Prerequisites

  1. Shorten your strings! 70-80cm is recommended for beginners. Almost all top players are in the 65-90cm range. You should at minimum stay within that range until you are experienced. It may feel uncomfortable at first but will give you exponentially more control.
  2. Use a fully centering bearing! Stability and minimizing precession is much more important in 3a than 1a. I would even advise against center tracs. Any fully centering bearing such as concaves, grooved, DS, pixels, etc. should work great.
  3. Use a thick string! Since you will be using a much shorter string, you’ll want to use a thicker string for better response. Grippier response pads are also nice if accessible. I recommend OT Fat and Hollywood grey or black pads as a great budget option.
  4. If possible, use yoyos that are full sized (>55mm), fairly narrow (<46mm) and rim weighted. Avoid undersized, center-weighted yoyos if possible. Stability is more important in 3a than in any other style.
  5. Spend some time getting familiar with throwing with your left hand. Focus on trying to throw straight with good power and get familiar with the 1a basics such as trapeze, 1.5 mount, braintwister, and barrel rolls. Don’t get too caught up in it though. As a beginner-intermediate, your offhand doesn’t need to be very strong or comfortable at all and does not need to be your focus.
