Session 2: The impact of ICTs on the Information Society to Date (10:00-12:30)

  • What has been the overall impact of ICTs on economies and society over the ten years since WSIS?
  • What are today’s priorities for the information society, including further implementation of WSIS outcomes?
  • What contribution can the concept of “the information society” make to the post-2015 development agenda?

  • How should the proposed sustainable development goals (SDGs) and WSIS Action Lines be integrated?  
  • How can ICTs contribute to the monitoring, measurement and implementation of the SDGs?

Session 4: Innovations in ICTs and their implications for the proposed SDGs (15:45-17:15)

  • What impact will emerging trends in digital technology (datafication, big data, cloud computing, the Internet of things, and smart systems) and other new developments in ICT technology and markets have on sustainable development, in particular on achieving the objectives of the post-2015 agenda?
  • How can ICTs support the development of a global partnership for sustainable development with the active engagement of governments, civil society, the private sector and the United Nations system, as envisaged in the UNGA’s Open Working Group’s proposal for SDGs?
  • How can the role of the private sector be leveraged to strengthen development opportunities in this context?

Session 5:  Reducing the inequalities to universal and affordable access to ICTs  (9:30-11:00)

  • What policy interventions are required to ensure that digital divides in technology and human capacity do not widen, between and within countries, as technology and markets evolve?
  • Can improvements be made in multistakeholder collaboration and governance to address current barriers to bridging digital divides?
  • What can be done to make access to ICTs, and use of ICTs, more affordable?

  • What can be done to mitigate the negative environmental impacts of ICTs?
  • What can be done to enhance security and trust in ICTs?

Session 7: Maximising ICT potential through capacity building (14:30-16:00)

  • What are the limits of using ICTs for sustainable development, taking into account governments’ capacity to utilise them successfully, their accessibility to citizens and the infrastructure needed to support them?
  • What capabilities and incentives are needed to encourage people and organisations in developing countries, particularly LDCs, to make more and more effective use of ICTs for development?  What capacity-building is required amongst policy makers and development practitioners?
  • What policy measures can support the development of ICT entrepreneurship, innovation and production, particularly in developing countries?

  • What implications does the next phase of development of the Information Society have for sustainable development and the implementation of the Post-2015 Development Agenda?
  • How can we improve our ability to anticipate technological changes, measure their impacts, maximise their developmental value and minimise the risks they pose?
  • What steps can be taken to strengthen global partnership, including UN and other international agencies, governments, the private sector and other development actors, in support of these objectives?
