Science Classroom Jobs: Available Positions

Class Manager | Take attendance daily, keep a log of students leaving the classroom, offer support to substitute teachers, help monitor the other jobs, and fill in job responsibilities as needed when other students are absent. This is the most responsible job in the classroom! Class managers must never be tardy (and should ideally be several minutes early) and are almost never absent. | 1 |
Lab Assistant | Set up supplies for activities and labs, help make sure that all supplies have been returned properly at the finish of a lab/activity. | 2 |
Class Greeter | Quietly welcome all visitors at the door and ask how you might help them, accept and deliver passes and other items from office TAs. Student must be willing to have a seat near the door. | 1 |
Phone Receptionist | Quietly and politely answer the phone when it rings, take messages or notify teacher, write passes as needed. Student must be willing to have a seat near the phone. | 1 |
Poster Secretary | Write on chart paper or board during class discussions, update Notebook Table Of Contents chart, update/maintain any lists on wall. This student needs to have neat handwriting. | 1 |
Audio-Visual Technician | Turn on/off TVs & VCR (first/last class of day); run VCR and DVD player; help substitute teachers with AV system (requires short training with teacher). | 1 |
Computer Technician | Turn on PCs (first class of day), assist other students with chromebook and PC questions and issues, verify that PCs have been shut down and put away properly (last class of day). These students must be comfortable using chromebooks and the classroom PCs. | 2 |
Paper Distributor | Distribute handouts, make sure that everyone receives one. Return graded assignments to students (this part of the job can be done whenever a student has completed his/her own work and there are papers to pass back). | 1 |
Master Collector | Collect papers from the row collectors, ensure that all get turned in an orderly manner. | 1 |
Chief Materials Officer | Check that all students have the materials they need each day (pencils, binder paper, notebooks, chromebooks, etc.) and help students get what they need. Distribute and monitor loaner pencils to make sure they are returned. Help Office Supply Sergeant distribute supplies as needed. | 1 |
Office Supplies Sargeant | Distribute tape, scissors, staplers, and other office supplies when required. Quietly and neatly collect office supplies when the class is finished with them. | 1 |
Clean-up Captain | Monitor how the classroom is being cleaned, verify that each group has cleaned up their station appropriately (stools pushed in, everything neat, etc.), report and attempt to resolve problems. These are the students that help us to leave on time! | 2 |
Classroom Handyperson | Do whatever is asked quickly and quietly, including running errands and filling in for absent students’ jobs as needed. | 1 |
Energy Technician | Turn the lights on and off as directed and control the thermostat. | 1 |
Evacuation Coordinator | Bring emergency backpack when we evacuate the classroom, lead the class to our evacuation site, make sure all are in line and accounted for. | 1 |
