Heating Your Crabitat & Tank Dimensions/Weight.

By Emily C on Wednesday, July 8, 2015 at 4:38pm

Using dimensions from:

1) http://www.herpcenter.com/reptile-a…/aquarium-sizes-weights/

2) http://www.aquariumcarebasics.com/aquarium-dimensions/

3) http://www.fintastic.us/standard-aquarium-size-chart/

This file is to help you choose the best heater for any size tank you have. Not included are the bow front and hexagonal tanks (under construction). This particular section will outline the heater sizes from beanfarm.com ( http://beanfarm.com/index.php?cPath=1204_1206). They have 11 sizes: 11x11, 11x17, 11x23, 11x29, 11x35, 11x48, 11x6, 6x17, 6x23, 6x35, 6x48. As a rule, choose the size that has a length closest to your total tank length, and a height closest to half your tank height. A very slight overlay with the substrate (1-2") is okay. Also, note that if these are too warm in the summer and that is a concern for you, a standard light dimmer or thermostat made for under tank heaters can be purchased separately to help control how much heat is emitted.

**ZooMed, Zilla, and Flukers sizes coming soon!

Please note, information on heating can be found in our care guide:https://docs.google.com/document/d/1KyTVO8i3YQHMTk5uueayrKZRFTd8SO6rDVOzBsE5XaI/pub

Here is the excerpt from the guide:

  1. Basics: You need a heating source so the temperature is always least 78 degrees in your crabitat. You can use a UTH (under-the-tank heater) on the side of the tank or a heat lamp for this.
  2. More Details: Many crabs actually prefer even warmer temperatures, and it's a good idea to create different temperature gradients in the tank so the crabs can choose where they are most comfortable between 76 and 90 degrees. Keep in mind that the percentage for humidity levels needs to be equal to or higher than the temperature for the crabs' health. It's a good idea to replicate their natural conditions, by letting the  temperature drop several degrees at night.
  3. UTHs: For crabitats, UTHs must be mounted on side of the tank, NOT on the bottom. You want to heat the air, not the substrate. Place the UTH on the back or one of the side walls on the outside of the tank right above the substrate level. In order for the UTH to heat the air inside the tank it needs to be correctly insulated, otherwise much of the heat is just going to dissipate into the air outside the tank.  Aluminum foil or a sheet of styrofoam are both safe and effective insulation materials.  The sheet of aluminum foil, styrofoam or duct insulation ideally should be large enough to cover not just the UTH, but the whole wall where it’s placed.
  4. Heat Lamps: If you choose to use a heat bulb, it must be used in a dome fixture. Keep in mind, if you use a heat lamp, you must use aluminum foil to cover a mesh lid, at least on the area around the dome fixture due to the high risk of the heat melting any plastics. You cannot use a heat bulb with light 24/7, since they need a day/night cycle. If you choose to use a heat lamp for night, choose a ceramic bulb.

Bean Farm Ultratherm Under Tank Heaters and Reptile Basics Ultratherm Under Tank Heaters are both highly recommended at HCO. They are the most reliable brands of heaters we have found, and they both have great customer support. Unlike other brands found at the pet store, these do not have a stick on back, and they work evenly through both sides. They were made to be insulated so in order to get the best heat output, thick insulation is a must. There are different options for insulation such as foil, cardboard, styrofoam, duct insulation which is the most popular option, and car visors. Insulation works best completely covering the whole back and sides and having reflective material directly against the glass, meaning the foil side should always go first. We do have a basic tutorial in our photo album section using duct insulation (https://docs.google.com/document/d/1HgFgclrbj6lbmW3sATBc5W4Q_ID-l0rsqiQ4fArWs7U/pub). Duct insulation is made of thick foil material with bubble wrap in between. These insulation options are all designed to be able to insulate heat, and do not pose an additional fire hazard. Upon arrival, you may be confused which side goes against the tank. There is a little plastic piece where the mat connects to the hook, and on that piece, one side will be flat, and the other side will be slightly curved. While it doesn't really matter, for peace of mind you can put the flat side against the glass. There is also a copper side and a non copper side, but according to their representative, it is not important to placement. You can apply these to the outside back of your tank, above the substrate line (your substrate should be half your tank), and use any kind of tape to press it down - most use packing tape or foil insulating tape.

Notes: The substrate total amount is NOT exact as everybody uses slightly different amounts. It is JUST a BASIC guideline using the 5:1 ratio per 10 gallons if space. I also did not include amendments into the substrate weight, or the actual tank weight. Our substrate file is located as follows, and has its own chart for ratio and amounts:https://docs.google.com/document/d/1Zs8P8AE1SQ98idhnDXirLB9KIXXWjcG6cZyQyA48mvE/pub
