Dear Friend,

I received your kind letter dated the 9th of this month; and the award which His Highness has conferred on you is richly deserved, as a noted artist who has brought honour to our country’s name, and who, like a true patriot, has remained faithful to his homeland.^[1] Long life to you!

As you will remember, you discussed

discussed with my son^[2] the possibility of your going to Paris in the spring; and the idea that I too might pay the city a visit – for 8–10 days, so that you could paint my portrait [111091].

In April I will have a number of important meetings: the Delegation, of which I am a delegate member, will [meet] briefly in Vienna, for which reason I ask if it would trouble you greatly to send a few

lines to let me know your travel plans, and your thoughts – should it not be possible for me to get to Paris in April – as to where we might meet during the course of the summer? Is there no chance, perhaps, that you might pay a visit to your cara patria?^[3] –
