‘Preparing each child for their future in an ever-changing world’

 Wednesday 4th January 2017

Dear Parents and Carers,

We hope you have had a wonderful Christmas break with your families and friends. Thank you for the lovely cards, messages and presents.

Your children are fantastic at leaving you by the door and coming in ready for the early morning task. We will continue this purposeful start to the day. If you have any messages please pass them to the adult by the outside door. If you need to see a teacher you may be asked to wait until there is a suitable time for the teacher to leave the classroom or you may be given an after school appointment. Thank you for your support with this.

The doors will be open from 8.35am until 8.45am. If your child arrives later than this - if the door is closed and there is no adult waiting to greet them - they need to enter via the school office and sign-in with the office staff.

The school day ends at 3.00pm and staff will bring children to the gate to be collected. Please ensure you inform us if your child will be collected by a different adult to usual as you will appreciate how important it is for us to get this right.

Children may bring in named water bottles (no squash or juice). A healthy snack of fruit or veg is provided at playtime. There is no need to send additional snacks as we will be encouraging children to try different things.

This term our topic is ‘Guess Who?’. Please see the attached Learning Web.

We have daily phonics lessons and hear your child read regularly. This will be in guided sessions, small groups and 1:1 (with a variety of adults). Please continue to hear your child read at home. Ten minutes each day is ideal. Reading should be recorded in the new diaries and we will check these weekly for messages as well. Your child will be given two reading books each week - please come and see us if you wish to change these more frequently.

We will be working really hard on handwriting this half term - the children know how to hold a pencil correctly and it would be great if you could check and encourage this at home. It may feel a little strange if they are not used to the tripod grip - try working with them to perfect the ‘drawbridge flip’ trick - click on this link to see a video demonstrating this. It is important for children to ensure their middle finger is under the pencil and not next to their index finger.

We will continue to send home a short maths activity on Fridays for the children to complete to get them used to organising their time at home in preparation for more formal homework further up the school. These activities are games or short puzzles designed to be approached with parental guidance and involvement - it’s usually a chance for you to play a game with your child and get involved with their learning. It would be helpful if you could ask them about their thinking during the activity e.g. ‘how did you work that out?’ ‘what do you need to do next?’ ‘how do you know that?’ in order to consolidate the learning taking place during the activity. Please comment on these activities in the home-school diary where appropriate to let us know how you get on.

We would also like you to continue to  log on to RM Unify where you can access Phonics Bug and RM Easimaths along with some other useful programs for educational skills practice. There are books allocated to your child on Phonics Bug which link to our phonics sessions and allow children to practise reading in a fun way. Please use the  journals to practise the spellings on the High Frequency Word page - these are compulsory words for KS1 children and your child will need to read and spell them.

P.E. is on Mondays and Wednesdays this term. In the colder weather children can wear tracksuit bottoms and a sweatshirt. Please ensure that children have spare socks for PE as girls cannot do it in tights.

Children need a warm waterproof coat and sturdy school shoes everyday as we often go outside. Hats and gloves will be needed in the cold.

As ever we really welcome and value your help. Please let us know if you are able to come in and work with us. Thank you to those who have already volunteered - it really does make a difference.

Thank you very much for your support.
