” hole where the base has been placed.  This person continues to hold the formation.

Step 4: The person outside the passage puts several things on the threaded rod, in this order:

Step 5: The person outside tightens the nut finger-tight.  The person inside can then let go of the formation.

Step 6: The person outside the passage puts an additional ½” nut onto the threaded rod.  Spin the nut until it is about 1” down the rod.

Step 6: The person outside the passage puts a sensor on the threaded rod.  If you are placing a stalactite, the words on the sensor should be right-side up.  If you are placing a stalagmite, the words should be upside down.

Step 7: The person outside the passage puts a third ½” nut on the threaded rod.  The sensor should be between the top two nuts.  Tighten the nuts down finger-tight.

Step 8: Plug the sensor into the sensor base using the telephone-style cord.  Never plug either side into real telephone equipment or damage may result.

Step 9: Optional: If you have a CaveSim interface box, plug the Sensor ID Cable into the sensor.

Step 10: Congratulations, you are now ready to move on to Connecting sensors to power supply or interface box

Steps for formations without sensors:

Step 1: The person in the passage inserts the threaded rod of a formation up through one of the 1” holes drilled previously (see Drilling Holes for Sensor-Compatible Stalactites and Stalagmites).  Continue to hold the formation until all steps are complete

Step 2: The person outside the passage puts several things on the threaded rod, in this order:

Step 3: The person outside tightens the nut finger-tight.

Step 4: Test the formation by bumping it.  If it wiggles too easily, tighten the nut.  If it doesn’t move enough, loosen the nut.
