Solar Education in local schools

Objectives and description: 

  1. Using the class outline and kits developed for the Texas Solar Energy Society, teach elementary students about solar energy by building and demonstrating solar cars.  The classes are best suited for 4th and 5th grade science classes, and also gifted education 3rd grade classes.
  2. Offer solar presentations to local high school classes
  3. Resources for teaching solar

April & May 2014 - LH

Plano Solar Advocates & Live Green in Plano volunteers held solar car classes for 140+ students this spring. We held 12 sessions at 8 different elementary schools. Students, teachers, and volunteers all had a great time!

March 10, 2014 - LH, HOW TO ENROLL IN THE SOLAR CAR CLASSES FOR SPRING 2014

Beginning in March 2014, to help increase our outreach, we worked with the Live Green in Plano (LGIP) department to train additional volunteers for this spring.  We are also using the Live Green in Plano online registration system to help us better coordinate scheduling.

3. scroll down the page to find the "4th Grade" section and the "Solar Car Kit Demonstration" (for 4th grade, and 3rd and 4th grade Gifted Education/PACE classes)

Plano Solar Advocates had the opportunity again to teach a solar energy class for the Advanced Placement Environmental Science Classes at Plano Senior High School. We presented to 11 class sections, reaching approximately 260 students.  We had a great time interacting with the students which had some really great questions!

April-June, 2013 - LH

Plano Solar Advocates & Live Green in Plano volunteers held solar car classes for 215 students this spring. We held 14 sessions at 10 different elementary schools. Students, teachers, and volunteers all had a great time!

Plano Solar Advocates had the opportunity again to teach a solar energy class for the Advanced Placement Environmental Science Classes at Plano Senior High School. We presented to 10 class sections, reaching approximately 220 students.  We had a great time interacting with the students which had some really great questions!

Plano Solar Advocates had the opportunity to teach a solar energy class at Shepton High School for their Engineering Design Class of 25 students. We had some really good questions from these future engineers!
