12. HYDE PARK PLACE,

W.

29th Feb,

Dear Mr de Laszlo,

To my consternation, this explanation letter of mine was returned this evening from the Post Office, and I am distressed to think how casual and rude you must have regarded me, in not answering

your letter and in coming to your studio this afternoon, unannounced. But you see, though the fault was mine in addressing my letter incorrectly, I did write at once in reply to yours and naturally was sure you would be expecting us at 5 oc.

At all events, I am very happy to have seen you again, seen your beautiful portraits and seen the medium to add to your list of enthusiastic admirers. Mrs Cross[1] and her daughter[2] were so interested and delighted to meet you and I am so glad you can paint the

girl’s portrait [possibly 1787]. She is a girl of fine and strong character and personality and I am very fond of her.

You will forgive my unconscious rudeness, and stupidity, won’t you?

Yours sincerely

Edith W. Carlisle.
