Teacher Spotlights:

At Galena Park Elementary, Mrs. Mattheu uses Google Classroom to engage her third-grade students and to maximize instruction time. She adds links so students can quickly and easily locate needed online resources. She also uses templates so that students have a baseline for certain activities. This makes it easier for students to “show what they know”.

At Shirley J. Williamson Elementary, Mr. Hill uses iPads to “techify” his science lab. Students access resources and practice activities with QR codes, then show what they know with graphic representations of science concepts such as the food chain, water cycle, or lifecycle of an organism.

Web 2.0 Tools

3x3 Links Table allows you to create a webpage with links you want your students to use. The site creates a unique URL that you can share with students, or you can set it as the homepage on your browser for easy access. This is a great idea for stations. Only having 9 links to choose from keeps kids from getting confused and/or distracted.

Appy Hour

ZipGrade turns your phone or tablet into an optical grading machine similar to a Scantron. It reads “free-to-download” answer sheets in multiple sizes. Provide instant feedback to students by grading exit tickets, quizzes, and formative assessments as soon as they finish.

Tech for Teachers

Sav Vid As a teacher, you often come across videos you’d like to use in class.  Sometimes, because of the district firewall settings,  you may not be able to view it on your district computer. In this case, it would be helpful if you could download the video, save it to Google Drive and access it later. Sav Vid allows you to download a copy in different formats just by copying and pasting the URL for the video.

Google Expeditions

Google Expeditions enable teachers to bring students on virtual trips. Expeditions are collections of linked virtual reality (VR) content and supporting materials that can be used alongside existing curriculum. These trips are collections of virtual reality panoramas, 360° panoramas, and 3D images. Oftentimes, the images are annotated with details, points of interest, and questions that make them easy to integrate into curriculum already used in schools. All you need is an iPhone and a Google Cardboard. There’s a good chance your school already has one just check with your campus TIS.
