[Translation]

Budapest, Sept [1]933

Dear Friend,

Please excuse me for only now replying in person to your two letters. My son Elemér^[1] wrote to you in response to your first letter and the painting-bond, to which you referred in your second, has been impossible for me to send since I myself still have not had it back.

Since February last year (for a year and a half) I have been regularly plagued by headaches, a grievous symptom of arteriosclerosis. For months I could not even sign my name and I was completely unable to work. I dubbed myself a living wreck. In fact, letter-writing still doesn’t come easily.

The nice little initiative we started, to get back the Munkácsy paintings, was sadly put to sleep by the death of Jenő Rákosi.^[2] The art historian Dr Abosi, who is a great Munkácsy enthusiast and who, through the book he published on the great maestro, contributed several thousand pengő to the Munkácsy statue fund, went out to America at the time, with the aim of engaging Count Széchenyi’s help in the task of getting back the Munkácsy paintings – but nothing happened.

I thought, after that, that the whole initiative was dead and buried. The painting-bond which you so generously provided was taken off to America by Abosi and there it stayed.

It is only now, since getting your letter, that I realised that he still wants to make use of your bond. In fact he asked for my son Elemér’s help in this regard.

The whole thing surprised me greatly and I completely share your view that there is absolutely no point in it. The world economic crisis makes it not even worth thinking about.

When I got your letter, I entrusted Elemér with the task of requesting that the bond be returned. But Abosi is not in Budapest at present and he has promised to send it back by the end of September.

Once again, let me say how sorry I am that this has been so awkward for you.

Kedves Barátom!

Bocsáss meg, hogy két rendbeli leveledre még csak most válaszolok személyesen. Első leveledre Elemér fiam megírta felvilágosításait, a második leveledben kért festmény-bont pedig még máig nem kaptam vissza s úgy el sem küldhettem.

Engem múlt év február hava óta (másfél éve) jóformán szüntelenül főfájás gyötör, az érelmeszesedés súlyos tünete. Hónapokon át még a nevemet se tudtam aláírni s teljesen munkaképtelen voltam. Elneveztem magamat egy élő várromnak. Ezért esik nehezemre még most is a levélírás.

Sajnos, a Munkácsy-képek visszaszerzésére indult szép akciók Rákosi Jenő halálával elaludt. Dr Abosi műtörténész, aki Munkácsy-rajongó s a nagy mesterről ki adott könyvével több ezer pengőt juttatott a Munkácsy-szoboralap javára akkor még kiutazott Amerikába és ott Gf. Széchenyit akarta megnyerni a Munkácsy-képek visszaszerzéséhez, – de nem történt semmi.

Én azt hittem, hogy így az egész akciót eltemettük: Az általad nagylelkűen fölajánlott festmény-bont akkor Abosi Amerikába kivitte s az nála is maradt.

Most leveled útján értesültem csak arról, hogy ő még mindig értékesíteni akarta a Te bonodat. Sőt ehhez Elemér fiam segítségét is felkérte.

A dolog nagyon meglepett s tökéletesen osztom a véleményedet, hogy ennek ma már semmi értelme sincs. A gazdasági világ-krizis miatt erre gondolni sem lehet.

Soraid vétele után meg is bíztam Elemért, hogy a bont kérje vissza. De Abosi jelenleg nincs Budapesten s szeptember végére ígérte annak visszaküldését.

Ismétlem, nagyon sajnálom, hogy az ügy Téged kellemetlenül érintett.
